Editing building requirements, Exe questions etc.

I searched all the txt files found in .lod , but it seems I can only adjust construction costs.

Is it just that some game aspects are in the .exe file?
Why did "NWC" not realease source code like "id" did with old Doom?
Would that not be beneficial for modding community?
Did HotA team managed to crack the code or reverse engineer it?
Why does HotA team not share their work so others can easily see the code and edit the game?

Yes its bad fact but we cant edit it easy. In Era too. I dont hear about it. HotA methods is a secret. And I dont hear someone find it...

Basically, the HotA team has created hooks that are inserted into the original code at runtime in memory. Through the hooks, they're able to alter stuff of the original game as well as add their own stuff on top of it.

And yes, a lot of stuff is hard-coded into the executable. It contains numerous data tables for instance.

Egoism and ,"expertism". We want admiration. We know and you not. We are better! Its fault and human must fight with it. Better way is doing complety opposite. Eg. when I found how to making h4def which is completly "impossible", at this moment I told it all:

Not I can, but HOW ALL CAN!
And some people do the same Nimo, Maurice, WoG team, VCMI team, df2 forum etc. And its good. You are better if you divide not to plaing expert. All should fight if he has thinks dont tell you are expert. Be good :-)

Yep, Berserker uploaded the source code for WoG, all of it. The question is: are you able to read it, as well as for Hota.

We had .exe editing tutorials at ZGOP website, but the side was taken down few years back. I still have some of the tutorials saved, but they are written in polish. Topics are: 'introduction to .exe modding', 'changing creatures abillities' and 'changing town screen buildings coordinates'. Interesting things I managed to do in the past was changing blacksmith's war machine in any faction, changing battle starting positions, changing creature banks guardians, some changes in spell mechanics (for example you can make teleport to be used on enemy creatures, so that u can tp hostile shooters to you, that was one of my favourite ;') ), You can also easily add 4 brand new creatures to game with sounds through hex-editing. There is also a lot of stuff, that is unknown to me, for example races and genders of heroes are saved in .exe file, but what are they for? I don't think it is being used anywhere in the game mechanics. Changing any of the above correctly never causes game to crash, unlike some of other people are claiming. It is nice way to customize Your own HoMM3, but for mods almost completely useless, since .exe modding doesn't cooperate with other mods, as someone already mentioned.

Gender is only for def graphics :-) We have 2 sprites man and woman and if 00 it gives male sprite and 01 woman thats all:-) "Races" I dont know, maybe something abandoned :-)
Give this tutorial! It cant be lost.  Its not the same like it?

I tested and simple translator is very good from polish to english but not reverese :-) Hardest language of the world :-) Translating will be fast. But for me in original of course! We can actualize it using last discoverys!

These were based on my tutorials, written and joined by fellow talented modder J. M. Sower. It was so long ago, that I forgot about it! Beyond that, there were so many lil things, that could be changed (as I explained), that I probably couldn't decide what to write about next There weren't many hex-editors back then, I remembered everything and didn't see the need for writing about it.

It was more like: one of my friends asked me 'can You do THIS?' and I was like 'I don't know, hold my beer', put zeroes on vast chunk of code and at the end of the day we made memes with bizarre things that turned out to be done, most likely not about what was asked in the first place. Too bad they have taken down imageshack's free users images, I would show You some really crazy things we had saved there

Yes decompiling code is a great adventure. I know it from my experience :-) Sower site helped me very much and a lot of people. We began new thread: How to edit HoTa. All news about code will be helpfull!

And surpirise! I found WoG source code! Cant download but someone maybe make mirror! Its important!
