Dawn of War 3 is dead

Can we just talk about how similar is the disaster of DoW 3 to the disaster of H7???

What the HELL is going on with developers and companies???

Video about the current situation that I found some hours ago and that gave me the idea for this new topic (it explains everything that has gone wrong, if you are not familiar with the situation): Dawn of War 3, A Post Mortem

So, for those of you who want the short explanation: after THQ broke, SEGA decides to make a third game; the first two where very different and SEGA promised to mix the best of them plus new aditions (super-walkers). Instead, they gave us a MOBA-wannabe. Why? Because they wanted to reach as many potential customers as possible (casuals). But they didn't sell anything. Because casuals don't want strategy games, strategy games take time and casuals never have time, so they don't buy strategy games. Result: dead franchise.

In other words, this looks too similar to H7: since the beginning there were complaints from the fans saying that they were going into the wrong direction, but guess what, they didn't listen.

WE TOLD YOU SO BUY YOU KNEW BETTER.

I'm telling you guys, we need to embrace anarcho-capitalism/agorism, so these people bite the dust as fast as possible, leaving space for actual artist to prosper.

A pity. Some series are not meant for changes like that and attracting casual gamer crowds is not always as easy as it sounds. Casual gamers come and go but if you lose your core fanbase, who's gonna support the series?

Gaming business has nothing in common with gaming. Them terms about money not about the games. The same music industry, movie indstry. All is money, money, money...

I disagree, since the best way of getting money is to make a good product.

I blame it on stupidity. Mostly. Now I don't want to enter into conspiracies about how our culture is being manipulated to destroy our moral.

The thing is, if you want money, you don't mak something like DoW 3.

There are no Tyranids. Or Necrons. Or Tau. How this game can ever be good?

I can see the parallels to Heroes. Seems that the devs wanted to appeal to a wider fanbase and ended up appealing to none? They cut out key features from the product? Fans reacted but they didn't pay attention? Was kinda hoping that this was limited only to Ubisoft, but I guess it's becoming a more common issue.

But game is art not a product. If you want sell and get max money you must have target. Target must be big. Casual players... If casual players - game cant be difficult. Simple click click. No depth. Old ideas, old mechanics. Max realistic 3d graphic. And big advertisement. It destroy small art companies eg. NWC. Jon havent many to promotion so he sold NWC to 3DO. And after few years 3DO was to small. Ubi buy resources. And now Ubi is to small.. Vivendi eat ubi. Darwinism. Big eat smaller. This is not a good environment to game art.

You guessed it. And yes, it's becaming a very common issue. Common enough to start to be worried. And it's not just videogames: movies, music, literature,... I bet you all have heard of the scandal wih the "new Ironman" in the Marvel comics (who was a female black teen), and how it didn't sell anything at all (because those who complain about diversity don't read comics, nor watch movies, nor play videogames,... etc).

@Baronus ---> I don't really get what you are trying to say, but if you are saying that it is wiser to casualize... well, at this point we have enough cases to afirm without almost any doubt that casualization kills this kind of products.

The first DoW wasn't succesfull because it aimed to the wider audience; but because it aimed to hardcore audience, to people who wanted a challenge.

If it appease to everyone, it appease to no one. Just like with: if everything is art, nothing is art; loyalty to everyone is loyalty to no one;... etc.

I don't know how many times they have to fail to realize that they are wrong.

I think that casualistaion is primitivisation. For core players theses games are not interesting. Looks the same and dont have own spirit like MM. Standard production.

Well I liked it pretty much. It was lesser to the first entry (I liked teh first entry mechanics more), but still was a good game. Plus Tyranids. They nailed it for me. The downside was that they didn't expand on the available factions. I also heard that other players praised it mostly...

There are a lot of people who love DoW 2, but they mostly didn't play the first one or played it after DoW 2. DoW 1 and DoW 2 are very different, and that basically splited the fan-base in two (how clever!). This is why DoW 3 was going to be very important, because it had to reunite the fan-base... Well, both sides agree on something now: everyone hates DoW 3.
