- It always is, for the first few times at least - Zayl said. His ghostly blade was still active.
- We should press on, following the trail of blood.- He said. Along the corridor, more murals showing the depictions of the war, now splashed with blood of the L'Taah were seen, as well as corpses of the lizard men, as well as wrecked sentries of the Fortress.
- This corridor should lead to the main reliquary chamber, where the lexicon his held - Zayl muttered, as sounds of an ongoing battle were heard in the distance - It seems that the lady luck favors us for now, the sentries prioritise the L'Taah for now. However, keep your arms at the ready.

- The L'Taah do bleed, as you've no doubtly seen whislt going up this corridor.- Zayl said.- So they can succumb to more wounds other than a head injury. Their soldiers however are just as ferocious and relentless as the sentries in some cases.

- Indeed - Zayl said, as the sounds of battle had ceased in the hall before them. In his left arm Zayl had been conjuring a spell of sorts, and once the door to the hall had opened, he had loosen it through the doorway. A barrage of arcane energy formed ice spikes as it flew inside the room. After the spell was loosened, Zayl and the rest followed in. Inside the hall along the walls and in the center of it, lied ornate pedestals, made from the same white marble as the walls of inside of the fortress, on them were several artefacts placed on a gilded indigo cloth, untouched by time. Inside the hall, lied destroyed sentries of the fortress, as well as corpses of the L'Taah troops, some of them injured heavily in one way or another. Zayl had apporached the middle pedestal, on which a small cube rested. As he picked it up, the runes engraved on it began to faintly glow. Zayl smiled. But he saw that some of the slain L'Taah had actually survived the skirmish with the fortresses's sentries. One of them, their supposed leader, was larger than the rest of the L'Taah lying there, and was only lightly injured, as he was still able to stand up and brandish his monstrous, cleaver like sword. upon seeing Zayl, he spoke something in his tongue, which sounded like angry hisses and growls of varying intonation. Zayl raised his own sword as the creature charged forward. Zayl dodged the incoming blow, and got ready to counter attack. As he threw his blow, Morn had managed to hit the L'Taah Liutenant in the back with one of his arrows. He hastily drew another arrow, and it too sank deep into the back of the L'Taah liutenant. Morn and the others were then forced into melee again, as some of the surviving lesser L'Taah had began engaging them. Although injured, these lizardmen did put up quite the fight, just as Zayl said they would.

Cassador raises his shield up. As the lizardmen charge and attack, Cassador uses his shield to bash few of them away, and immediately slices their necks with his sword. Other L'Taah stand back up and strike back. Cassador parries them and immediately counterattacks, killing or injuring the lizardmen.

To intimidate others, Cassador severs one of the injured ones' head. The L'Taah yells out a violent scream, and Cassador takes the head and throws it away. There was nothing but fury left for the knight, who dares the lizardmen to attack.

At this point there were few of the surviving L'Taah left. Aellis had been dueling one, and only by jabbing one of her hidden daggers into the throat of the beastman was she able to finish it off. The larger one, the supposed liutenant also fell to Zayl's ghost blade. Morn had successfully repelled his attackers as well.
Soon enough, the skirmish was over, and only some gargling L'Taah, the more heavily injured ones, were left showing any sign of life. Not willing to risk it, Morn picked up one of the halberds that the sentries carried, and walked around, delivering the coup de grace to the wounded L'Taah. The moans and groans of the lizardmen had ceased moments later.
Zayl was standing around by the center pedestal, and looking around.
- It seems The Fortress returns to it's dormant stage, and if supposedly it follows the pattern of the others I had visited, the sentries should lie idle and ignore us, even as we plunder it. But we do not advise to crack the heads of inactive sentries, as you will awaken them, and the far more powerful ones as well. We learned that the hard way. - He noticed a door leading somewhere. - We should take this door, supposedly, it should lead to the main throne hall of the Fortress, and to the main armory and treasury as well.

Cassador's rage left him. He calms down, and starts heavily breathing from the battle. It was quite odd, really, as it may have been too extremist to throw away the lizardman's head away. He shakes his head and continues on.

- "Rooms like the treasury are heavily guarded and trapped. At very least, they are locked and cannot be accessed without a key. Any idea where it could be?" - Cassador comments on the situation.

- The other one is right - Zayl sai, referring to Hassic. - Very few doors are locked in these fortresses. And most can be unlocked with a  switch. There are more complex ones, requiring you to push a certain combination of crystal buttons. The most elaborate seals however do require a special key, but luckily, we have it. - Zayl said as his blade vanished into a wisp of mist.
As the group entered the throne room, they were greeted by a majestic hall, lined with platinum decorations, as well as white marble and ornat drapes, made no doubt from the same cloth that donned the pedestals of the reliquary.
In the far end of the throneroom, which was oval in shape, stood a throne. It was just as ornate as the decorations in the hall. On it, a mummified corpse of an Old One woman sat, so well preserved that from a first glance, you could think that she was snoozing on the ornate chair. She wore a dress of black and gold, and on her head rested a platinum crown, encrusted with onyxes. yet upon closer inspection you could find a trace of blood on her dress, as well as broken arrow shaft in her chest.
Besides the throne, there were two doorways, both opened. Zayl decided to enter the one on his right first.
This chamber of the fortress was, or more likely what was left of an armory. Few things remained here - A dagger in an ornate sheath, a shoulder guard engraved with runes of the Old Ones, a pair of greaves, similar in all to the shoulder guard, but more likely to be a part of another set in it's entirety. there was also a shield and a helmet. These items were the ones most notable.
- Hmmm. It seems they withdrew from this fortress rather hastily. Most unusual indeed- Zayl said to himself.

- These shoulder guards seem to be about my size- Morn said when he examined them. - It's no question as who should get the shield - He also added, looking at Cassador. - This leaves out the other three items.
- I'll take the greaves. - Aellis said. She didn't really wanted anything, but she didn't want to break her cover either. Besides, that piece of armor seem to be made for someone of her stature.

- Get the rest, you can divide it later - Zayl said, as he lead the expedition to the treasury. The treasury, unlike the armory was stocked rather well, as there were boxes chock full of precious metal ingots, and gemstones for the most part. There were several pieces of jewelry as well, and one piece in particular caught the eye of Aellis. It was a ring, jet black in color, with a single small ruby embedded in it. Without thinking much, she grabbed the ring and put it on to see if it fits. It did fit, quite perfectly in fact. Then she tried to take it off. It wouldn't budge.
- What in the... - She began while trying to pry off the ring.
- It's of no use. - Zayl had said rather casually. - The ring will come off itself, eventually.
- How do you know that?
- I had fell victim to such a ring once or twice in my journeys. - Zayl said. On his hand Aellis saw a ring near identical to the one that she wore, only the stone itself was much larger, and was a sapphire instead of a ruby. - Only these black rings have such a bizzare behaviour of bonding with their wearers. The rest are safe to wear as much as you pleased - Zayl took off his hood and demonstraded this with an ornate golden circlet, shaped to resemble a wreath of leaves, and having a large diamond in the middle, putting on and taking off this piece several times.
Now the members expedition could take a better look to his face. Zayl appeared to be a handsome man once, but now, whatever changes he suffered made that a bit obscure, esspecially with his gray, cracked skin, and red irised eyes. They had a bit of a serpentine look to it overall. Zayl also had a mane of dense black hair, tied into a thick braid. On the end of it, was a black ring engraved with silver ornaments.
- It's a shame to leave all these ingots behind - Morn said as he stuffed his pouch with gemstones.
- The superstition of the locals will safeguard them if you wish to return later to claim it, so we  wouldn't worry about it. - Zayl said. - This fortress will recognise you as friendlies, and will allow to take the troves freely. But on the other hand, what good is this gold and platinum, if your wheat are withering?
- Good point. - Morn said. - Do the Old One's knew how to prevent such disasters?
- Perhaps. I've yet to fully understand their language, their runes are very complex. It's a pictographical language, which means each word has it's own rune, and this makes them very hard to decipher, as there may be countless variations of a single rune, meaning a plethora of different things. But now, You've helped us to aquire the last piece of the puzzle that we need. - Zayl said as he opened his bag and took out the cube he took from the reliquary. He mumbled an incantation, and the cube began to glow with a reddish light, with a wisp of energy rising from it and surging into Zayl's head. This had lasted of several minutes, before the energy from the cube was completely absorbed into Zayl. As the cube's light faded out completely, the cube itself crumbled, and fell to pieces.
- It has served it's purpose. - Zayl said. - It has gifted us the knowledge of the language of the Old Ones. It'll make things easer for us from now on. - Zayl said as he took out his black book. He opened one specific page. On it, the book itself seem to draw a map of Niveria, showing the location of each fortress on the continent, with each dot having a strange glyph near it. After the map was drawn, a text written in alien runed formed as well
- These are numbered. Just as we speculated. This one was the first to be build. - Zayl looked at the map closely.
- Ah yes, There's a pattern. If we're to follow the order, the next one is one of the isles you call Aleria. The next three in fact. But... What is this..? A city? Do any of you know this place?- Zayl showed the group the map, he pointed at the spot in what was now eastern Westerlands, right by the bay, near a confluence of two rivers.
- Aye, that's Leighbury, a mage city, which now stands ruined. After the famines started, people blamed the mages. So they killed most of 'em and put the city to the torch. What about it?
- The map I have says, that your mage city stands where once a city of the Old Ones once stood. This is the first we've ever encountered. In the majority of the worlds that I've been to, they only left behind these monolithical fortresses, and nothing else. It is, to say the least, intriguing.

- We do not know what the L'Taah are intending to complete here. Just like with the Old Ones, we've had encontered them once or twice in our journey. This Leighbury can wait. We shall depart to Aleria next. Grab as much of these gems and jewelry as you can carry, It'll serve as your payment. and it should fetch quite the price at your markets, for all it's worth. - Zayl said. - However, there's no guarantee that we won't see the L'Taah anymore. Their presence here is intriguing to say the least.
- We need to go to Kingstadd if we're to find a captain who's willing to take us to Aleria- Morn said. - Word is, strange dealings are happening in the isles in these past years. something about a war between the alerians and people who rose from the sea.
- Then we should be extra cautious then - Zayl said.

Once the group had stuffed their bags with plunder, they returned through where they came, passing the Reliquary chamber again. The chamber didn't had anything more of note, but Zayl stopped by one of the pedestals anyway. On it was a shard of metal, most likely from a blade. Zayl picked up the shard and placed it in his bag. He moved on to the next pedestal, where several amulets lied. He took them, and gave each member of the expedition one.
- If memory serves, these offer some protection from hostile magics. - He said as he put on the last one in his hands. - Let's make haste, We have to find a boat after all.

As the group had left the fortress, Aellis was deep in thought. the ring on her finger did felt weird. It was very cold to the touch. And  the ruby on it seem to be resonating some sort of light from it, very dim, and nearly unnoticeable.
- There's a fishing town nearby, and it's still inhabited - Morn said-  We could get someone to  ferry us over to Kingstadd, it would save us a lot of time, rather than getting back to Cragow.
- How do you know it is inhabited? - Aellis asked.
- That's where we get most of the fish supplied to Cragow -Morn replies. - Few folk still live there. The fishermen do keep some aggresive dogs, but it shouldn't be a problem, because you're with me.
