Useful Android Applications

My sis recently handed me her previous cellphone and I've started customizing. Do you know any useful applications? Anything from energy conservation, security, to-do notes/reminders, weather forecasts, application organizers/cleaners, puzzle/arcade time-wasters etc.

Some of my favourites are battery doctor, soundhound and cleanmaster but I'm open to better alternatives if you know any. As far as time-wasters go, in the past I've spent some time on temple run, jetpack joyride or bejeweled clones though lately I mostly keep notes of things I want to do or personal projects.

I use iOS but as far as I know, all of these have Android versions as well.

Shazam: Better than Soundhound, same sort of program but more accurate.

Dog Whistle: Freeware, very small size and fun to use on the street, watching stray dogs put their ears up.

Starwars Galaxy of Heroes: Turn based strategy, cool game but the grind is harsh sometimes.

Plants versus Zombies 2, Kingdom Rush (three games): Most fun tower defense games ever, perfect for the phone.

Secret Society: Game perfect for phone, you try to find hidden objects but the execution is much better than any similar game out there. Freeware but big in size (1.5 GB or something like that.)

Today in History: Nice app with optional notifications. Articles, wiki links and info such as who was born and who died on that day, battles, holidays, significant events etc.

Anti-mosquito: I'm not sure how effective this is, makes some sound in some frequency that cant be heard by humans and shoos away the mosquitos. It's really small in size and freeware, so you wont lose anything by downloading. Ayvalik is 10 meters away from Greece and if mosquitos are anything like in here, it's something useful to have.

8mm: Camera app with great effects imitating various films and lenses from 1920's, 1950's, 1960's, 1970's etc. You can even shoot silent movies with the "trrrrrrtrrrrrrtrrrr" sound effect in the background. Very fun to use when filming things that will have nostalgic value in the future.

I may add stuff but these are the first ones that pop up on my mind.

Dog Whistle hah Wonder if there is anything to mess with cats.

Today in history sounds interesting, I'm interested in applications with educational value or tips. I heard that Anti-mosquito doesn't work but I could give it a try.

@Artu: I was looking for an app that allows you to shoot videos in vintage style, thanks . There are numerous apps available for that purpose, some with better ratings than others (and with or without PRO features).

For security I use AVG AntiVirus, which comes in a free and PRO version too. I purchased the PRO one for it was like 7 euros for a whole year.

For user comfort I have two blue light filter apps, but my phone already has one built-in. These filters (slightly) change the color of your screen but you can adjust the intensity. Using your phone at night without a filter will likely lead to sleep deprivation.

For games, I have 2048 Puzzle and 2048 Puzzle Plus, as well as diep.io, a chess game, slither.io and Supaplex. Especially the latter one has nostalgic value, because originally it was a very difficult 1991 DOS computer game. The app contains all original levels including a large number of fan-made ones. The visual style and soundtrack can be set to original or modern if you like. Personally I prefer old visuals and sound effects in combination with a modern track.

For cleaning, you can use CCleaner, but depending on the version of Android it may not be entirely compatible. I have Android 7.0, and this app didn't work properly anymore. No problem, because like with the blue light filter, my phone already has this built-in cleaning tool.

For photo/video effects: there are apps that can turn your pictures into cartoons, with various effects and filters. Unfortunately they don't keep their original size (or I just found the wrong apps ) but they're fun nontheless. And there are a lot of ads, unless you go PRO.

You can always find some videos on Youtube titled "cat sounds that will drive your cat crazy" etc and play it under the blanket. Mine loses interest after 20-30 seconds though, they learn to distinguish between the artificial and the natural quite fast.

Btw, if you like runner stuff such as Jetpack Joyride or Temple Run, give a go to Sheep Happens.

^ haha made me laugh

If you're up for some nostalgia: I downloaded GBA advance LITE, free gameboy advance emulator, controls are quite crappy for action games on the Phone but perfect for very good TBS games (pokémon, advance wars, Final fantasy etc), and it doesn't require internet (way to many games do these days, and generally thats okay, but I use the subway as transport a lot and lose connection there...)

I also enjoy tiny games like Choice of the Dragon and 'the grand tournament'. It's basicly a story where you make decisions all the time.

and yeah, creature quest is fun ^^

I was going to predict this, too. (Well, hard to call it a prediction when he's this consistent.) But then it slipped my mind while thinking about what to suggest. Lol.

My latest favourites:

Todoist as a task reminder. Useful with the ridiculous amount of things I have to keep track of everyday.

I-bank pass, no need to wait on the bank queue anymore. It can pinpoint you to the closest national bank with the least waiting time, get you a pass remotely and even give you an estimate when it's your turn. How did we live without this?

Oasa telematics, simply fantastic. You can check every bus location, bus route or buses that pass through any given station with real time positions or arrival times, optimal routes and what not. It can also work as a gps if you decide to go on foot. Goddamn useful.

There was a similar application for uber which doesn't work anymore A crying shame since uber is faster and cheaper than getting a taxi.

Acrobat reader has remained consistently useful. I wish it would automatically adjust the text to save you scrolling time.

Oh yeah I don't know how is called but there is this app that allows you to track your phone from your home if it gets stolen, might require root though.

I also recommend CYANOGENMOD, more stable and faster than the 'vanilla' OS.

Also Titanium backup in case things go wrong.

SmartLauncher is an app I personally like a lot, nice organized and fast UI.

Also the good old NES and SNES emulators for good old games.
