I'm currently playing through Dawn of War Soulstorm and Dawn of War II Retribution again.  I forgot how much I like those series.

Yep, both games were great. Shame third instalment didn't live up to the expectations. I didn't try it myself, but a lot of negative opinions were enough for me to not try it.

I mentioned this on occasion but I recently enjoyed two games made on W40k liscense.

One is Mechanicus and you may like it cus it's a squad based game when you control . I've bought it dirt cheap at a sale. It's quite fun although it gets a bit repetitive and grindy towards the end. They could've added more variety. Plus although the game can be hard at the start, as soon as you build up your team you're doing enough damage to breeze through rest of it with easy. It's still food for thought though, as you need to think strategically to optimize each mission to get best results.

Other is Gladius and it's a traditional 4x like game with many of the factions from W40k (they recently added Aeldari). It's bare bones gameplay but it can be pretty tense and fun. It seems to take a lot of the fluff from Codexes so it is pretty accurate depiction of the universe, units and all are basically 1:1.

Both games are maybe not the top of the league but imo they are very solid, as opposed to popular theory that games on W40k license are snow. They also capture the atmosphere of it pretty well.

I have Gladius and have been smacked down pretty brutally by the AI.  It was a refreshing change of pace from the Civ series.

I have yet to pick up Mechanicus for the very dumb that Necrons are my favorite faction and they should have been the playable faction, beating down the tech priests.

Yep the AI is quite solid. I play on Medium and they were even able to push me into a corner when I defeated 2 AI's and the one left amounted a huge force in the mantime. Half of my forces were on the edge of the map. Also, the wildlife can be pretty tough if you're not careful, especially in teh early stages of the game (Kastelan Robots mainly)

But the battles can be very interesting. A lot of small variables like hero abilities, morale and unit unique abilities. The game has just the right amount of simplicity and depth.

Yeah, was the same way, but Tech Priest can be really badass also, especially if you equip them with a couple of auguments. They're practically robots themselves so it's like Terminator met Cyberpunk.

After reading their lore and seeing them in Mechanicus I became quite fond of them. Not many factions speak "grimdark" like they do.

So, OD, what do you think about the new Necron fluff, you know about the Silent King wanting to be a real boy again?

So hey the new DLC for Total War: Warhammer was announced today, finally. And good god is it looking nice. My body is ready. I will cleanse the world roots with the Sisters of Twilight, and bring about an end to all of the filth of the world that has begun to clog it up.

As opposed to last two dlc's, this one actually picked my interest. Some really cool units will be added it seems.

But Skaven? Didn't they get two dlc's already?

I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing, but W40k lore can be really multilayered, like an onion. A single event can have multiple layers etc and I only learn by chance how deep it goes. It might be done or purpose, that some facts are left out (a "handy" way of explaining it is that Imperium likes to cover up many things) or it's an aftereffect of GW doing poor job on keeping their lore coherent...

Let's take the First War of Armageddon for instance:
- long story short: in 41st Millenium a coalition of Space Wolves, Inquisition and Grey Knights stopped World Eaters invasion on the Armageddon system.
- Space Wolves Codex only mentions how Angron was stopped due to Grey Knights banishing him and loosing 90% of their forces in the ensuing fight
- Grey Knights codex mentions the same, but also that after the invasion Inquisition decided to purge the surviving population and mind-wipe/wipe-out Imperial Guards so that no risk of Chaos taint would be left. Space Wolves opposed this (not only becasue it was inhumane, but they also didn't like how Inqusition wanted to "thank" those who fought Angron), saved some people and Inquisition decided to "keep an eye" on them
Well... it turns out it was a "bit" more serious affair:
- what I have learned is that there was a big conflict called "Months of Shame" in which a lot of damage was done to both sides...

I mean wtf? This is serious as it was a literal civil war in the Imperium that costed those chapters dearly. And somehow no one talks about that
