True, Gee Dubz was always big in war gaming... but war gaming wasn't as big back in the day, and fantasy in particular was struggling more than their other properties. Which is probably why the glorious ship minis thing ended up getting squatted.

And lord, if they destroyed those minis? Those fools. Those unmitigated fools. They needed to have a throwback cycle for Dreadfleet in order to capitalize on the pirates DLC in TW:WH 2, but they didn't do that either!

Doing stupid things like this is a fine british staple of mental deficiency

Remember all those sniper rifles that got worldwide fame in Counter Strike? the Accuracy International ones that evolved into the AWP?
Majority of them are cut up and at the bottom of the North Sea.

The last Hadley Page Victor strategic bomber of the cold war era is about to end up in a junkyard.
One Falklands War era carriet was purposely rusted because the museum that wanted it couldn't build a dry dock then and there.

And the list goes on and on.

There was a ship for most of the major factions in Dreadfleet, and a few for the less known ones too! The Vampire Counts had a giant undead kraken, the skaven had a HORRIFIC giant water rat, Araby was actually relevant because one of the major captains was from there, Tomb Kings had a floating pyramid, Dwarves straight-up had an ironclad vessel, and you got Dragonships eventually! It also had a lot of smaller dromons to show the actual scale of the main vessels, and apparently a zeplin and some mini dragons.

... It had a lot of neat things. A lot of setting-specific sea monsters (like Myrwurms) too. It was actually pretty cool.

Grey Knight seem like my kind of guys...

- Only one in a milion recruit survives the gruesome trials to become one. Oh and the recruits themselves are already elite of the elite
- there's only 1000 of them at a time (plus their Servitor slaves ofc)
- eat Daemons for breakfest
- skullf*ck Deamons instead of being skullf*cked by them
- sit on some kind of imprisoned ancient being that would f*ck up the world if let loose
- hold the Terminus Decree which is probably something that would end 40k as we know it (one theory is that it would "reset" the Emperor himself as in "turn off" the Golden Throne and enable him to be reborn)
- have Precognitors who rip off Daemons names from the Warp to use against them
- use a litany that contains exactly 666 words
- practically no one knows about them. They have a silent badass agreements with Ordo Mallus and Technopriests of Mars

And ofc have badass armor and gear. They have the quickest ships (and best crews + astropaths) and are able to arive to a scene of Daemon incursion and clean up things before literally any other force in the galaxy even takes notice...

I'm not familiar with this term. Well he is a writer of the novels so I assume it means that he did something to them by writing half-as*ed books?

Btw I don't know if you guys like TBS sci-fi games or Adeptus Mechanicus, but Mechanicus Complete Collection is at a 70% discount this weekend on Steam. You can also play it for free during this time if you would like to first try it. I've been eying this game for some time and this was the perfect opportunity to try it. So I did and I didn't need long to confirm that this game is very much to my liking, so bought the package which contains an expansion and some fluff, plus the great OST from this game which is universally praised. I doubt it will be much cheaper in the coming Steam Sale, 70-80% off is the most you can get on these kind of bundles.

Matt Ward is the devil.

He's the guy who's assinine writing had birthed all the Ultrasmurf memes.

he wrote several codexes, and they were, for lack of a better term, utter dogpoo.

But I can't do a proper description.

Well isn't Ultramarines popular cus they are simply easiest to paint?

Sorry kip but the page you linked is a literal pain to read and I barely even went through the first few parts. Reads like one of those neckbeard tyrades that is not understandable to anyone who doesn't smoke the sh*t they do. So I assume the gist of it is that the guy wrote some fluff bits that are universally unlinked and made some unbalanced rules along the way? But it seems we're past that point, as he mainly worked on 7th editon?

Well, to tell you the truth I didn't find Draigo's story that bad. Guy seems to be an elite of an elite (so badass already) and he f*cks up Daemons on their home turf becasue he is cursed to wonder the Chaos Realms, and occasionaly jumps out of the Warp to help his brothers. I actually like the lore bit when he seemingly was seen in AoS as a "silver knight who fight Chaos". Kinda cool crossover and a hint to a fan theory that AoS is actually placed in a pocket dimension of 40k and is an Old Ones experimental ground.

One of the biggest problems wit 40k is indeed the lack of synchronization between the rich lore and the diarrhea of ridiculously overpowered (as wearing impenetrable plot armour at least) characters, entities, organizations and whatnot, which at the same time are actually shown to be incredibly stupid from the average person's perspective. You basically have nameless and faceless cannon-fodder which is supposed to die in the billions because of someone's lack of understanding of basic tactics and you also have godlike characters who are barely any smarter but can punch through anything just because and ultimately win the day though the power of awesomeness alone (not talking only about the Space Marines). That becomes old pretty fast and creates the feeling that the whole universe is just a massive bar brawl between drunken Hulks while it could be much, MUCH more.

Haha, isn't it supposed to be so?

But yeah, I know what you mean. Imo there is simply no chance this will ever be organized neatly. The story spans 30 years of adding stuff, new writers, books, sidestories, sidecharacters etc. There are hundreds of characters which have their own books, some human, some inhuman, taking part in some "big story events", which take no more then 1 or 2 sentences in the codexes. There are some big conflicts that are mentioned multiple times (Armageddon, Death Guard attack on Ultramar etc), but most feel like some random "Planet X was conquered by Daemon Y, and Chapter Z was send to fight them". But you know what? We can't forget that W40k lore is first and foremost a tool for players to add fluff to the games their playing. Don't get me wrong, I know W40k lore has become an entity of its own, and some players, like me, enjoy it whithout even playing the game... but its main role is to instruct players: "hey, there is this big a*s conflict spanning milions of planets and at least a dozen factions, each more brutal then other, so feel free to draw inspirations from it". It is supposed to give you a feeling there is this big pot you can take spoonfulls of inspiration from. And some characters being totally OP? Yeah it sometimes feels ridiciolous and contradicting. But with a conflict so grand we need this "demigod" like characters, becasue how can you explain someone surviving a barf that melts your armor to the bones, psychic screams that take your sanity in a matter of seconds, or invasions of space monsters that eat a system in a span of few days. Characters dying in millions because of some stupid decisions? Well, W40k setting is a totalitarian regime taken to the extreme It supposed to be over-the-top or many times simply unrealistic... it is meant to show a hard-to-comprehend scale of a space conflict. And, where it's needed, it is a buttload of fluff you can expand (for moneyz ofc) via a book or miniature custom set/paint.

I think it's done really good in AoS. We have lore, we have big conflicts, but it is all set up in such a way that players have a lot of space to use their imagination. I can't exactly put it in few simple sentences, but after reading through the AoS core rules I can tell that they really put some thought into it: they give players a lot of leeway to customize their own battlegrounds. It is all neatly written: here is some fluff, here are some realm-specific mechanics, here are some terrain types, here are armies organized in this and this way, but you can actually do what you want (open style game has no limit of units whatsoever) and create a battle setting that is either inspired by ongoing events, or a totally random skirmish/campaign that you homebrewed, becasue the setting is so vast. In short there are some general things to consider, but rest is open to imagination.

Hope I don't sound like a fanboy, I also see GW shortcomings, but it's just one way to look on the bigger picture...

Yep, Sylvaneth or Wood Elves are pretty nice, especially the treefolk with their badass boss Durthu (who's at the same time the most reasonable leader from the entire faction). Their lore is quite interesting (the W Fantasy one, AoS is all about the tantrums of their demi-god queen and Nurgle's horseplay).

It kinda got boring in GW recently, I wonder when things will start to be interesting again. Some Warhammer Fantasy news would be nice.
