Dogs would eat you as well and faster, there are plenty of reports out there. Your scent changes after death, and meat is meat for any stupid dog. Animals have no clue what death means.

Well, once you are beyond recognition, they would of course. But not any faster if you are the one they are loyal to. Dogs actually moan the dead by standing by them and howling for hours, sometimes days. They can feel depressed because of what happens to you. Here's an incident replying to a question of who would reach for the fork first:

This answer is based on what I personally witnessed one morning on the news, it is a true story. The cat would eat you first, without even waiting for you to die. This happened a little over 10 years ago. It was in 2004 or 2005. An elderly lady had fallen and broken her hip while at home. This was somewhere in or around Los Angeles. I don't remember the exact location but I do remember that the news clip showed several different local LA news teams clambouring to get the story. The clip I was watching showed the woman, still alive, being wheeled on a stretcher to an awaiting ambulance. She was covered from head to toe with a sheet, like what they normally do with a dead body. The reporter said this was done because of the cameras being there and the gruesome nature of her injuries. The lady owned a dog and over a dozen cats. After she broke her hip she was helpless and couldn't move. The poor lady laid there for close to a week before a neighbor came to check on her. In that time her pets ran out of food. The cats started to feast on her. The Dog did its best to protect her but was also overwhelmed by the attacking cats as they started to eat at the dog as well. In a follow up story on the news, it was stated that she and the dog both survived the ordeal, and she got rid of the cats. This all happened in the days before I had a computer. So I couldn't follow up on the story. That last news follow up was the last time I heard anything about it. I think that answers your question and at the same time obliterates any question a person may have concerning a dogs unwavering loyalty.

There are individual stories about exceptional cats as well, but news papers constantly report dogs, cats, any carnivorous have same behaviors after death. One of my cats also knows exactly what mood I am in, without me saying one word. He will become stressed in a second if he feels human storm is coming. The difference is that for a cat-human relationship you have to work and put creativity. For a dog, all you have to do is give food then he will follow you everywhere.

I would say loyalty is precious when you earn it -like anything else, that's why while I love a lot dogs, I was never interested in owning one, they are too much of a toy-pet.

Dogs are pack animals unlike cats, so their loyalty is hardcoded. You can use that to toy with them but that doesnt make them toy animals. They are closer friends. Cats on the other hand are poetic, they are like a femme fatale, they behave like they are entitled to whatever you give them. Both have cons and pros when you live with them.

i've seen proof otherwise, across the upper animal spectrum. i've seen plenty of wild animals mourn their dead. i've even seen wild animals mourn dead animals that aren't even their offspring, let alone their own species. i think animal's personalities and understandings of their surroundings are much like our own; varied and deeper than a lot of people suspect. regarding mammals, anyway. i think all mammals have emotions; and because they show emotion, and have been shown to dream, i suspect their brains are a lot like ours. which means, they might understand a whole hell of a lot more than people think.

I didn't say otherwise. But death, beside the biological process, is a spiritual concept which, along with the afterlife concept are both shrouded in deep mystery, cloaked in darkness and generally surrounded by fear and apprehension. The very idea of death strikes fear into many people’s hearts. Thus the body remains are still part of this mystery and ethically -and in some parts of the world, legally- we consider them not a person anymore but also not a "thing" neither. There are many other perspectives which tend to sacralize a dead body, like the belonging to a family, the social rank, the individual historical impact and so on, and all those things are created by our consciousness, which as far as I know isn't a capability shared by any other mammal.
Also you are right, there are mammals which seem to understand the biological aspect of death and will even suggest they mourn and respect the dead bodies of their own, but usually those are not carnivorous, so I don't think there is an hierarchy but a simple functional divergence.

Of course, some animals are capable of emotions, loyalty and sensitivity. If they weren't, humans would not choose on a such large scale to share their stormy journey with them.
