Unused Abilities

I just realized that apart from fright aura there is also frightful presence that works like a pre-emptive fear for attackers I don't remember ever seeing it in the game, was it used anywhere or has it been collecting dust along with crystal scales, avenging flame and frost breath? Looks seriously broken but I love the idea

Crystal scales also puzzles me. The effect is situational to be sure but I am positive that it was never officially used. How come, is there any bug associated with it?

Also, what's the difference between elves double shot and normal double shot?

Elvin those skills are not used indeed.
frightful presence - works like  fear in heroes 3.

Crystal scales - makes the creature immune to direct stack number reduction abilities - Harm Touch, Vorpal Sword, Deadeye Shot etc. but it does not protect against ice spells with "Cold death" perk.
Actually this is something I am going to use for the boss creatures.

For the shots I think there is no difference besides the name.

It's actually even better because it only triggers when you attempt to attack the 'frightful' creature I noticed that it also makes that unit play first regardless of its initiative. Sounds perfect for boss units, particularly dragons.

Is there any way to add abilities to warmachines?

I don't think frost breath did anything more than adding a ability text description to the unit, like fire breath, 3 / 6 headed attack or whirlwind attack.
most of the area attacks were done by defining in the creature stats file (I think) which tiles would be affected by the attack (as well as the percentage of damage on secondary targets) relative to the unit position.
you could just code that the unit would damage its target and anyone behind it, without giving it the firebreath ability, and I think it still worked.
I guess you could also select all tiles in a 2 tiles radius around the unit, give a meteor shower animation (more like effect, if I remember right), give frost breath ability and rename it meteor strike for example.

I thought crystal scales felt like a logical ability for the reapers units from necropolis, with a modified name of course.
