Level Up

After capturing and exterminating 60+ jellyfish in one day, the jellyfish has been added to my favoured enemy list.

Mostly this type. Wtf there were many of those.

Yesterday I could spot one every 2-3 meters or so.

Today I decided I'd clean the sea since there was no chance I would enjoy a carefree swim with those things all over the place. A lot less than yesterday but still, 60+ in 3 hours. What the hell!

Well, they are basically plankton, they go along with the water current, so if there's a strong current towards the shore, they just accumulate.

Seems they are a pretty common type. Neraus should have those in Sicily too.

I have two jellyfish in my aquarium, except it is a freshwater aquarium and the jellyfish are synthetic decorations that are attached to twine and suctioned to the floor. Theyre still special on the inside. My jackass beta fish likes to swim inside of the dome and then it takes him a while to figure out he needs to swim down to get out. ****ing moron.

Jellyfish have a higher survival rate in damaged ecosystems. They've become pretty epidemic in the Asian and Yellow Sea. The summer time is particularly problematic. Algae blooms are vastly exacerbated by fertilizers that run off into the coastal waters, which then sink and are decomposed in mass quantities by bacteria. The consumption process draws and converts oxygen from the surrounding waters, making marine life difficult to impossible to sustain. There is currently a long stretch of dead zone in the coastal Gulf of Mexico due to fertilizer run off. There is a little bit of stupid stuff that can live there, but schools of fish that can be harvested for food are either driven out to open ocean or die (my mentally challenged beta fish would be in the later category). The eggs of course would not survive either in the deoxyegenated environment..

Others I've spotted in the meantime.

Don't think they sting.

This or something close to it.

Stings. I am happy that they have short tentacles but those basterds are too transparent to notice most of the time.

Those used to scare me as a kid. I soon learnt that they are harmless but the sight of them intimidated me anyway. Misunderstood fellows.

And these guys? I knew they are harmless but they are not even jellyfish. Go figure.

When I was a kid we used to go to the beach in S. Caronlina, and during the mating season there were hundreds of moon jellies washed up on the shore. They used to wig me out.

Occasionally we'd come across a dead man of war, which were quite beautiful even if it meant there was no way I'd be going in the water the rest of the trip. Meh, I generally hate the atlantic ocean because you had no idea what was swimming around you.

I do admit, though, that at the aquarium the jelly exhibit is quite entrancing to watch.

This is why I prefer New Jersey (of all places) over the Carolinas for the beach. The closer you get to the equator, the more ****ed up the marine life gets.

I have three different relatives buying property in North Carolina. Two in Raleigh and one in the Outer Banks.

@kip

Catapult sounds good.. They make swimming feel like navigating a minefield

@bliz

All those have been found near the beach. Found the first two plus the purple ones this weekend, the next one some years back at a different beach closer to Athens and the last two are regular around grandma's place. Until last year, northern Peloponnese only had the last two - at least in the areas I know. This year they just appeared en masse and they have screwed up our tourism. Did I tell you that they released dolphins in the waters to weaken their population?

@cor

Oh they beautiful to behold, I would happily go watch them at an aquarium. I really wish they would not interfere with my holidays though. I just cannot relax with them around, they don't stay on the surface where you can see them. The other day I was watching the seabed through those clear, beautiful waters and I happened to spot a single purple jellyfish chilling down there. It randomly decided to come to the surface and crossed 3-4 waters in a matter of seconds!
