tavern rpg

because i shy away from getting serious into an hc rpg, i thought we'd have a light one here in the tavern. no backstory, no explanations, just jump right in. better if you don't even plan anything, but only have a sentence or a couple words to go off of.

the only rule for this rpg, is that there are no rules. just try not to be a jerk by killing others, and make it fun. also, if you absolutely HAVE to start cutting off each-others limbs, we're all going to end this story as cyborgs. so you can't do that, because i already anticipated that endgame, so following that arc will be lame.

anyway, on to it:

======================================

fred the black was sitting in the tavern, chewing idly on a half-burnt, half-raw unicorn leg. he sat gazing around the late night gloom of the 24-hour tavern; picking out other patrons here and there through the varyingly dense pipe smoke. his ears picked up drunken snoring in a corner, some muffled laughter, and someone playing the knife game without any real zeal. the smells were what would be expected at this late hour: stale and fresh pipe smoke, vomit, ale, gooseberry wine, and body odor. it had been raining for 2 days straight, and the mood of the tavern had gone from mostly merry to hilariously hostile.

fred the black looked down at his table, and saw that blood was still splattered there; the barmaid in this joint wasn't good for anything but taking the willing upstairs for an undoubtedly regretful romp. the spilled blood wasn't unicorn blood, but the blood of some fool who had tested his patience. the drunkard had left injured and dejected hours ago; the blood was now maroon. fred didn't expect him back; at least, not without his lame-duck friends.

he rested his hand on the great axe "mr. kink", lazily letting his fingers drift along it's scarred length. he sighed, and then went back to taking more bites of unicorn.

Suddenly, the door slammed open. A silhoutte stood in the door opening, its frame highlighted when lightning lit up the sky, followed by a thunder that rolled into the tavern from the opened door. Rain was gushing down in the street beyond him, water falling off him where he stood. He wasn't alone, several others were with him. The tavern fell silent.

Waiting a few seconds more, the character in the door opening took in the scenery, the dubious characters making up most of the setting. Finally, he paced towards the bar, the people behind him flooding in from the streets. Water splashed from their hooded rain coats onto the floor, as metal boots clanked on the wooden boards below.

Finally, Maurice threw back the hood of his raincoat and slammed a hand flat onto the top of the bar.
"Ale and fast! Before I lose my temper!"
As he waited for it, he glanced - or better, glared - around the room.
"What's up with you guys? Aren't you enjoying yourself?"

Who the other, still hooded, people were that came in with him, was yet unclear. Perhaps if they put down their hoods, too ...

fred watched the hooded figures from his dark corner; in particular, the recently unhooded one. that one apparently was under the delusion that he could ever be in charge of a place that exhibited multiple personality disorder on a nearly constant basis; this tavern could be as comfy as the dreaded "comfy chair" one second, and in the next it could be feeding you your own innards. although the spanish inquisition that nobody expects was long gone, their frighteningly cartoonish personality had remained here and there throughout the tavern in the short period of time that they had ever revealed themselves. these hooded figures had better stay on their toes, because this place could be pretty dangerous when it wanted to be. like the ninja in the rafters, completely unseen above the unhooded one's head. who knows how long the ninja had been there, but as he was currently under the influence of bath salts and meth, he was apt to be pretty dangerous; if not unpredictable.

aunt morelda, the barkeep previously employed at the Feathered Tavern(until it burned down in the great duck wars of '14), came plunking down the steps from her latest 2nd-floor frivolity, and took her place at the bar. she eyed the unhooded one with a look on her haggard face displaying a mixture of hooded hostility and amusement. since the barkeep's head duck had led the charge in the great battle that ultimately felled the Feathered Tavern, her hair had been cleaned(somewhat), and pulled back into a duck-spoor-free bun with an ice pick disguised as an oversized hair pin; one of her secret weapons. the other of course, being what lie between her legs.

"if you want a drink, you're going to have to show me the color of your coin, stranger", she said, addressing the unhooded one.

While the patrons of tavern eyed the new group suspiciously, there was one man who haven't even glanced in their direction. Nothing was new to him and nothing surprised him at this point. Once he was one of the great Wastelands Lords, but today he was just a relic of old, all but forgotten. Grumpy Geny pulled closer his tattered cloak, that might have been blue once, took a sip from his glass and mumbled something about the guards having more style in his days. It isn't clear what he said exactly, because nobody paid attention to him for a long while now.

The now unhooded figure at the bar reached beneath his cloak and only briefly did this motion reveal the polished blade at his side. Light from few the oil lamps flickered in the shining metal for a fraction of a second. Then he pulled his hand back and placed a single coin on the bar in front of him.

Holding it there for a few tense moments, he finally pushed it across the bar to Aunt Morelda.

"I guess this will be enough, darling?" he said, trying a wink in the process but failing at it, as he leaned forward.

He looked around the room again. Although he did it fast, he managed to reassert the situation, taking in all the patrons present there again. His eyes rested on the hooded figure in the dark corner, who had tried to remain inconspicuous until now.

"... and if not," he continued, turning back to the barmaid and pushing himself back up from the bar, "then I am sure this will do."

With his other hand, he pulled a purse from under his cloak and let it slam onto the bar. The rattle of metal on metal was clearly audible, as the pouch opened and coins spilled across the bar.

"A round for everyone! We have something to celebrate!" Maurice said, now cheerfully. He turned around and pulled one of the other hooded figures close. "My friend Galaad here has taken up the sword and earned his title! I figured what better way to introduce him to this wretched hive filled with scum and villainy than to celebrate it here!"

All that gold.  Easy come easy go for him, drinking in the spoils of others' blood.  There had to be a way out of this...

"Another youngling got his hands on a sword. There are no real men left in the Honor Guard. That's probably why most of the women left their ranks. Back in the day things were different, now there's no one in those hoods worth a second glance, wait is that?.. Dang it, I'm getting too nostalgic again. For a moment there, I thought I saw Kooka with the rest of the Squad."

fred the black eyed maurice with renewed interest. fred himself had no desire for gold(since he had plenty of silver doubloons), but most here would punt babies into grain mills for it. which meant, a tavern wager was to be made.

fred nodded to the tavern's risen piano player, and the skeleton came over and leaned down. fred whispered into it's skull, handing the risen piano player a piece of silver, and the skull nodded. the skeleton fetched a rough leather purse from under it's bar stool, and when the patrons saw that, they started all nodding at the skeleton. dutifully the piano player made it's rounds in the tavern, collecting coins(and some ears), to anyone game enough to gamble.

the wager was on. fred didn't expect maurice to last an hour, let alone a day; as was the usual with this sort of thing.

maurice, being a non-regular, didn't notice that a tavern wager had been made on his life.

the ninja above him in the rafters was positively fidgeting with excitement; if anyone were to notice it, it would resemble a tarantula doing it's mating dance. not surprisingly, it still hadn't been seen by anyone; because of the layer of pipe smoke just below the rafters. it withdrew a tanto-bladed dagger silently, and poised for attack. ninjas could care less about petty wagers; all it wanted was the sack of gold. THAT much gold could buy it meth for a solid year.

He ignores pretty much everyone around him, except for the skeleton to whom he gave a quick glance, it reminded him of his old friend Sandro somehow. "Bah, what are the odds" he thought to himself, then rushes to order drinks.

"I know, my friend," Maurice said, as he gave Galaad a pat on the back, "but for now, we're here to celebrate. Enjoy, this one's for you!"

With that, Maurice pulled out a blunderbuss and aimed it upwards, while looking at the crowd.

"Time to party!" Maurice yelled, as he pulled the trigger on the blunderbuss.

With a loud bang, the blunderbuss unloaded its contents. Apparently, it was magically modified, spraying fireworks all over the place. Fire rockets exploded near the ceiling, crawling along the wooden beams towards various spots further ahead, while fountains erupted in all directions from the barrel blunderbuss, coloring the room in a myriad of different shades and hues. As fire rockets exploded, more rockets were launched from the blunderbuss, still aimed upwards.

Some of the hooded figures threw back their hoods and were revealed to be a music band. As they pulled out their flutes, brass horns and drums, they started to dance while playing festive and up-beat music.

She hastily wiped the donut glaze from her mouth and quickly wrapped her cloak around her, propping herself up in a feigned attempt at innocence. At the sight of the musicians unveiling she sighed. Maurice may have had a baritone booming voice but Corribus would have ratted her out like a hound.

Relieved she opens a satchel and gives it a small wiff. Still, relatively, fresh! Grinning she slips away from her table and heads toward the backrooms to indulge from her ill obtained sweets once more.

There was a lot of noise coming from the tavern. The stranger immediately assumed it was just another brawl, either over food, a woman, land or money. But as music started playing, he realized there was a party going on. How positively refreshing, he thought to himself. Though...was he in any position to judge? He deliberately didn't visit taverns all that often, especially in the West. For his...kind, exotic and mysterious as they were, did not always meet with kind responses in these parts of the realm. And the more drunk or riled up his hosts were, the more likely they would...'do something'.

The stranger wore an odd-looking, though comfortable combination of silken robe and armor plating, and his head was covered by a crimson-red hood with gold lining and hieroglyphs only he could read. His brown, bead-like eyes seemed to glow softly whenever he glanced around. Despite his best efforts...well, to a certain extent, he could never fully hide his avian physique: unable to fit his talons in any normal kind of footwear he always walked barefoot, and his hands...or claws, depending on how one looked at it, were also not obscured by gloves. Going through that trouble would be null and void anyway, for once he would take off his hood it would already be quite clear who, and what he was. Falcon-born, one of many subspecies of avian humanoids. And that was usually when the comments started. His lack of wings, a feature his kind was mocked for the most, would probably be the first topic of conversation.

In his right hand, he held an ornate staff with a crystal rose on top. Where he came from, a realm beyond the lands beyond the sea, these...dynasty weapons as they were called, could only be wielded by beings of extraordinary strength. As he stood there, he wondered how he would introduce himself. His real name would be too difficult to comprehend for the Western folk, so perhaps his customary approach could work here too. "Horace", he repeats out loud. Although his youth was anything but fun and games, the little praise he had for his parents was that they named him after one of their greatest deities, albeit with slight alteration.

He looks around, still worried that this might be a bad idea. But he was tired, in need of some sustenance. Anyone who would give him trouble would meet the physical and magical abilities of his crystal rosed staff. He carefully enters the tavern, hoping that the festivities would distract everyone from him.

Iris had been warming herself by the fire, still shielded by her long hooded cloak.  She was one of the few left who was still hidden, and she planned to keep it that way.  It was a lot more comfortable before the mass of others revealed themselves to be musicians.  "Now I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb," she thought to herself as she bit her lower lip and pulled her cloak tighter against her body.

Taverns were one of her favorite hangouts back in her day, along with gang of troublemakers--Kooka, Foggy, MightyMage, just to name a few.  Ahh the fun times they had, tossing, spamming, picking fights to pass the time.  That was a long time ago.  So much has changed.

But what's this?  Iris's eyes lit up momentarily.  "Is that... is that Kooka I see over there?"  Last time she had seen Kooka was at the Outback Market, almost 4 years ago.  "Wow, she looks great, I should go talk to her," she whispered to herself.

Just then the Skeleton piano player stuck a leather purse in front of face, jiggling the bag of coins.

The piano-playing skeleton was a rather grotesque sight to behold. Clearly someone at some point had been practicing Necromancy around here. The fact that this particular skeleton was so skilled at its job, led the stranger to believe that he (or she) must have been the house pianist during his or her lifetime. The stranger rests his staff against a table, the red crystal rose glowing softly in the dim light of the tavern. Finally, one of the waiters manages to get past the musicians to take his order. "Welcome to our humble establishment! What can I get you, mr...eh..." The strager decides to take off his hood. "Horace. Call me Horace," he replies. The waiter nods and starts writing down the order. "Sure you don't want anything else?" the waiter asks. Horace shakes his head and the waiter leaves. Meat was all he needed now. No side dishes, no bread, no vegetables. Meat. And something to drink, of course.

The air was thick with testosterone and blood, the heavy beat and droning whines of her troop doing little to subdue her angst.  The same old stories reverberated around the crowd, a new town - a new ear, but hers were old and tired.

She smiled at the barmaid, careful not to ponder too long how she could stand her breasts almost exposed on such a gloomy night, and ordered another ale.  Her smile was returned in earnest, and a coin returned into her palm.  She stared at it for a minute:

A coin from her homeland.  All muscles in her face resumed neutrality.

She scanned the room a little harder and she saw a familiar shape slumped in the corner of the room.  it couldn't be... Brown eyes met hers and it took a moment for her to regain her composure.  She made her way to the ladies room hoping she would follow.

The festive, up-beat song ends as the lead musician sings the last chorus.

"Hey now, join the Honor Guard, get your game on, go play
Hey now we're the battle bards, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold"

After the last chord the lead musician lunges across the bar and grabs a bottle of wine, dropping three silvers in the process.  He chugs it as if he hasn't seen liquor in years and then tosses the remaining fourth to the other musicians, who have seated themselves around a table.

"WOOOOOOOOHHHHH!"

Greetings all ye sulky, swarthy saps. Ye doughty, dour dopes. Let's all introduce ourselves.  I am Fogwicious the ambitious! the auspicious! Some even say pernicious!  My talents are many and my humilities few.  I bring life to any party, whether sauced drunkards or armed lunkards.  I have but a single weapon and quiver of plot-advancement arrows.  Most of them I handcrafted with the utmost care but some came from a corpse found in the Pit of the Seven-Eyed Basilisk and I have no idea what magiks they might hold.  This one right here...
*pulls out an arrow that seems to glow*
"I was told by wandering Crow-born that I should only use this arrow when it is necessary, and that I would know when that time arrived.  I was about to ask what it was capable of doing but then the Crow-born disappeared with a CAWWW! CAWWWW!."
*puts the glowy arrow back in his quiver*

"Additionally, I can crank the arm on my crossbow "Gratification" faster than a drunk eye is able to follow. Allow me to demonstrate!"
*places a normal bolt in Gratification and winds the crank with a fervor*
"Voila!"
*Points the crossbow at the ceiling and fires*

A scream cries out from the rafters!  Seconds later a black, billowy mass falls with a clattering thump to the floor.  It's a man dressed all in black.  He appeared to be carrying a satchel as well, which has now spilled its contents onto the floor.

Then, with just a quick few steps towards the sprawling black mass on the floor, pushing a few startled patrons aside, he bent down and looked at the ninja.

"As suspected, Galaad, this is one of Fredmuffin's accomplices. I told you I would find him here," he said as he turned his head towards Galaad.

Even the skeleton piano player seemed to try and hide himself among the crowd, realising he could be apprehanded for being an accomplice.
