The 5 Universal Laws of Human Stupidity

In 1976, a professor of economic history at the University of California, Berkeley published an essay outlining the fundamental laws of a force he perceived as humanity’s greatest existential threat: Stupidity.

Law 1: Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

Law 2: The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

Law 3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person

The biggest problem is their unpredictability, they have no idea how dangerous they can be to others everytime they make a decision. Even intelligent people are unlikely to reasonably evaluate or deduct what they will do, what consequences there will be or even who will be affected.

EDIT:

This is a most quotable article.

At the very least there is a level of satisfaction for doing something or acting according to your own will or rationale regardless of the end result. In that sense, one could argue that there are virtually no stupid persons in the world at all. Of course, there's also those that wish misery and misfortune purposefully, but I wouldn't call them stupid.

He's an economist, so his perspective is shaped by evaluation of gain and loss. There are sure destructive or even self-destructive people who are not stupid, there are even many self-destructive geniuses. But this is not an encylopedic definition, it's rather a tongue-in-cheek interpretation and something interesting to share.

True. I was attempting a devil's advocate more or less, having taking it to thought a bit. It's an interesting subject.

Well, you more or less know what to expect from an economist Of course an economist also knows that sometimes losing something is worth it when you prevent an antagonist from gaining something but that mostly applies to the business world. Outside of it, such a decision is more than likely to carry ill intent or immaturity.

How about those of us who does not cause losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses, nor do we underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals?

Or those of us who do both?

Sorry, but this way it at least sounds a lot more like a super villain organization.
