Changing music and sounds

I know in other forum they knew how to change H4 music and sounds, but I can't seem to find it and it hasn't been discussed here anyways...

It would be nice for modding and customization to have the following information:

- WHat format does H4 use for music?

- What is the bitrate?
- How many channels? (probably either stereo or mono, I doubt it has something like 5.1 )

- Is there any difficulty packaging tracks to make a new music file?

Etc.

If anyone has answers to these questions, post them here.

So far I know that ingame sound effects are in .mp3 format and they are easily replaceable. This counts hero and creatures sounds, ambience sounds from adventure objects, dialog sounds from adventure objects, and sounds from spells.

* It is also possible, but not tested, that new sounds can be added to these where they don't exist, by just using their names. Sounds are packaged within the main H4R resource file.

But it doesn't include music, which is also in another file - apropiately called "music.h4r"

MH096 doesn't ever work for me.

That's why I wanted to set conversion myself.

Also that thread does not say the original properties of H4 music...

As for the quality... it's not about "Better" or "Worse"

It is about changed towns in my mod. I need to put new music so people instantly know it's not the "same town". For example desert town doesn't share a single creature with the old "life town", and the vocal music is inappropiate.

Same for barbarian town which is now Inferno...

Search Celestialheaven.com I recall the topic is titled 'Is this possible'. There should be a guide for replacing music.
(Sorry for not posting link, but it a bit tricky doing on my phone).

Just extract music and pack. Its simply mp3. Music is only easy to mod resource in this game? And completly DONT NEED MODDING!  We can easy mod only dont needed thing :-(

Yes, I saw it's MP3 and read.

But RESEDIT doesn't pack it, since it expects .wav
It can be packed with h4resex

Some tracks are annoying like Grass theme, which is actually a bug...

I only replace H4 music with music from other Heroes games.

For example, New necropolis now has the music of H3 necropolis included with H2 gold release.

Inferno now has inferno theme with some metal chords added, to infuriate people

Dirt theme has a variation of H2 dirt theme.
Sea is now H2 as well.
And grass theme got replaced with "Wandering", the unused section of H4 music.

I have the same problem with MH096.

While the extracted sound files are in .mp3 format and ResEdit reads only .wav files, it is somehow possible to rename .mp3 extension to .wav and still replace the original files. I have done so with replacing creature sounds one with another and it worked.
Maybe it will work with music also.

I tried that with resedit and no, the music just sounds mute that way.

I will use H4 Resource extractor to build that part of the mod as a separate file... since it can read and pack .mp3 and I have proven it works.

You must only find wav to mp3 and repeat converter. Try this maybe:
wav mp3
If not find another.

Does anyone could pack modified extracted .mp3 file to .h4d?
I tried to use H4resex, but my operating system (win 8.1) blocked it...

With the H4 resource extractor utility I could pack music and directly, but it requires a different file than the one I build with resedit.

Thus in the future I will just create a new one completely replacing music.h4r

It will take a lot of space and make the mod heavier but there's always a price to pay :V

LAME is for Audacity, is that right?

However it needs some special marker, it isn't enough just to save it.

I don't know how to put the setting for repeating so that H4 recognizes it...

Yes plugin but not works. Must be special header in each mp3.

As Ive found posted by Akuhak
Header must be:
01 00 00 10 02 44 AC 00 00 00 B4 AC 02 01 00 E0 1A 3E 00
01 00 - ??
00 10 - 16-bit (per sample)
02 - stereo
44 AC 00 00 - 44100 Hz (Sampling rate)
00 B4 AC 02 - sample count*4 which we get in step 2
01 00 - ??
E0 1A 3E 00 - exact mp3 size which we get in step 1h

...

01 00 00 10 02 44 AC 00 00 - just copy it

Next you must give ,sample count x4'??? I dont know what it is, you can read it in advanced mp3 editor? I cant in audiacity! By I give 10x file size and it works. Not perfectly but this moment I dont know how to do it 100% correctly.
At the end global file size you can read simply in folder.
Two second values must be reversed! Not 080a04 but 040a08!!! Always in Heroes hexediting values are reversed!!!

All mp3 must be hexedited like this. H4 modding is for masochists... Massacre... Simply mp3!!!

My first changed song menu of course:

new menu music
