As I understand it, it's a bit of slang, sarcastically used in my case. Basically said when someone starts with something small, and proceeds with something bigger/more dangerous, but essentially in the same vein.

He's committed acts of petty larceny before, but now he's graduated to manslaughter.

But it is still you that promotes to the rank, so "I promoted to" is used and correct, you can Google it in quotation marks and see official usage if you like.

Yes, the dictionary, thousands of examples from Google, even the editors of New York Times are all wrong:

Baldwin, later promoted to sergeant, was killed at the Battle of Stones River on Dec. 31, 1862.

It's not that you can never admit when proven wrong. If the object of the sentence is the rank itself, it's legit to use "subject promotes to object."

Harry promoted John. John got/was promoted. John promoted to chief assistant.

What is actually dense is replying as if I'm claiming "I was promoted" is wrong, both are correct.

Baldwin, (who was) later promoted to sergeant (by a superior), was killed at the Battle of Stones River on Dec. 31, 1862.

What's in the parenthesis is implied. It's called a posthumous promotion, where to deceased is being promoted, not promoting himself to a rank. That's a bad usage of the verb that even common sense would flag right away, he couldn't "promote" since he's dead.

You can never "promote" to a rank, you "are promoted".

Last one's not a correct usage of the verb.

You're dense for not realizing that Google is correcting your own example to proper forms.

Baldwin, first promoted to sergeant, and then he was killed. Google is not "correcting" anything, it is autofilling the more common usage. I already copy-pasted the dictionary, the verb promote defines both the act of promoting someone else (3rd meaning) AND the act of raising to a higher rank. Anybody with common sense would have got that comparing the two meanings. There are countless examples, if you dont only read the autofill but actually go ahead and click on the thousands of results for "I promoted to" you can simply read them, instead of beating a dead horse. Now, either you are wrong or those hundreds of examples which includes books, professional articles, blogs by native speakers are wrong, which one do you think is the case?

Not to mention, it's not always someone else who promotes you, especially if you use the verb as a figure of speech. Nobody promoted poly to batcrap crazy, poly promoted to batcrap crazy. You play a computer game, you are a knight and then you promote to paladin. In chess, a pawn promotes to a more valuable piece if it reaches the other end of the board, etc: When a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it promotes. from Rules of Chess. Notice how it doesn't say "it gets promoted."

In short, there are literally countless examples with the template "X promoted to -insert rank-" The dictionary article supports the usage. You just assume it's wrong because "to get or to be promoted" is more common than the first one and you are not used to it:

I was a Children's Librarian for six months before I promoted to Community Library Manager.
