New Puzzle

1 + 4 = 5
2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21
5 + 8 = ?

This one took me around half a minute. I suspect sleep lag was a factor but still, harder than the last.

Let's see your answers!

45 here, too, but I'm curious about Neraus' line of reasoning.

Mine went like this:

The general formula is  x + y = z

So the sequence goes like:
x1 + y1 = z1
x2 + y2 = z1
x3 + y3 = z3
--------------------
x5 + y5 = z5
--------------------

The lines represent statements that I think were omitted from the sequence.  So I noticed a pattern where  x(n) * y(n+1) = z(n)
So following that pattern works for the first two statements, and that's where I got the idea that there were others which were omitted.  If  x4 + x4 = z4 statement was actually 4 + 7 = 32, then x3 * y4 = z3 would be a valid equation.  Now,  the x5 + y5 = z5 statement would be 5 + 8 = 45, following that reasoning, and the one after it 6 + 9 = 60, id est, the other omitted statement.  If my assumptions are true, then the x5 * y6 = z5 ewuation would be 5 * 9 = 45, with 45 being the answer to the puzzle.

This was very interesting.

I used a simpler way, I multiplied the two and then added the first number.

Oh I thought it like this

1 + 4 = 5
(5)+ 2 + 5 = 12
(12)+ 3 + 6 = 21
(21)+ 5 + 8 = 34

But then aren't you skipping 4+7? All others add +1 to both numbers.

I admit that adding the previous result to each was an easier observation to make. I didn't notice it.

HAHAHA if you add the missing 4+7 and then calculate 5+8 in the same manner you still get 45

Damn that was tricky.

What 4+7? Not given in the original, not part of the sequence.

Exactly. If what was asked had been the next sequence, instead of the given 5 + 8, that could have been an alternative answer. But as thnigs are, the answer should be 34.
