you won't be able to merge 'snow terrain bears' with 'forest terrain bears. I think players would find that unfortunate.

No problem, in my design you can merge them into hybrids, then these just set the layers texture mask to 50% transparency for example :V

Yet many players complained H6 had too much modifier complexity in their fine-tuned spells and balance system, and prefer a streamlined/simplified game.

.g you could argue that Necropolis should be able to convert ALL creatures to undead

I don't think that would be like that, for example, demons, angels, constructs, golems, and elementals would all be immune to being turned undead.

This was more a problem with the "undead transformer" from h3 and h4 - that turned creatures into generic undeads instead of actual undead versions of themselves (it even worked with golems, angels, demons, etc.). Then you could put them into your normal stacks and far outrecruit any other town.

With this new option, "undead griffins" would still be their own stack instead of being merged into your giant endless skeleton army...

PS what is restoration of Heroes, can you give a link?

I only know about my "Heroes Infinity" pre-project.

Other than that, VCMI is the closest we have as it is open source, but it is only a reimplementation of heroes 3 and not a general universal Heroes engine (though I am sure bits of the code could be adapted to other projects).
