This is probably known... (Multiple orbs in H3)

Now, I played H3 at single player or with family many times...

But only a couple of years ago I joined this forum and stuff.

Orbs like Orb of Rain add +50% to the effect of direct damage spells of a school.

These orbs go in the Misc section.

There are 4 slots on the misc section.

If you get 4 identical orbs, do they go to +200%?

Or do they remain at +50%?

If they go all the way to 200%, this would be a good way to allows mapmakers to boost magic heroes to scale better into late-ish game and not be so outshined by Might heroes in regular H3. (not sure if this still happens in HoTA)

You can only wear one specific orb at a time, but you can wear orbs of different elements.
Earth and Fire are the strongest. (Armageddon & Implosion)
Water is the weakest. (Ice Bolt and Frost Ring)
All orbs boost Magic Arrow though.

Water is seriously weak on the damage department (even if Frost Ring does have nice utility value at least, hurt all creatures but yours... yet it doesn't work on large creatures. Too bad)

Earth also has Meteor Shower and Fire also has Inferno (and fireball) as useful (if not supreme) damage spells.

***

Only one at the time? Strange. And what if they are put already equipped on hero on the scenario editr? Is that possible?

(If I knew how, I would remove the "one at a time" limit. 4 orbs FTW!)

That could sure make some powerful spellcasters.
I would be very afraid of a high powered hero, perhaps a Sorcery specialist, with Armageddon or Implosion with 4 fire or earth orbs.

Well, I have been running some tests, and it's bad news for our little theoretical scenario.

You can place up to five orbs pre-equipped on the editor, sure.
Apparently, you can also equip more than one of them normally.
But their effects do not stack.

The "good" news is as expected the effects of the Orbs are not a multiplier to total spell damage, not only to base one.

So if you have +100% effectiveness from Expert level magic...
(So, say, you cast Earth spells at 200% efectiveness), the Orb  will give you +50% to that damage, not only stack with the base one.
If this would be otherwise, it would be a +50% to that 200%. So 250%. Not very impressive, only a 25% increase (I suspect Sorcery works the same way, but have not tested it. Also the hero I tested this on had Expert sorcery, so that may or may not be interfering with my measurements.)

For reference, Expert Water Magic Ice bolt with Orbs/s (Either 1 or more, doesn't matter) and expert sorcery on a 9 power spellcaster dealth 396 damage (with 40 of them being listed as "extra" damage on the spellbook).

Without the orb/s, the damage for this spell was 264, so it gave exactly +50% at +132 (including the sorcery bonus beforehand, one would assume)

PS: In case anybody was wondering (I did), bonuses on Magic Arrow from more than one orb do not stack either.

Now, if there only was a way to edit the game to make them Orbs stackable...

Well of course Era can be edited to do that.

The function that checks for whether Orbs are equipped (and for Sorcery) is 0x4E59D0.
You could make a plugin to modify how it works... or do like Sal suggested.

ERA still buggy and incomplete like last time?
I mean, it's a noble project, but still not like the "real thing"...

I think I will ask Ubisoft for the H3 and H4 source code :V

Generally nothing stacks, the only exceptions I know are two Quiet Eyes of the Dragon and the gold artifacts.

What are you talking about? Era is mods platform, means is buggy if you don't know how to code. The 150 mods (except Sagamosa which is kept for history) proposed in download atm generate no crash at all.

I think I was thinking about VCMI then, the one that is a remake of H3 rather than just mod platform...

Anyways... I did not play H3 for years and my memory is shoddy.

But I had enough nightmares modding H4 to try again something without the source code :V

Don't "+1 health", "+1 speed" and such artifacts stack? Vials of dragonblood, Ring of Health, etc.?

Yes the different health and speed artifacts stack, but wearing two of the same rings only works once.
The only artifact I know that stack, is Quiet Eye of the Dragon (+1 attack & +1 defense)

I don't know how to code and my Era is stable. My impression is is usually bad installs, conflicting mods etc that cause crashes, like that other dude who installed it over Hota for one example.

Probably that's not because of the artifact but because primary skill bonuses always stack regardless...

But yes, I have been trying stuff and you are correct, the Glyps of Gallantry, Medals, and Luck amulets also don't stack more than once of the same. But combine two different ones of the same effect, and they do stack.

Well, at least that solves the mystery of having more than one artifact do the exact same thing (also applies to both rings that give +1 health)

This observations seems to NOT apply for H4 as well for luck and morale, as they both stack even if the same identical artifact is used more than once - and there are still more than one variety of them.
(where it is much less important probably for morale and luck-boosting artifacts since morale and luck are both more plentiful and less powerful)

Also stacking in H4 on multiple repeated artifacts are percentage boosts for army defense/attack, sight bonuses, stats bonuses for hero and probably most etc.

What I meant is bad coded mods make the game unstable, not Era which is a simple platform allowing erm language. So if you play tested mods (as those proposed by wakeofgods.org) you are safe, no bugs.

I mean: two legs of legion, angel feathers, crests of valor or other artifacts you can have more them one equal on the same hero, you can't have two capes of velocity equipped and two rings of the wayfarer don't stack. Now, cape of velocity stacks with ring of the wayfarer and necklace of swiftness but they are different artifacts.
All gold artifacts stack too but not rings of gems or carts of wood...

Just saw you had explained the above already. Yes, in Heroes IV all artifacts stack, for instance you can have two equestrian gloves and they give the same movement as one pair of boots, this is also true for the sextants.

More Legs of Legion don't stack either, I take it?
(In H4 artifacts of "statue of legion" appear in artifact list but not ingame, they just crash)

Hello,

These were Pretty nice reads. Thanks NimoStar. Especially that the orb amplify the damage from sorcery (so it is multiplication and not straight addition like offense + attack skill + lluck bonus)

so are you using VCMI or Era 2? if you have both which you liked better?

also, dont hesitate to try out few stuff in coding for heroes 3.

If you want to have head start, just have a look at the scripts from wog, and at this link there are plenty of useful and handy information/manuals
