I got a call last night..

My mother picked up the phone, it was my sister crying, saying she was at the police station. She was in shock and could hardly speak and a woman from the station came on the line. She said my sister was driving without a licence, passed a red light and hit a young black woman, killing her. Her husband wanted 20k euros to not escalate things and she asked if we could gather that sum. Also that we should not tell anyone because if that got to the tv it would turn out ugly and have an impact on our work. Before she ended the call she suggested that we do not come personally to the station because the deceased woman's friends and relatives were there and it could potentially be dangerous.

My mother was understandably shaken. My sis was facing 15 years in prison easily and if such a thing became known, it could have a dramatic impact on our company. She spent the night running scenarios in her mind and doing chores around the house. She only had an hour of sleep, from 5 to 6 in the morning.

Today a friend with connections to the police came over and suggested it could be one of three things: 1) This could actually have happened and that would be bad 2) My sis could be in a bad crowd of junkies and she orchestrated this to get money 3) He then asked if that was really my sister's voice on the phone. Because it could be a scam arranged by anyone.

My mother insisted it was her. My sister had not answered when I called her previously but when I called again, she said..

"Yes, what?"

She was asleep at her place, blissfully unaware of the whole incident of course. Well, that was interesting. I still haven't quite understood why they didn't at least attempt to get some money out of us in the night. Perhaps they knew that my sis would be hard to find last night, her being at a concert but that was all the more reason for them to have pressed their advantage. Did they expect that we'd have money we didn't? Not like I would go make shady dealings in the dark if I did but it's just weird.

Phone scammers at the best by the looks of it.

It's usually when they demand a sum that you can figure out a hoax. many can't though, that's why you hear about grannies forking over their savings from under the matress without any second thought.

It's a common tactic to get money out of old folks. They hope to squeeze the life savings of loving and impressionable old people with some tragic story involving a family member.

My grandmother actually got such a call, saying that another family member was involved in a car crash and he needed money for surgery. She rushed to the hospital and found out it was a scam and there was no car accident.

Nowadays, the tactic is so common, that there are even posters plastered by the local authorities in public transportation warning of such shady scams and their modus operandi.

Well, maybe they sample your voice from Facebook etc and artificially imitate it or use pro voice actors but that sounds too high tech and expensive for your regular swindler.

Also, Elvin, your friend is wrong, once in the police station, if there is a death, the thing is official and you can not choose to pay and let it go. The cops simply dont have the authority to allow that, so you guys should have realized it was a scam from the get go.

They target you in the night when you are tired and ready to lost consciousness, the older you are the more vulnerable you are, plus they use persons you care for the most, your children. All these elements gets to your nerves and you don't really use your brain like you should at that particular moment.

@Elvin: back when cellular phones were not mainstream, I had to call my mother from different locations. If we had any doubt on who was on the phone, we had a sentence to say and the other had the reply. That sounds a bit 007 but believe me when it is crucial informations you have to share it really doesn't seem that overrated. Agree on a code sentence that would mean "I am in the black poo".

Well being the third most corrupted country according to Sal's statistics, we beat you to it. We constantly have SMS messages from actual law enforcement warning us to never believe anybody who introduces themselves as a police officer on the phone, if any money is involved.

Corruption doesn't equal scamming. high corruption always start with officials groups, I recall back in my early days in Romania, you could get away with almost anything, just by paying them hand to hand. When there is no press to denounce such practices, they only flourish.

Oh, I wasnt objecting to corruption in the country, just putting on some sarcasm to it.

However, in Elvin's case, the story is still not plausible because it's not one cop involved anymore, they got to the station. The whole station to go along with such a thing over a traffic accident, that just doesnt add up.

The money was not requested by the police but rather the husband of the victim, so as not to take this to the channels and make a big scene.

I didn't listen in on the conversation so all I had was fragmented pieces. If I had heard some of the details that my mother shared later, I wouldn't have believed it. But she told me she'd talked to my sister which I didn't have reason to doubt. My sis has appeared on youtube so it shouldn't have been too hard to find a sample of her voice even if the scammer didn't personally know her. But I find it surprising that my mother would be deceived like that. The voice was emotionally charged and there was also crying but still..

Yes, what I mean is, once there is a body and a report and this gets to the station, ALL cops involved should fake documents in such a case and even if you assmue they can all be in on it, the amount of bribe needed wouldnt just add up to the scale of the incident.

I know it's very different to actually find yoruself in the middle of such a thing instantly, especially if you're in a sleepy, busy, panicked or whatever state of mind and to read it on the internet afterwards. For a brief period I could have also fallen for it, had we not been constantly warned by the real law enforcement by SMS. What I'm saying is, your friend presenting the 3 possibilities was wrong, number one is not a plausible possibility.

More importantly, it's someone who knows your family quite a bit that did that, one of yours/your mum's/your sis' acquaintances. You can hardly rob someone you don't know.

Well most scams aren't plausible yet some still fall into them, caught up by emotion and fatigue not everyone will keep their rational thoughts. Since Elvin's mother was clearly convinced it was with her daughter that she spoke, the income of emotions can easily take the upper hand, it's only human and natural.

I don't know Stevie, something feels off with your know-it-all atittude but maybe that's me being not up to speed with current HC.
I think, given the context, he meant
Quote:
You can hardly rob someone in that manner if you don't know them.

and surely you would agree to that, this required precise knowledge about her absence, have the mother's phone number and prepare a method to convince her that it was in fact her daughter she was speaking with.

Damn Elvin, I know how believable this all can seem in the heat of the moment and I still feel I might get caught unawares had it happen to me just because of how seemingly absurd it would be for someone to make up a story like that. You lost a night and maybe hue from a hair or two but at least that was the end of it. I wonder if you have a suspect?
