What make Heroes game "Heroes"

2 last series of Heroes installment has been highly regarded as failure by community. Several of the reasons being buggy gameplay, cut down budget, too conservative, and too much change at the same time. Because of that I'm curious to what makes heroes game "heroes", what is the core value or core mechanic that is the identity of the heroes game? What makes you think Heroes game is different than other fantasy turn based game let's say Age of Wonder series for example. If let's say Heroes 8 comes out and it has dynamic fog of war, unit cap per heroes, and unit upkeep, would you still call it a heroes game?

I have played Heroes 2-5, but don't care about 6 & 7 and I have played most of the Age of Wonders games and they are good games, I still prefer Heroes though, especially Heroes 3.
What makes Heroes Heroes for me, is that it is a charming turn based old school gaming series with good music and graphics. It's easy to play, but hard to master. It can be played by people of age 9 or 99. There are many factions and creatures, which are all (relatively) good balanced. There are combat spells and adventure spells and artifacts and creature abilities. All the different creatures, spells, skills, heroes etc. allows players to form different strategies and to counter their opponents strategies, this makes for interesting gameplay every game. Creatures must travel around the map lead by a hero. Creatures can be affected by good or bad morale and luck. The hero plays a more or less active role in combat.
Map can be traveled by land, water or air and there is possibly at least one underground level. Game comes with scenarios and campaigns and scenario and campaign editor and the ability to play singleplayer and multiplayer offline and online.
That's Heroes for me. Heroes 3 did almost everything right, except a few balance issues.

Baronus

Heroes needs,
1. Simple game system but big with a lot of elements. Exploration, skilling, combat, buildings, econony. System is first.
2. Good AI which is offensive but not in stupid way. Must attack us to make game interesting.
3. A lot of towns. 9 is minimum. HIII. And all town must be another.
4. A lot of units 150 minimum. HIII And all unit must own abilities.
5. Big and good skill system. Minimum 180 levels. HIV
6. Big and good spell system. In HIII 276 levels! And better is not to learn all spells for all heroes,
7. Good Heroes design with special abilities.
8. Beauty graphic.
9. Wonderfull music.
10. Open source code to mod it.
11. Programming by open script system eg. lua not hardcodded in exe. Somthing like WoG or VCMI.
12. Mobile version too.
13. Big and good artifacts system especially with combos,
14. Big and good alchemy system rather like MM VII-VIII but better
15. Good editor with RMG.
16. Importing own pics and sounds to map not only txt.
...
We dont need:
1. 3D models. And 3D world.
2. Battle cutscenes.
3. Big unit animations 1000 or more frames.
4. Dynamic lights.
5. Isometric look for units.
...
All other can be to discuss.

That's a good explanation but that is what should be an ideal heroes game is, not what heroes game is. Can a heroes game be summarized with
1. have town and build town
2. have heroes that explore the map
3. have separate mode for battling creature on the big map.
?

Well, that characterize a dozens of strategy games out there, so no. Not only. The lore should be same, then specific technical details, although I think no one would be shocked by some changes to the core if the game finally rocks.

a number of things but I'd say the most important things are a 1. RPG leveling system for heroes who can 2. bring armies around in order to 3. explore a map and gather resources in a campaign map in a turn based fashion and occasionally 4. battle in a separate battle map and 5. capture and develop towns to improve economy and gain access to stronger and better creatures.

I'd say that's it really but I do think some differentiating between might and magic is important and factions should be primarily made up of DnD or mythological creatures centered around a philosophical theme.

Owning all 6 Heroes games

What makes the Heroes series stand out in the gaming world?

It is like taking the very old game of Warlords 1 and its sequel(Warlords II) to a much more advanced level of strategic and economic approach to war-gaming.

JVC simply implemented the much anticipated approach to the army generals development in an innovative way. So this time around the general(Heroes) are, now, capable of using magic by simply learning them via mage guilds that are, also, buildable and growable up to the very high potency of level 5. Although some of the factions such as the Orcs, will limit itselves to the level 3 of blood calling type of offensive and brutal approach to buff the willingness of the troops to inflict more damage against any enemy they get to encounter.

So, when the battle arena is required to do combat against the encountered enemy, Chess is the approach that is considered here, with, obvious innovative battle properties such as ranged and melee capabilities.

Heroes is also made for easy interaction between children young and teenagers alike. It is not a thorough RPG that becomes strategic after exploring and gathering enough troops in order to rather invade a native village of the specifically chosen map nor, to use a number of level ones that makes the back bone of a civilization and build a village from scratch one in a properly chosen area of the currently in use map. And, from there, explore even more in order to find your opponents settlements for invading them or totally genocide them from the map forever. Moreover, making sure to develop your town to a properly defensible status would be quite preferable.

Do you see the imminent lack of seriousness that is brought upon us with this underdeveloped approach of a turn based game? I do find that the true potential of this type of TBS game has ended with JVC's game of Heroes III(any version or iteration through modding that exists today).
