Poll Question:
Best stronghold hero?

Which hero would you prefer as main hero when playing as Stronghold?
(I've tried choosing 3 of the best heroes of each class imo.)

Crag Hack (Barbarian)
Tyraxor (Barbarian)
Gretchin (Barbarian)
Dessa (Battle Mage)

I think Dessa can enjoy getting the secondary skills of a mage whilst maintaining the might advantage of Logistics.

Okay, but this is not about Wake of Gods.
Guess you already placed a vote on Other though.

I'm curious.  What gives Dessa an edge over Crag Hack?

It was always my understanding, based on posts I've read on these boards, that Crag Hack was the best hero in the game.

His Logistics specialty means he will eventually be able to reach a lot further than any other Hero. Collect more items (especially artifacts) and intercept enemy Heroes. He simply acquires more resources than any other Hero on the board and those are worth more than a stronger attack.

vs AI maybe because AI doesn't know how to optimize movement - don't forget that human players recruit 8 heroes from day 1. The movement bonus is too little and requires very high levels, then the distribution of stats is balanced as magic hero, multiplayer is about medium/large maps where core fights are before 3rd week therefore natural fighter specialists still remain the best and have best statistics.

So what is the reason for logistic specialists being banned in multi?

modern multi uses closed templates, and on those you can level your main without any skirmish, therefore they fear logistic heroes, necro, hit and run, dim door and so on. They changed the game to such degree that half of features now are unbalanced. But on vanilla templates the fact that your main moves more doesn't change that any hero he meets can be at least as strong if not better in stats.

I don't say logistic isn't good, is great and I always change to this specialty when playing custom maps, it saves me about 1 month out of 10. Also in multi a logistic hero is difficult to handle and will often finish his turn out of reach of other scouts, therefore with slow creatures. It is much easier to calculate chain out of logistic specialty.

So you basically think that the skill itself isnt imba, but the templates made it so? Well, looking at the design of for example Jebus that makes sense.

From my experience, skill is great on custom maps, those who last 6-12 months, but it lacks advantage on closed templates if compared to natural fighting skills, as archery/offense/armorer specialties. In such games you spend 80% of the time in battles, then to break guards you need army from 3rd week, so anyway you have to wait for it. Then one of the most game changing advantages of logistic specialist (for me), which is to hit and run from a comfortable distance thus the other gets over stressed and starts making erratic errors, is banned, so is not that great.

This.
Dessa is the only Logistics hero with only necessary starting skills, in Single much more important then primary skills. While Gunnar has a top skill for multi but not for single, Kyrre is burdened with Archery, good for secondary heroes taking crypts and treasuries, not a necessary skill for main.

Indeed, the H&R tactic with Logistic heroes is a swell one yet rare to see these days minding all the rules.

Some templates makes it imba, eg those with a lot of short-roaded cross-creature spawns, where you zigzag-battle each creature stack while your chainer-dummies can walk in a straight line. Alas, those moments are rare and like Sal already pointed out, it is a rather inconvenient skill to have when you are trying to calculate your movement or work with your chainer-dummies. It also risks spoiling a M1W1D7 retreat to the castle on maps where your main has taken a bad turn.

I didn't play hota templates, but I remember seeing some games online, didn't they add some dwellings giving cyclopes? because the battles I saw both had about 100 cyclopes, wiverns then angles, so looks to me archery is useful in final battle now.

HotA brings only one new template Nostalgia XXL for XL+ map as far as remember. HotA team only modified random map generator to spawn some of hota's new objects. But it works like wogification rather - all available RMG txt files remain unchanged.

Logistics shines a lot of maps where the middle zone is a lot richer than the other zones. On those maps the first player to get to the middle wins, just because all the good stuff - relics/utopias/cons/hives is in the middle.

I picked Dessa because of the lame specialty (and I play Dessa 80% of the time because of this reason alone).

When Dessa is not available I pick Gundula. Yeah, I've heard others that Crag Hack is better but... I usually prefer spellcasters to warriors, and Gundula does tend to pick up some knowledge and spell power from time to time, unlike the bland Crag Hack.

But anyway, there's no debate that Dessa is the better Stronghold hero... as voted by everyone
