This is going to be a serious spoiler if you haven't seen the movie but without the context, the scene won't mean anything, so:

Our protagonist, Salvatore is a little kid in a small town in rural Italy, right after WW2. The town has a theatre and cinema is magical to him, he skips school to watch every new movie and so on... Then, we have Alfredo, an old grumpy machinist, in charge of playing the films. Salvatore the kid, tricks his way into being Alfredo's assistant. Meanwhile, before the films go public, there is a preview by the town priest, he watches everything and if he decides a scene is too obscene and violates code of conduct, he rings a bell. Alfredo bookmarks the scene and cuts it out from the film roll. The kid asks him what he does with the pieces he cuts out, if they have no use, can he have them? Alfredo says if he behaves and stops being such a pain in the ass, he'll give them to him in the future. (This scene is just one of their regular chit-chat, you have no idea of its importance before the finale strucks you.) Years go passing by, Salvatore grows up, they become close friends, Alfredo urges him to get out of that lost small town and make something of himself. Salvatore leaves, becomes this big shot director and one day he gets a call, Alfredo is dead, his funeral is about to be held. He returns to the poor, small town of his upbringing. Alfredo left him something, a film roll, what is it? Back in the city, he gives it to a machinist to play: Ennio Morricone
