Artificial Intelligence, Theory of Consciousness, Quantum Biology

https://aeon.co/essays/true-ai-is-both-logically-possible-and-utterly-implausible

An important note:

Conscious AI is not necessary for autonomous AI. So, using a cartoon example, you could build a terminator with sufficient robotics, sensory tools, and algorithmic programming that it could walk, run, and have advanced manual dexterity, be acceptably conversant with people (although algorithms are not capable of interpreting semantics since it doesn't employ binary logic, hence why linguists aren't even a little bit in danger of being obsolete), and complete missions, all the while being no more sentient than a rock. And that is just a pedestrian example of a bipedal robot, not a defense grid or something. So, as AI advances, there is still a big concern in terms of programming.

But, following the current trend, Moore's Law does not mean true AI even if you were to fast forward 1000 or 10000000000 years. A radical breakthrough in science would be required that goes beyond employing algorithmics. For the past 50 years we've mostly been perfecting binary code.

Hey BB stop what you're doing and read this wicked cool sci-fi story called Blindsight.  It got a bunch of awards a few years back and is also free to download. I don't want to ruin the story but it's related to this thread.

btw I agree with the article, and I think Elon Musk's fear of a AI is a bit dippy.  But whatever, when you get to be as rich as Musk is, it's your right to be eccentric.

edit:
lol, speaking of AI's my roomies just got a roomba

When you've worked an average of 100 hours per week  for the past 15 years, including 8 diet cokes a day, I think it's safe to say your personality is going to be an outlier.

But hey, I still admire the start ups he funds. If nothing else they are interesting.

And he's not necessarily wrong. An AI program can still obliterate civilization even if it has the true intelligence of a rock. It just takes some defunct code here or there.

That's a fairly good, although somewhat unbalanced article on the matter (the author does not seem as determined to debunk the arguments of the "Atheists" as he does with the "Singularwhatthehellsthatname???"). Doomsday scenarios involving AI are not unlikely but that's not because it will become human-grade intelligent any time soon but because automated technologies are becoming more and more widespread in all aspects of life and 99%+ of the population don't know how they work any further than clicking on buttons/touchscreens but become more and more dependent on them at the same time. I certainly don't find it impossible to have some nuke launched because of a glitch in the code or the hardware of the computers which manage its systems but a real Sky Net is not expected any time soon.

I tend to lean in the AI-theist direction. Neuroscience is still in an infantile stage but right now it is estimated that there are more synaptic patterns than there are atoms in the known universe... So in terms of constructing a platform that can even reach .01% of organic creativity, I'm not sure if anybody realizes exactly what that undertaking involves.

The computer revolution has changed a lot of things, but a 2017 smartphone is still an electronic abacus. Any dangers in the future come down to programmers or glitches, i.e. the dangers are in people.

heheh,just found this article about

"A WELL-KNOWN engineer who worked at Google and Uber has founded a new religion called Way of the Future, which will worship an artificial intelligence god."

I laughed the most at this because I have first-hand experience with it:
"“The recent coverage of AI as a single, unified power is a predictable upshot of a self-aggrandising Silicon Valley culture that believes it can summon a Godhead,” says Thomas Arnold, a Research Associate at Tufts University’s Human-Robot Interaction Laboratory."

You could emulate "true" AI with binary - it just isn't easy.

Our neurons also interact in a "Binary" way in certain logic... it either receives stimulus, or it doesn't (although there is also intensity etc., but this is also emulatable with floating point numerics.

In other words, you can build an "artificial brain" in top of binary code.

It just isn't efficient.

Also capitalism is not incentivated at creating "true" AI but more of the terminator you speak of.

What is the point of developing AI investments? Same as everything else: Making profit.

There is no profit in just reproducing human-like consciousness, since you already have billions of surplus humans with human brains.

These billions of surplus humans are incredibly troublesome in certain scenarios so replacing at least some of them with obedient profit-machines (quite literally) does make sense to your regular capitalist who considers himself irreplaceable in the same way (and he's right, as far greed is concerned). The thing is, you don't need a real AI to do that replacement as you can utilize the advanced calculators which we already have and also, replacing too many people with machines will create an unemployed force which, unless fed in another way, will ultimately rebel - which is never good for profit, except if you're in the weapons industry.

Oh yes, of course the surplus humans get replaced anyways. What I was saying is that the replacement doesn't need "real" AI.

Which is what OP was about. The "Terminator" described could do all the regular job functions required of most employment without the need of conscious awareness. Indeed, conscious awareness may very well be more problem than it's worth, and a rather undesirable trait for something you just want to use as an endless supply of free repetitive labor.

In such a profit sense, "just-what-you-need-to-do" mindless programming may be just better than "self-aware AI" in 99% of applications. Indeed, "just-what-you-need-to-do" programming is what is most often expected of people in jobs, not independent creative thought.

Then we mostly agree but I really don't expect any doomsday scenarios where automatons replace humans en masse in most professions simply because, having no way to earn their sustenance, the humans will simply try to take it by force. The other angle is that supply is worthless without demand so unless you create an economy where robots buy the products which other robots produce, it's just economically suicidal to leave a large number of people without income.

The world could be gradually transitioning to a resource based economy by then, depending on how superabundant most supply becomes.
