Flat characters, rehashed plot (mix of Empire and Jedi), Disneyfied universe, internal contraditions, trolling, asspulls. Even the prequels were better.

Seems TLJ suffered a big drop in earnings this weekend. Bad PR, weak movie or simply the people who wanted to watch it stormed the cinema in the initial week?

It's not that I want to pester this movie, but I think a clear message should be sent that they ought to handle movies with such a pedigree a bit differently (not as a directors personal 'experiment').

Pretty much. The message is clear that people will see a star wars movie no matter what but whether they keep supporting it, that's up to the movie itself. This movie was made on the assumption that people will swallow everything just because it's star wars and because it's shiny. Just give us some good writing, some good characters and some good lightsaber fights - the rest are more or less nitpicking.

It's funny how Rouge One, a movie that was meant to be a filler, is far better in terms of both script writing and the spirit of SW. That's my opinion at least...

Rogue One sucked balls. Whole movie was one big rush, no downtime, no likable characters, retcons, bad cgi, bad music, overtly Disney morals, stupid plot

People will not automatically see a Star Wars movie because it is Star Wars. That is mostly true in the US and the British Commonwealth countries, where Star Wars has been enshrined into the culture since 1977. There is a strong nostalgia there to make people show up. I looked up the stats on Box Office Mojo. Even France and Germany aren't selling nearly as many tickets as the UK. Italy flat out doesn't give a ****. It made like 5 million there on opening weekend compared to 37 mil in the UK.

It's not such a big deal in the non-English world and even Force Awakens didn't perform to Disney's expectations in China or India or Latin America where they were really hoping to enkindle a new & devoted fan base. I can safely assume that the Last Jedi will kill off a lot of people in those countries from further curiosity in the SW universe. And yeah, if Luke rubs off as being pathetic to a Western audience you can guarantee he will be even more hated in somewhere like China with a more rigorous work/character ethos. They have words for people like that. The movie chose to be political and those political undertones aren't going to go over well in the world's largest potential market. They slapped in the Vietnamese-American actress as bait to make it more relatable, as if they care.

I mean I'm sure SW is well-known but you have to go to the US to see widespread Star Wars mania/fanaticism. The Fast and Furious franchise does better overseas than SW.

Well a couple of my friends here in Poland declare to be Star Wars fans, wear t-shirts and all. In Czech Republic you had this census were 15k people declared to worship jediism, even if it was a form of a social protest. What I mean is: you can just brush this phenomenon as being a USA/British thing, the movies are pretty popular all over and people do not shy away from showing this, even if their numbers aren't that impressive here. And a lot of people here went to cinema based only on 'nostalgia' factor, myself included. I don't remember seeing a cinema hall this full in recent time...

I saw it today with my parents and honestly... I liked it. Sure, the Disney lines here and there are annoying and there is some inconsistencies but nothing that would ruin the movie for me or anything. Guess I'm much more tolerant with SW than with HOMM...

A wasted opportunity though. It is fun but it will not stand the test of time.

Btw I watched Kevin Smith's review and he is such a fanboy that it's adorable There are a number of things that he'd have done differently but he sure enjoyed it for what it was.

An interesting read. Most of us have no doubt noticed what the author is talking about and it may or not sway anyones' feelings. But to be fair, that was a balsy move and certainly not without merit.

Of course, the same could be said for what happened to heroes. In the end it comes down to how you feel about the formula changing in that particular way. Should it change? No doubt. But how much and in which ways? That's a harder answer.

To avoid generalizing, it never did bother me that Luke is no longer a knight in shining armour or that the main chars keep screwing up. This one(also a good read) mentions a guy who hated doctor Zhivago because writing poetry in Siberian winter would make no sense as the ink would have frozen. Logical yes but frankly annoying. But on the other end of the spectrum, rather than a single story element, it is the majority of the last jedi that makes no sense. And that's because of bad/incomplete/negligent writing. It goes to different places which I appreciate but it skips steps or stumbles on obstacles of its own making. I do not know if I will find the film better or worse on rewatching but I believe that my feelings will remain mixed.

There are plot holes and there are plot holes.

Doctor Zhivago is like ten times better than the Last Jedi is.

Over 75% of The Last Jedi is built on a ridiculous false dilemma that shouldn't exist.

Edit: also, if this movie is divisive now, people will like it even less in a year and in 5 years. That's just how it works when people are hyped. Avatar made like a zillion dollars and now in 2017 a lot of people will tell you they don't even like the movie (I still think it is good and I'm excited for the trilogy coming out). So TLJ is ****ed. I think it might be the least liked Star Wars movie.

@Bliz

That was probably not the author's point but there is a lot of ground between not that bad and actually good..

Meanwhile, a new petition demands that Rotten Tomatoes be shut down because it skews movie scores in favor of "Disney blockbuster movies" (including The Last Jedi)

Ah, fan antics

@Elvin

I can get why some don't like to see Luke become a grim, fallen hero, but I don't find your shortcut with Heroes and fan antics to be legit, h7 remains the worst rated entry in the entire series, unlike SW8.

The Luke part is admittedly kind of subjective. I think he's pathetic and I wanted more if nothing else because Mark Hammil is an underrated actor on screen. He was debatably not so much a knight in shining armor in ESB either (defying his master and all that) but he did stuff, unlike making his entire character transformation happen off screen, going from somebody that fought to the end to somebody that crawled into a hut to die.

There are even plot inconsistencies with the previous film (Luke is the one who left the starchart in order to be contacted, and now he says he specifically went to the island to hide and die. It made no sense).

How and why this happened is a mystery. I can sit down and watch Moana or Frozen - an animated movie with an emphasis toward children- and get a clean and consistent story with actual humor, and yet they allegedly can't hire people to produce a competent Star Wars movie. Was somebody influencing all of Johnson's decisions? Again, I don't understand what happened.

What I think failed in this trilogy is that they didn't put down a framework for the trilogy as a whole. When George Lucas made Episode 4, he already had a story for 5 and 6 together in the works. When he started on the prequel trilogy, he had overarcing story arcs laid out as well.

This one? JJ Abrams made the first one and then Rian Johnson had nothing else to work with in terms of plotlines or overall story development other than the loose, open ends of TFA. It shows. It's like two different architects designed a floor of a house, without worrying about the general skeletal framework in which these floors actually had to form, well, you know, a house.

Episode 9 spoilers: JJ Abrams inserts a new chain of mysteries that have no answer and trolls an extra billion dollars out of people. For further reference, please watch "Lost".

Upcoming in May we can watch Solo, assuming Kathy Kennedy doesn't fire more directors that challenge her despotic reign. The main actor is from Terminator Genisys, which I never watched, but supposedly he can't act for ****. It will be fun to see them botch the corpse of Han Solo but I won't be doing it in the theater.
