It is much less slimey than that.

In addition to taking off some of the sourness, egg whites make a great foaming agent. I simply use my milkshake frother and wallah. I got a cocktail with a thick layer of foam. Except freshly-squeezed lemon is an anti-foaming agent Unless you boil it.

You can also put off the sourness by simply adding more maple syrup, but after a certain point you're drinking candy instead of bourbon.

The moral of the story, class, is that egg whites are important.

I prefer to drink it neat as I enjoy the burn, which I believe also helps keep me from over indulging.

Other than in a boulevardier, there is no other credible way to drink it.

A good old-fashioned is also excelllent.  However, when the bartender tells me they don't have sugar syrup, I pass.

You have any favorites?  I know I do.

Agreed. I'm just a real fan of anything with Campari in it.... got a thing for bitter cocktails.

Seriously though I have a pretty diverse cocktail palette. My only rules really are: (1) Top shelf booze only, (2) I want a drink, not a desert; and (3) I want a drink, not an omelet. No eggs. Sorry Blizz (4) I want a drink, not a wound dressing: With rare exceptions (I'm looking at you, Mary), no vodka.

What I order is dictated a lot by my mood, season, whim, pairing and the character of the event. At home chilling or grilling?  Beer in any of its beautiful varieties. Cheese course? Wine or prosecco, slightly sweet and fizzy, maybe Gewurtz or Gruner veltliner. Lazy? probably wine, probably red, because the wife almost certainly has a bottle open already. At my parents house? Rose. It's all they drink. Beach or eating on the porch? Margarita. Fancy evening or wedding? Whiskey neat or martini. Pre-dinner cocktail? Like an Italian, something red and painfully bitter. Go to when I can't think of anything else? Classic gin and tonic, but it better be good gin.

Etc., etc.

EDIT: Btw, a while back a friend served me a glass of Grand marnier, heated in a snifter. It blew my mind, literally as well as figuratively. Seriously, inhaling alcohol vapors gets you blitzed amazingly quickly.

You don't drink cocktails with vodka? That restricts quite a lot. It's the most versatile spirit because you make it taste however you want it to taste with what you add.

Not usually. Vodka doesn't really bring anything to the table. I suppose if it's infused with something, OK. But that's basically what all other, more interesting spirits are anyway: vodka infused with flavor.

Whisky? Wood-flavored vodka.
Gin? Juniper-flavored vodka.
Tequila? Agave-flavored vodka.

Etc.

When I was a younger drinker, vodka was excellent.  Chilled and/or sweetened and you could mask the burn and get very drunk quickly.  Mixologists in the 90s dropped vermouth from vodka martinis and made them taste significantly better.  Sometimes I had to order them extra dry to let the bar no vermouth but eventually sans vermouth seemed to become an industry staple.

I have nothing but fond memories of my Ketel One cosmopolitans at restaurants  where I would ask the server to sub in Cointreau for the Triple Sec.  But too often I'd get stupid drunk.  Talked to my brother about how they would hit me and he said, "You know.  The Italians say martinis are like a woman's breasts.  One isn't enough and three is too many."  Wise words.

In 2006, my brother was going to get married.  The rehearsal dinner was held at Mia Francesca's in Chicago.  After the dinner, his best friend Toby, who would later become a James Beard award winning mixologist, went out to a strip club, I think The Crazy Horse, which was right next to the legendary nightclub Crobar, with Violent_Flower and I. He scoffed when I told him I preferred vodka to gin for my martinis.  "The only thing you can taste in vodka is the drunk," he sneered.  Helluva night but that line stuck with me.  As for why I preferred vodka, gin gives me a weird buzz unlike any other liquor I've ever known.  Not terrible.  Just not as desirable.

We change.  We evolve.  So do our tastes.  I drank Knob Creek bourbon on the rocks backed with water for the first time back in '97 when I was 22.  It was strong, too strong for me.  But somewhere along the way I developed a taste for both it and single malt scotch.

As for my preferences these days, I never touch the vodka on our shelf, even though they're my hand picked choices from years ago; Belvedere and Stoli Raspberry.  Instead, I cycle through various bourbons.  They include but aren't limited to:  Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare 10 year, Henry McKenna 10 year Bottled-in-Bond, Col. Taylor, Elijah Craig Small Batch, various offerings from 4 Roses, various offerings from 1792, and Larceny.  My absolute favorites for their price are Old Grand Dad Bottled-in-Bond and Old Grand Dad 114.  OGD BiB I can get for $20-21 and OGD 114 I can get for $26.

Bottled-in-Bond is especially important to me.  You will not find a better pour for your money than a bonded bourbon.  And every conservative friend of mine who I'm able to turn onto bonded bourbon falls into my trap.  "How's them federal regulations now?"  I get to crow.

@Corribus

I'm not getting you. That's the whole point. Vodka is almost completely devoid of its own flavor but has a strong alcohol content, so with mixing you can craft anything you want without the distinct flavors of stuff like whiskey or gin. It is only a wound dressing if you drink it straight, which I agree is stupid. I'd either have a cocktail or if I'm drinking straight I'd pick a spirit with its own flavor. But to each their own.
