Heroes II Gold - music issues

Hello.

I've been trying to run Heroes II Gold for Windows (GOG) on my Mac through Wine but have had a bunch of problems with the music. For example I can't switch from midi to CD stereo audio which seems to be a known problem and a pain in the *ss to fix.

I could settle for the midi audio as I used to play with it when I played the game on dosbox before. However I seem to be having issues with that as well. When standing on wasteland terrain I get no terrain theme playing for example and I also get no particular "defeat"-sound playing when I lose a hero and so on and so forth. I vaguely remember these sounds and themes being in the dosbox version when playing midi although I read somewhere that some of these sounds are simply missing from the midi soundtrack.

Is there anyone who can confirm this or shed any light on the matter? I have googled a whole lot but can't seem to find proper answers.

I would rather not play with incomplete midi audio, lol. And playing with CD stereo audio on this version seems to be out of the question as long as I'm on Mac I'm afraid.

Hopeful for any help. Thanks in advance.

One surefire way to play with CD audio is to emulate a drive that has the earliest free drive letter assigned - usually D: or E: - and mount a disc image there before playing. You can even switch between the expansion and original CDs midgame to get the respective music, just be careful when saving/loading. Dunno what's wrong with the gog version, sorry.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately that doesn't do the trick for me. The issue with the CD stereo music seems to be related to Wine. This apparently details the same problem:

Do you know if there could be some sounds omitted from the midi audio? It doesn't feel right to have no theme playing on wasteland terrain. I don't know what the issue could be. The OGG files in the game directory play normally in a media player.

Just a hunch... But try to convert the ogg files to mp3.
