So what's recommended?

Bored to tears in my office, I played some HoMM3 on my laptop and the old flame reignited. Being too old to play competitively, I've decided to stick to games vs. AI, maybe do some coop with an old buddy of mine, and finish the campaigns, lol.

Thing is, IIRC WoG was pretty fun. So the question here is:

1. What's the most optimal HoMM3 version nowadays? is it VCMI? what I'm looking for is mostly WoG features and hi-res 16:9 support.
2. What are the recommended settings for some of the WoG additions? Obviously balance is less of a concern vs. AI, but overpowred stuff is boring. In particular, are any of the features I remember being rather fun recommended as "balanced", or at least non-gamebreaking?

a) Creature balance (stuff that reduced phoenix base growth to 1, yada yada)
b) Commanders (I loved the concept but some of it was SO BROKEN... like Tower's commander that effectively restored all mana to you after combat lol)
c) Improved commanders (took care of those silly instawin abilities and made commanders better at fighting, maybe this one is worth it?
d) Stack experience (a favorite of mine, great system and it vastly expanded the fun of keeping a small stack for a while... how "fair" is it, exactly? )

3. Are there any good AI mods? IIRC the AI wasn't particularly bad in HoMM3, but it didn't use all abilities and spells, for instance it never used berserk against players, which I always found a downer.

I'd be glad for any info or help on the matter What I'm looking for is a clean, working HoMM3 game, with some additions from WoG if possible but without those that are clearly game breaking (remember Berserker flies? )

Play ERA with the H3 HD mod (not to be confused with the ubisoft remake). ERA is highly customizable so it provides all WoG features + many more, the best part is that you can turn mods off and on, just make sure there isn't a conflict between the used mods.

I recommend Conquistador by Salamandre. It buffs the AI considerably so it actually presents a challenge, moreover you can change its settings and bonuses to adjust the difficulty level.

Thanks, sounds exactly what I'm looking for. Did anyone review the WoG additions themselves and their impact on game's "fairness" ?

Stack experience and commanders in particular.

WoG/Era is customizable a lot, so you can always set options for your personal needs .

Yes you should love ERA and likely some of its singleplayer custom maps, take the time to browse through the ERA 100+ mods thread. You can find great challenge there with different gameplay experience.

For a more 'classical' experience Hota is pretty neat too, basically more content and focus on balance.

Bad moment for your return to Homm3 orgasmic experiences, the site storing all era mods is down and no idea how to activate it, hosts tech has updated cpanel but didn't manage to update apache/httpd server. Chinese for me.

If you guys can suggest me some XL maps I can play for a while, that would be great. Just nothing too crazy with new features. I like the traditional gameplay. I have yet to decide whether commanders and stack exp work to improve that or make it worse.

btw, what happened to XXL maps? They were a thing like.. 10 years ago? I still am pissed that I lost the XXL ultima map. That thing one could play for weeks.

Guys, since I can't login, hence can't edit my posts at all, I'm gonna make another post.

I've tried ERA+HD mod and it works, but it's kinda ... laggy? like, every couple seconds there's a micro stutter.

Also, I click on a monster portrait in town sometimes and nothing happens, it's like only about 50% of its area registers clicks, other doesn't.


Aside from that, I tried the stack experience again and found it... well, how do I put it.. not exactly the best. I mean, I love the idea, but who in the right mind would give overpowered units such as Vampire Lords those ridiculous specials (Double Attack + Ignore half enemy defense) and some weaker units pretty much nothing like mind immunity? and the banner itself, +2 HP to a level 1 unit is HUGE, +2 retals is ridiculous as well for some units, damage/speed also aren't stats that should be messed with this easily.

As for commanders, while I totally love it, the Tower commander is so overpowered. Regenerates mana for the hero each round and also shoots from the beginning... Or succubi commander that can steal 20% of each neutral stack every time you fight while, say, necro commander gets the amazing bonus of being undead

Gotta re-think those settings.
