WHAT??? Galthran better than Tamika??? NO WAY!

Wait... I know why, because of the damn necromancy. I think we should redo these polls and only talk about heroes' specialties devoid of all nasty helpers (diplomacy and necromancy). That's a more accurate way of assessing a hero's real strength, because otherwise everyone will deem gunnar / kyrre / dessa specialists + necromancy / diplomacy starters as being the best heroes, which is only half true due to their starting / racial skills

About Necropolis being overpowered, I just noticed in HotA they are the only ones with two heroes starting with Slow and Haste.

never played HotA but I've heard many folks complaining about many things, so I'm not surprised

Now, to be honest Necro IS sluggish as hell early on, so I'm not totally against their heroes starting with haste, and slow doesn't impact them too much, does it?

Haste and Slow are so incredibly overpowered I don't understand why HotA haven't nerfed them yet. Are those Haste counters Slow counters Haste battles really that fun in competitive multiplayer?

if one counters the other easily on equal ground then it is a good idea to cast something else entirely, unless you have a clear advantage

you don't even need spells when you have a strong enough army and hero, against the map

anyway, that was a reiteration to phoenix4ever's competitive multiplayer question

Question is a no-brainer. STRAKER, of course.

And if you always wanted to know everything about the famous contest between Straker and Thant (and how to kick ass with Walking Dead), in which Straker needs to conquer Thant's Castle with Walking Dead and only Walking Dead, don't hesitate any longer and download the Dawn of the (Walking) Dead map here.

This is, how your day 1 event reads (playing, of course, Straker):

"You still have no clue how this could happen to you. But fact is, at the last meeting of Necromancers and Death Knights suddenly Walking Dead were the issue and all made fun of them and your special ability with them. When one of them, an arrogant Vampire named Thant, called them "Crawling Dead" and "the most useless creatures ever", that did it and, well...
You can't remember everything clearly, but you made a bet with him that you would conquer his precious town within 3 months with Walking Dead only! What you still know is, that this Thant will have an army consisting of undead creatures except Walking Dead or Zombies. "Who needs those buggers?" was his comment. "I'll beat your Crawling Dead with a few Ghost Dragons."
He may be right! You can't remember all the rules for this little contest, but just as you struggle to remember you see a Dread Knight in shiny armor arriving. Without any comment he hands you a volume as big as a tombstone and rides back.
The volume is really impressive, leatherbound with golden letters imprinted on it. "RULES FOR THE THANT-STRAKER CONTEST", you read. You turn the first page. "Rule 1: You begin with no money and resources at all. Furthermore you'll have no access to a town. You can't gain any experience. You will have the Cloak of the Undead King with Necromancy ability at basic level only..."
Disgusted you shut the book. You can't even remember the stake for this bet. Maybe a handsome sum of gold. Oh well, you'll probably be a poor Death Knight after this is over..."

or Monstrous Island (HotA) to play with Necropolis, in there heroes are waiting you. You're godlike If your skill isn't enough. I recommend four human players with against the map/AI, otherwise only Necropolis, you can beat the map/AI in a very possibility from random artifact. Yes you're brainy that what's artifact. Remember play in peace.

Nimbus is even terrible in-lore:

Quote:
Ten years after the war, Archibald was freed by a group of adventurers. He traveled to Nimbus' estate, where the apprentices informed him that their master was on Antagarich. While there, Archibald noticed the poor performance of the apprentices, concluding that "either the student or the master was a complete incompetent."[1]

Sorry for reviving (animating) my old poll, but do people still generally consider Galthran the best Necro hero, in HotA?
Or has Thant, Isra, Vidomina or someone else taken his spot?

Yes.

Galthran is one the best creature specialist in the game. His power is based on consistency, as he has a very strong start, and he can keep that level of power throughout the game.

Probably the second best hero would be Thant.

Yeah you are probably right.
I just miss Galthran a bit, I wish we could bring him back, Ranloo does'nt really cut it for me.
But yeah Galthran is probably too powerful.
You would probably have to lower attack and defense of skeletons (and warriors) to make him acceptable.

Could anyone explain me why Galtran should have been removed when Isra is still there? How is Galthran objectvely better than Isra? Was Galthran reall more overpowered than logistics, offense and defense specialists?

VS Logistics specialists, I would say definitely not and VS Offense and Armorer specialists probably not either.
He is the creature specialist that get the biggest bonusses though + Necromancy + starting with 3 stacks of skeletons, so for a creature specialist he is a bit broken.

In SoD Isra and Vidomina could easily reach 100% Necromancy and possibly Galthran could as well, which means Isra and Vidomina would perhaps not have that big of a Necromancy advantage.
In HotA Isra and Vidomina seems better, as 100% Necromancy is harder to reach.

If Galthran's attack and defense bonus was halved, he would probably be okay.
If only there was a way to do that.

I don't know their exact reasoning, but if I would need to guess, I would say the change was not done because of Galthran itself is somehow overpowered, but it's pretty much just another necro nerf, as by existing, Galthran greatly increases necro's capability and power.

Galthran is a very good hero in all stages of the game, unlike Isra and Vidomina who only really shine in the late game. Galthran also has super synergy with his specialty and necromancy -> all new "recruits" get crazy amounts of stats right in the field. When comparing other creature specialist, Galthran is the one that manages to give the biggest bonus to his creatures.

Galthran is very strong because he helps necro town where help is needed the most - in the early game. He not only starts with 3 stacks of skeletons, but also provides them with +1 speed boost. In the hands of an experienced player this +1 speed boost combined with the extra starting skeletons allows for a lot better creeping than usual. And competitive heroes 3 is all about speed running the map - break to the middle before your opponent (usually week 2-3), collect free creatures from hives, conservatories etc., get strong relic artifacts and then immediately rush your opponent and finish the game before he has time to get big army or strong artifacts.

What will happen if you pick Isra ?
Your opponent will pick a hero with better early game - faster map clearing speed, will go to the middle before you, get free creatures from creature banks, open dragon utopians and then rush your Isra week 3 before she had the time to amass enough skeletons.
In other words late game potential doenst matter if your opponent has the means to consistently finish the game faster. The only way you can pose a challenge to your opponent is if you have a faster, or at least comparable map clearing speed to his. So Offense speciality, armorer spec, necromancy and so on are all worthless if you allow you opponent to go the middle before you and then rush you with a big level/army/spell/stat advantage.
