Stephen Hawking has logged off

R.I.P., Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest theoretical physicists of our age. Bound to a crippled body since young age, survived beyond the odds of few years to reach 76, and shared his awesome studies and insights of the universe with all of us.

Although in life he was unable to solve the greatest questions he wanted answered, I hope now he has the means to be free to go after them.

And, for those faint of heart, try not to listen to his LAST WORDS. It'll blow your mind.

I take offense at Baronus' post. It seems to ooze an inquisition-inspired mindset that is unfitting, to say the least.

i was going to reply to baronus's post, but i decided not to bother; since this isn't the appropriate thread.

i have yet to see the movie based on hawking's life, and i frankly don't have much of an idea of any impact he might have made while alive, with his intellect or ideas. all i know of him, was that he was supposedly quite intelligent, and worked in theories.

Strange coincidence:

Albert Einstein was born on march 14. Steven Hawkings died on march 14.

Both Albert Einstein and Steven Hawkings died at the age of 76, Steven Hawkings about 5 weeks older than Albert Einstein.

He has had some strange and alien ideas about quantum physics, but it's without a doubt that he was one of the greatest theoretical physicist minds of our time.

He might not know. He might just be extremely confused. He might have more questions about the universe right now. But there's one thing I believe is for certain - praying won't help him at this point.

I also dislike people giving Baronus "the attitude", like he's not free to think or believe whatever he wants.

As they say, thoughts are free.

However, if they are offensive, and you decide to make them public, you WANT people to read that - and react to it. Otherwise, why make it public in the first place.

If it was otherwise, there would be no need for moderation whatsoever.

What's offensive about that? The guy simply said to pray for his soul since he died in a dire condition according to us, if anything, he offered a branch of olive, especially if you consider Dr. Hawkings' opinions on religion.

But I'm digressing, I'll admit I never payed too much attention on his works and only knew about his opinions on alien life and how it would interact with us, I always saw him more as a cultural icon of our century.

I kind of feel a bit bad now.

Something being offensive and taking offense from something are two different things. Scrutiny is important without a doubt, but if you want to be fair on that line, which is more offensive? A Christian believing that Stephen Hawkins met God and wishing him prayers, or reducing his death to a machine's log off for humor? Needless to say where I stand on that.

Personally, I read it in the context that Stephen Hawkings was an atheist as far as I know. He once even stated that God was not needed to create the universe. Baronus now matter-of-factly states that a) God exists and b) that Stephen Hawkings now knows that "truth" and his proposition that he doesn't exist has now been proven untrue.

While that may be true for believers, there are also people who don't believe in (a) God and might feel rubbed the wrong way with such a rather strong position, given Stephen Hawkings own conviction.

I decided not to respond to it or the messages calling out on that, because I didn't want to see it escalate. This topic is about paying tribute or homage to a great scientific mind who has moved beyond the veil of life. Personal opinions on whether God exists or not have preciously little space in this topic and I would prefer it if people kept it that way.

For everyone: respect the beliefs of others, even if they don't coincide with your own.

It seems you didn't understand Baronus' meaning.

Ask yourself this: why would he NEED praying for - which is what he is stressing. He NEEDS it (now that he knows god). It implies something, and I take offense at the implication.

In contrast to that, for me Panda just finds an exit line for SH, that is fittingly unique. The link is a joke on everyone following it, imo.

Yeah, the only time when I read something about was when he predicted alien contact in the next 20-30 years. Anyway, outside his scientific understanding to which I am clueless, he was the proof that even with ALL odds against you, you can still make it to the top of the top, providing that you keep looking up and never down. Also, as he multiplied his speeches on God and atheism, there is nothing wrong to digress on that matter, even less to fake taking offense.

Baronus

Praing for dead is unfiiting? Absurd. Nothig fit like prayer.
I need to explain, therefore, situations. During his life he told many stupidess about God. Did he not knew theology and should not say this. For students in theology, his speeches were funny.
Now he saw God and is very shame!
Stupidity is a very great shame especially for a scientist who believes he is very wise.
In heaven, children learn such wise things about which earth geniuses have no idea! There a reason is not broken by original sin. Children in heaven are shame for the people who things they are wise.
Now he is in purgatory and you have to help him get out of it. Help is a prayer.
You should not repeat his stupid statements about God because it hurts him. It's like you, squabbling over his foolishness.

The idea of hell and its demons is so juvinile at this point, even the Pope stays away from it to save face, something this blatantly cartoonish can not even be touchy, put aside offensive. And his intent was not to offend anway. But if you come in a R.I.P. page and imply that a scientist will be in eternal damnation for not believing in unscientific myths, it's only fair game to mock you, which is simply what happened. I'd say, the embarrassment of embracing such a conviction as a moral code would be enough for the religious.

And like I stated in my earlier reply, this topic is about a great mind that has passed on. Not the questions about God.

Let's not pursue this matter any further because none of us have the answers and it can only lead to frustration and anger.
