Disrupting Ray

What do you think of this spell?

I personally don't use it much.
I know the strategy with blinding an enemy and spamming Disrupting Ray to take it's defense down to 0, then hit with a deadly blow to prevent the hero from escaping. But this takes time and mana and could perhaps be done faster and cheaper with Implosion, Meteor Shower, Lightning Bolt, Frenzy etc.

There is also the Elementalist, Aenain adding +2 to Disrupting Ray, pretty useless special is'nt it?

It would probably be overpowered as a mass spell, but what if it had area effect like Fireball or Inferno, would that be okay?, or perhaps it's already good as it is?

Bah man, what maps do you play...? First, it is a single player spell, secondly it is used only when you need to destroy a stack like 10000 behemoths and you have 4000 archangels to hit with - thus you need the less retaliation possible, otherwise you will spend 100 hours to resurrect back, good luck with having better result with implosion or other damage spell. Moreover, it is most of the time combined with blind.

I find Disrupting Ray essential for good singleplayer maps.

Also I forgot, is used when you have a big shooter stack only but no ammo cart, thus your shoots are numbered. Make sure you kill the more, so you need to lower defense. But again, is about very big stacks only.

not sure i understand, sal. why would you not use it if you have a shooter in your army, without an ammo cart? i thought ammo carts gave unlimited ammo.

When you have unlimited shots you can always kill enemy stack using slow for example - it's cheaper.

Well I for sure don't play maps where you have 4000 Archangels or face 10000 Behemoths. But if you play maps with such crazy numbers, perhaps Disrupting Ray might even be good.
In a normal map I don't see more than 25-50 level 7's.

There are maps that are man made single player maps with high numbers. Not everyone plays random maps

Those maps with "crazy numbers" are a different kind of game, though. The map designers designed the game itself to be basically something else from the "vanilla" game that the developers released.

The vanilla version died in 2003 or so, and for ever, you won't see a single map made in that initial spirit and who reached some consensual status through the community.

From there you have both crazy attempts to make it more interesting,  in single player with epic maps - who get the largest audience, then in multiplayer with a zillion of dumb rules to restrict the game from being really fun.

Well better is using blind and frenzy. Expert Frenzy is 1 round spell but on expert fire magic it convert 200% defense skill points to attack skill.

Not if your hero has already maxed stats, where frenzy will have zero effect.

Likely, you're wrong here as creature's stats can't be maxed. However the Attack-Defense difference is capped at 400% and after that neither frenzy nor disruption ray will cause any effect.

Attack is capped, this is what I meant. Once you reached a certain attack, adding 200% or 1000% will do no extra damage at all.

Disrupting ray is a permanent effect, Frenzy isn't.

I haven't done the math, but I feel confident that mana wise it's cheaper to use disrupting ray, given your opponent can't do anything relevant against you anyway.

The ray is amazing, Imagine a scenario where enemy hero defense is 30 points higher than your attack. With blind you can go from barely scratching them to insta kill easily. Also it's simple to use and guaranteed to work.

I think the HOTA campaign proves how useful this skill can be, I cleared most of the maps using a bunch of pirates and sorceresses split over 6 stacks for quickly disrupting the enemy defence skills.

Shows how useful the spell can be over a longer battle.
