Looking back on it, the mods...

really didn't give enough QPs.

I hardly ever post here anymore, so I really don't have a dog in this fight. Indeed, I'm not sure there's a fight anymore. But I was thinking about HC recently, and from having posted in some other places over the years, the way things were done here in its heyday was kind of weird. Floodprotect and the post limit - I understand the need to cut down on spam, but should it be the default? If someone spams too much and gets on people's nerves, it makes sense to penalize and limit them. Or, if not that, at least make it easy to climb out of the "unproven new member" pit by being reasonably well-behaved - but without the need for posts that attract mods' special approval. "Good, but not good enough!" I picture the mod thinking, while stroking his or her beard, "Sweat harder, lowly member!". If QPs were less important or easier to come by, there'd probably have been less drama.

I emphasize that this shouldn't be interpreted as a complaint. I have no idea what the mods are like these days, apart from the obvious fact that they haven't banned all of us like we deserve. This is a retrospective on the system of about a decade (really? yes!) ago.

Among other news, living in California, it's annoyingly difficult to avoid spicy food. With the popularity of both Mexican and Indian food, everything's got to have jalapenos or some unfamiliar spice, or so it seems to the bland-palated Mvass. I frequently get lunch at the local Subway, and sometimes the sandwich assemblers aren't careful and accidentally put a jalapeno in my sandwich, and then . But I have very minimal spice tolerance: mild salsa is a bit hotter than I'd like. Though this puts me out of step with the fashions of "the youth", I'll be better pleased with white bread and mashed potatoes. And a QP.

Fourteen Years of HC
if being an occasional visitor counts.

Terrible post.

Spicy food is fantastic. It provides an entirely new dimension to explore. Man up and gradually build up your palete tolerance. You dont have to start off with jalapenos. I was pathetic and stupid as well, a long time ago, but now I can order Huevos Rancheros extra hot.

Unless you actually have a chemical allergy, the only reason you can't handle spice is because you're not acclimated to it. Being a Russian immigrant from Kansas doesnt make you any more spice intolerant than a native Thai person. Maybe if you werent both incorrigibly unadventurous AND proud of it, you wouldnt be so severely limited in your cullinary tastes.

Im in El Paso so 80% of the people are medium complexion and they all get off to chile peppers.

The HC mods are terrorists.

Sure, if I really wanted to, I could acclimatize myself to spice. But why? I have enough food to enjoy without it, and the process of getting used to it is quite unpleasant.

As for being a picky eater, check your privilege. You think I like having a limited palate? My family (yes, even they, immigrants) made a moderate effort to get me to expand my tastes, to some unpleasantness and little benefit. I just hate a large variety of food, to no good end, but alas, either I can't do anything about it or it's not worth the trouble.

Yes, actually, I do think you like having a narrow palete. It's a way to escape from doing something new and avoids responsibility.

Also the reason why youre terrible at making friends (having a moronical worldview doesnt do you any favors, but is secondary given how apolitical Americans are). The main culprit is your utterly humiliating negative prejudice towards anything that deviates from norms from your childhood.

And for **** sake, switch to multi-grain and stop eating food for 8-year-olds. White bread makes you crash at 2 pm.

Sure, I hate doing new stuff, but I think you have the causality backwards. Why would I want to do new stuff when it usually sucks? Of course, not always, but I've good a good sense of what I like and dislike, and almost never surprised in that regard. After years of growing up with scenes like
me: What is this?
grandma: Just try it!
me: What's in it?
grandma: Just try it!
me: Okay... *tries it* As expected, I hate it.
And not just with my family - people don't let a person with unusual tastes rest easily. I sometimes have to be quite assertive in letting them know that, yes, I know I what I like, and no thank you, I don't want to try that, and when, out of politeness or daring I try something differently, I almost always regret it.

And while we're all shaped by our childhoods, the way I currently live my life goes against some significant childhood norms (e.g. my parents pushed conscientiousness but I enjoy being lazy). No, I'm terrible at making friends because (1) there just aren't that many people in the world that I can get along well with and (2) even if I can get along well with someone, it takes a while for me to warm up to them, and until that happens it's hard for me to carry a good conversation with them one-on-one (which is why meeting them in a group with already-existing friends is best). I don't mind that much, though. I have ways to enjoy myself anyway.

But still, it's interesting that you mention childhood, because while some people have changed radically since then, I still like a lot of the things I liked then, and am generally pretty similar. I've gained some new interests, become smarter, more knowledgeable, and much more patient and emotionally resilient, but I've never become an "adult" in the stereotypical sense. Well, an increase in my interest in other people is probably one of the more significant differences. But I still like video games, McDonalds, and, generally, a life of simple pleasures. And if that hasn't changed by now, it's unlikely to any time soon.

well, this thread was fun until the last post. you're depressing, mvass. stop that.

also, if i can make friends despite the fact that i'm so different from most people, you can, too. your life is passing you by, mvass. your one and ONLY life is passing you by. if you're not trying everything you can, then you're not living life.

that said, if something tastes like it shouldn't be being ingested, then i don't eat/drink it, myself. see: hard liquor(anymore); wine(anymore), and the like. i might drink some champagne now and then, but it's fizzy and fun, so it's ok. and as long as the alcohol is masked by sugary flavors(see: island drinks like pina colada), then it's ok to drink. especially if it tastes like fruit.

also, i don't like anything spicier than jalapeno; and i only really like jalapeno for the flavor, anyway. i tried habanero ranch wings, and i hated the way the corners of my mouth were being welded together. people who like food so hot that they sweat, are straight up mental.

If I painted a bleak picture, that certainly wasn't my intent. While making friends isn't the easiest thing for me, I still have them. And overall, my life is good in many respects. My career is going reasonably well, my financial situation is good, but I don't overwork myself, I enjoy plenty of stuff at home (books, games, etc), talk to people, and so on - and I really do enjoy the food that I actually eat! See, now it sounds like I'm bragging.
Of course, on the rare occasions that something new and good-seeming comes up, I take that opportunity. But I have a good idea of what I like, have seldom been wrong, and when I deviate from my routine and habits, I almost always regret it.

Exactly. I only drink really sweet drinks, like Angry Orchard apple cider, a particularly syrupy dessert wine, and Irish cream (mixed with whole milk, normal cream, and sugar).

All good things. Metrosexual drinks are generally superior. But, limited if you dont enjoy the power of a glass of dry wine.

I want one right now. Something that will pucker my cheeks (the ones on my face).

i laughed out loud.

you've been on a roll lately, blizz. you should keep up the momentum. you must have been saving all this stuff up, and that's why you were gone. also, bring back the squirrel theme. or that frog one you never used. it's not gay if i worked on it for you, i swear.

@ mvass: do you really eat white bread, or was that just a sick joke? you should upgrade to honey-wheat, man.

as far as food goes, i'll try just about anything. the more repulsive snow i've ever ate just to try:

1. at an asian restaurant, i chewed the skin off of a chicken foot, because i thought you were supposed to. apparently, you're just supposed to dip them in soup or sauce or something, and suck on them. somehow, i think that's worse: the very worst erotic thing to do with the wrong kind of food, that i can think of. 100% pure freak foreplay, for sure. maybe it'd be ok if someone who was into chickens did it while staring at a chicken?

2. canned pig brains and eggs. like the chicken foot skin; NOT recommended. oily, and just... the WRONG flavor.

3. canned oysters. never again. never.... again. that snow was the consistency, of... well... snow.

that's all i can think of at the moment, but i'll be sure to come back and update the next time i eat something gross just to try it.

now, as far as things that people think is gross, but is actually pretty good: frog legs. i had them at an asian restaurant(different one), and they were fried and salted. goddamn good, let me tell you. alligator is also damn good(and taste a lot like frog legs). i haven't tried rattlesnake yet, but i want to.

there are some things i will never try, though; and i don't care how good everyone else thinks they are: animal testicles or chitlins. digestive tract and genitalia, are two things i DON'T eat.

except the human kind, of course(genitalia, that is. NOT their digestive tract).

We have a traditional soup with chitlins, it's the number one after-alcohol drink here, it just takes away all the hang-over like nothing else. But even here where it's very common, some people are still repulsed by it. I have a similar tendency towards eating insects, so I get it.

In a more general sense, saying you almost always turn out right when people make you try new tastes and you regret the experience is actually a self-fulfilling, circular situation. Just think of kids, kids usually have a very primitive taste in food, they dont like things with sauce, they dont like hot, they dont like mustardy stuff, they dont like mixed up ingredients... And if you take a 7 year old and instantly make him try all that, he'll go iyyyk. There is a learning curve where you get accustomed to sense new tastes, most people go through it in their early teenage years, I went through it in my late teens/early twenties, since I was a very stubborn child and I had this unshakable conviction that if something tasted bad at first try, it always will. Once you're passed that though, you also learn to adopt to new tastes faster, it's not even exactly deliberate learning, your tounge evolves into a more "open-minded" state. The prize is extremely delicious, much more sophisticated new tastes. And as Steve Jobs explained in an intervew in the 90's, after insulting Microsoft by calling it McDonalds, "it all comes down to taste."

Nice to hear from you Mvass.

I agree on your view points that it doesn't make much sense to limit well behaved members with flood protect and post limits.

But I think it should be pointed out that some mods have made manuals on how to receive qp's from them, while other parts of HC, which neither of us frequents, does give out qp's in plenty.

In that sense I guess it is more about a lack of interest in the newest heroes installment and a general lack of attempt of getting qp's from our part combined with unnecessary limits on old timers.

How old are you now, btw.? Have you reached the state where you've been a hc'er for more than half your life?

I don't like spicy food myself. It's too hot too fast for me. Besides, I get the impression that it blocks out all other tastes, getting drowned away in the spicy hotness. Furthermore, it keeps your mouth in flames for a while after consumption - not to mention "the day after".

Oh, and not QP worthy - though I am not the mod here in this city block, so it's not my decision.

Instructions on how to wipe their arses to their liking, I desire no honours from the likes of these. Their praise is hollow and the honours they bestow are rotten.

Just trying to point out that if someone really tried to, it's not that hard to get rid of the limitations, not that it by itself justifies those limitations.

I do recall it being annoying not caring enough about qp's to do something about it, yet be annoyed every time I got the flood protect (or the 20 post limit).

But I guess it could be said if I don't care enough about qp's, I don't care enough about the community for the community to care about me being annoyed, despite of good times, people I've met and overall time spend here.
