Good go Oldtimer!

Sho those lazy soccerheads! That have not life and drown in boredom!

IT's very true! The soccer fans always form trouble when their team looses... they destroy buscabines and other stuff..

I hate them!

I like almost all sports. Soccer is good. When friends asks me to play I always agree. Next cool sport is basket ball, I like it very much. Recently I plays almost all days for about 4 hours. Hokey is cool as well. We play it in school. Even though we don`t play on ice (we play on floor and we don`t wear ice-skates of course) it`s funny and we realy like it. Next sport I remember is voleyball. It`s good too.
I know, that I didn`t write about other sports I like.

You have all in soccer : tactic, technic, physic & showtime. And the most important : a real collective sport. In the national cup, why do you see big teams with stars fall against small clubs made with average players but who play together with a good tactic.

I agree with you DonGio. I play with the soccer team in my high school. Our last 2 results are 2 victories : 10-1 & 2-0. I was more happy after the 2-0 because it was a hard team & we really fought 90 minutes to win this match and taking nogoals (I play in central defence) in this match was such a satisfaction. In the other match we were extremly lucky and the other team hadn’t our level.

Personnal conclusion : big scores means nothing. My preference will allways go to a safe 1-0 or 2-0 instead of a 3-2 or 10-7.

And don’t tell me again that soocer is violent. Make the difference between players & a minority of fans. Remember that dumb people are everywhere...

football (soccer) sucks...

they are just 22 guys after a ball... where is the fun in that? ...ok, maybe playing the game is fun(?? not for me) but watching it realy bores me to death...if I had to pick a conventional sport I would pick basketball (at least it has a bit more strategy in it) ...if not, anything under the label of "x-treme sports(games)" ...I wonder how many of you guys have (tried to) climb a mountain... or something...

I hope you are trying to wind me up Wes because I didn't think someone who's posts I have followed for a while and had hitherto thought of as intelligent, could come out with so much crap. By yours and Oldtimers posts we are to understand that if you actively go to watch Football ( the real one ) then you are a thug who will smash things up when your chosen team loses. No doubt you will have seen coverage on the TV you detest so much of sporadic outbreaks of violence at major tournaments and I cannot deny this but to class the OVERWHELMING majority on hyped up sensationalised media coverage would be like me saying that all Americans who went to college tend to get guns and massacre their classmates when they get P'd off . As for just kicking the ball and chasing it , Well I shouldn't really justify this comment with a reply but Hey !! The aim of the game is to score a goal ! Not a point !! A goal!! This occurs when the ball crosses the line that is inbetween the goal posts ( you know ! the white things with the net attached to it !!) Shall I go on or do you need this bit explaining again ??

I obviously mistook you for someone with a bit of intelligence ! If you could have been bothered to read an earlier post you will have seen that I used to play but as I am now 40 years old , the old knees won't let me .You aren't capable of a discussion on this matter as you only want to insult anyone with a differing opinion to your high and mighty one. But then again it might just be the readily available drugs in your wonderful country ( No Jest )that are altering your capacity for rational thought. I've got a life thank you and don't need to be a KEYBOARD WARRIOR !

Biff: Try to ignore Wesley. You can't reason with him.

Lith: Yeah, basketball sure has more tactics than soccer... not. In b-ball, two guys who know eachother and are good at it, can score regardless of the tactics you use against them. And in basket, there are, what, two-three different line-ups? A 6-0 defense or a 4-2? There aren't that many options. In soccer, you have an almost infinite amount of tactical options to apply to your game, from a super-agressive 4-2-4 with high pressure to the ultra defensive 5-4-1 with zone defense. You can man mark individual players, you can have liberos, attacking backs, withdrawn midfielders just to mention a few.

Oldtimer: You've got to be kidding. When an american football team hit's the field for another 10 yards, almost everyone has one single task to perform, the only exceptions being the qb who might have three (uhm... what to do? A, B, or C? Urhhmm... so hard to decide) and possibly some running backs. In soccer, there are no "set plays". Anything is possible. An unconventional run or a flick of the heel can be the move that opens an otherwise foolproof defense and creates a scoring chance. If that happens in am. football, it's because the coach told the players so.

And it's a game where posession is much more fragile (this being a good thing). The only rwo ways you can win the ball in am.football, apart from yanking the ball out of someones grip, which happens very rarely, is either intercept a pass, in which case you most frequently have to throw yourself to the ground in a matter of seconds, or denying the opposing team to advance ten yards in four tries.
In soccer, the ball changes ownership much more often, and I think this makes the game more exiting. If a defender has the ball, the striker has a fair chance of tackling him, gaining control of the ball, and getting a goal. If a qb is sacked (correct term, I hope), he still keeps the ball, he just has to throw longer the next play.

And a classic that could not have occured in any other game (I think): When Nigel Clough, playing for Liverpool at the time, runs up from the behind and heads the ball out of the unsuspecting hand (not hands, in which case he would have been given a foul) of the other teams goalie preparing for a kick (think it was Coventry/West Ham or something) and scoring easily into the empty net.

And a linebacker doesn't even have to know how to hold the ball, and he can still be the best linebacker in the world! And you can hardly be the greatest soccer defender in the world if you don't know how to pass the ball.

I like american football, the crunching hits and the td runs, but it stands no chance when compared to soccer. Soccer played at it's best resembles art, while even the greatest play in am. football will still just be sports.

And to the fans issue: Which game is the greatest: The one with fans so devoted to a team and a sport that it makes a great impact on their daily lives, or the game that rich americans can entertain themselves with in the afternoon, and noone really gives a damn if their team loses?

In europe, soccer is a sort of a refuge for poor people, they use a great deal of their wages to buy season tickets, they thrive when their team is playing well, and suffer equally when it's losing. This sport engages far beyond the boundaries of active players, and men have killed themselves when their team has lost crucial matches.

"You'll never walk alone..." take a guess

Extremely bummed now, after that horrid 0-1 deficit to Tottenham... maybe I'll go start a fight, or go on a rampage, you know, like soccer fans always do when their team loses...

And yourself?

And about that incident: I remember that one, yes. I must have mixed my stories, cause I'm pretty confident that Nigel Clough scored a goal like that too, when he played for Liverpool (probably why I remember), and it was shortly after the first incident, so everybody was saying "I can't believe that happened again!"

Kind of like when that hockey guy scored a goal by placing the puck on the flat of his stick and scoring from behind the goal, and then it happened again (several times?) shortly after...
