Good one. This prompted a brief thought - I can't even begin to imagine the aftermath if national exams started to include stuff like this to confuse students. That would be a sure-fire way for another year of historically lowest rates, which if I recall we've had plenty of recently. Can't wait to see the disaster this time around, with school being over soon.

P.S: I wouldn't touch a math problem with 0 or infinity with a 10-foot pole. Bane of all existence.

Reminds me of another one:

0 ^ X = 0
X ^ 0 = 1

0 ^ 0 ?

Or better said, X ^ X, with X -> 0?

Too easy forfy

@Tsar

Good heavens no, it's ancient Greek philosophers who had that tendency. Achilles and the tortoise and the people who spent months and years of their life trying to make sense of it confused me to no end as a kid. Zeno is trolling, don't touch!

@Stevie

Back in my day, professors were not above screwing us over with tricky or anti-sos questions. Worse yet, some of the people grading the nationals were completely clueless! They had a math teacher grade history exams ffs, he had called at my cram school to ask for help.

@Maurice

When mathematicians have equations with imaginary numbers, playing around with zero seems mundane by comparison ^^

I think the Ancient Greek philosophers mostly have a "simplify it as possible as it can be simplified" approach. If you want to witness overcomplicating things on a manic level, try the 20th Century French, the deconstructionists and so on... On top of this, the translations make them additionally like an acid trip.

I always thought of deconstructionists as true scientists in the realm of philosophy.

Yes, that was a good observation. It's not that their reasoning was complex but rather the solutions. They just took it step by step.

Math is a broad subject though, did you hate all of it? I was never particularly good but I liked most parts, like algebra, statistics, derivatives or geometry. That said, I never felt much love for triangles, abstract maths or certain statistics applications.

I wasn't fond of any part of math in school, but to be fair the teachers I had didn't help with that. When I learned from a tutor it was a great improvement and it genuinely felt good when I got better at it and managed a good score on the final exam.

That said, it's still not a subject that I'd enjoy studying in depth.
