Age of Wonders: Planetfall

Fresh from PDXCon 2018 comes an announcement for the next big game from Triumph Studios.

https://www.aow-planetfall.com/

So it's basically Age of Wonders 3 in sci-fi setting. With them at the helm this ought to be a treat for TBS lovers, so I think we should keep an eye on this one.

Yep, I'm definitely excited. Hopefully Triumph delivers.

However, right now I'm looking forward to Paradox's Stellaris: Distant Stars on the 22nd of this month. I already completed my collection with the latest Apocalypse expansion and can't wait for the new story pack too to fire up a game when I get back home.

A little bit more about the game. Even though I don't like Sci-fi setting as much as fantasy setting, especially for the AoW series, I still think that Triumph know what they are doing and that this will be really good game, especially since they joined Paradox Interactive.

They have started with Dev Diaries, just like they did for AoW3.

Been a while since anyone posted here.

Anyone interested? I pre-ordered the game cus it has a bit of a promotion right now for owners of other AoW titles, and it was a 100% buy from me either way. A lot to talk regarding this game I guess, but I try to not read about it too much not to spoil the fun.

From the 6 factions, I think my favs will be Amazons (Dinos! Plus I like monster heavy factions), Kir'ko and maybe Assembly: ugly as hell but in a game that has a bit of a Cyberpunk feel (at least when looking at the stylization, music and dlc packs) cyber-zombies feel at home. And they give me Syntheths from Etherlords vibe.

Seems Triumph is even more ambitious this time around, building up upon the economic/4x element since AoW 3. They are also adding this special research trees (aside from the branching ones unique to each faction), which customize your faction even more (ex. add parasitic entities that grant various bonuses and new units). What's even more interesting is that each of those unique research trees ends up with a unique victory condition like spreading the parasitic plague or burning the whole planet etc.

I only hope that after Paradox took over Triumph it won't affect their really great attitude towards players...

I dislike preordering and the discount wasn't substantial, so I didn't but it yet. I definitely will when sometimes after it comes out though. Looks interesting. Not just a reskin of the previous AoW either.

I haven’t followed at all, considering I own and like all the previous ones, that says something about the marketing.

Yeah I know this is fuel for all those greedy milking strategies, but for one I have a lot of trust in Triumph. Also, probably not relevant, but I once blew it with Warparty and learned the hard way. Should've bought it when it was in Early Access. I waited for the release date hoping for a promo, instead the 'retail' version was 20% more expensive

Don't want to loose again, and like I said, Planetfall is day 1 purchase either way... judging by how it went with AoW 3, Season Pass is also a safe bet (3 DLC expansions were announced, and Triumph does a great job with expansions). The risk is mine to take, but I'm confident it is a good call and worth my money...

Stellaris was a great example of why preorders are a bad idea.

Everything from the prelaunch content seemed to point towards a great game and then when I tested it out I didn't even finish my first game because of how utterly boring the midgame was. Totally worth testing them out before buying.

Well, Season Passes are a risk. Far Cry 5 or Mafia 3 had weak dlc's so you could say I wasted money on them. On the other hand Forza Horizon 4 Season Pass was worth it's money when I take into account how much gameplay the game gave me.

I won't defend the preordering policy because I know how much it derailed over the years. At the end of the day it's me who risks wasting money, but I highly doubt it I will loose with this game. I can already tell how polished it is... and what's here to test? It's Age of Wonders in space, so at least 250+ hours of gameplay.

Why are you such a sucker for preorders man, you're encouraging them. The only exception I ever made was for Heroes 7, and look how that went. I played it more in beta. That's not exactly a fair comparison, but the point stands. I think refusing to preorder on principale for the bad practice it is despite the goodies and limited edition and promos etc. etc. is just the most reasonable stance to take.

He got a small discount on it and he wants to show his support for a company he likes. That is completely legitimate.

Goodies aside I simply trust Triumph. It's a conscious decision. Season Pass is usually more expensive when bought out of a set, not to mention if each dlc is bought separately.

In case of Far Cry 5 or Mafia 3 preorders I bought the games a few days before their release just to grab the "preorder bonuses". It was more about "Deluxe editions" of the said games then anything else. The only real issue here were the Season Passes: the actual dlc were simply weak. I don't regret buying the games, as both brought me a lot of entertainment, but I wouldn't buy the Season Passes if I knew their quality beforehand. It's a bit like with Kickstarter: you trust a company to deliver content, but it might turn out bad for you. No risk no fun.

And there are games like Fire Emblem:TH Collectors Edition which I need to preorder cus sometimes they are out of stock even before being released

I am completely fine with your approach to preorders Stevie. But there are companies which really profit due to preorders (I mean it allows them to deliver quality content cus more money for production), and it's only because of some greedy companies like EA that this sales model has accumulated a lot of bad PR. Or games that turned out as duds. I even remember reading an article in which a company representative reasonably explained how preorders help them deliver a better product.

PS: Why I believe AoW Planetfall will be a great game? Just look how transparent the devs are about it: multitude of gameplay streams, early access reviews and dev dairies which meticulously show of each aspect of the game. I miss out on most not too spoil the fun too much, but from the few videos I've seen the game really hits it right on so many elements.

It's a massive game and so different from AoW 3, that you cannot compare easily. Don't know what to say right now, bit stunned from the sheer massiveness.

So far the game is pretty damn fun. Didn't have as much time I would like for playing it, but I completed the first mission of Vanguard campaign and it was better then expected. The pace is good, there are many quests you can complete (so you're never bored), and most give you choices: kill enemies or try to cooparate etc. Quest form quest chains and can lead to different outcomes. Interestingly I only finished part of the quests and the mission finished. Thought that you at least needed to complete all objectives. Dialouges between the characters are a bit quirky, but have some charm to them. The whole game is kept in a bit lighthearted tone, even though it's about killing each other

On the technical side the game is gorgeous. A lot of polish went into, it brimms with character and detail. Battles are fast (take 3-5 turns at most which is good as there is a lot of fighting) and deep, but most importantly fun. Auto Combat seems to work well. Battles are all about positioning and usage of skills. They are also cutthroat, it's easy to get your unit flanked and killed. It translated well from AoW 3, but this time it seems there are more ranged attacks and abilities to choose from. Music is spot on.

There are other aspects of the game that I enjoy like customization (you can add custom weapons or modifications to your units, it feels a bit RPG-ish). The hero customization is back and once again gives you a lot of fun. You can tailor a perfect hero for you: Darth Vader like villain who summons Demons from the Void or a bug with punk outfit .

Ofc I will need to play it lots and lots more, and there is a possibility it might become repetetive at some point (for ex. technology trees are straightforward, the only real decisions are about picking the terraforming technologies based on your surroundings, but are still customizable to an extent thanks to things called Secret Technology which grant you new units and stuff). What strikes me the most is that everything feels just the right amount (from my perspective ofc). Diplomacy is clear and concrete, empire building is based on doctrines and sectors (just the right amount of micromanagment) but it doesn't feel overwhelming.

It will take time to understand the game. Things like AI, replayability, exploits, mechanisms, perfect builds still wait to be uncovered. It's hard to tell how deep the game goes at this point, but for me it has the perfect balance between economy aspects and action. So far I am very pleased with what I see and hooked. Strong GotY candidate for me and might easily give that 200+ hours of gameplay.

If they add 1-2 more factions (space dragons?), 1-2 Secret Techs and a bit more neutral units it will be perfect.

Then you're gonna love neutral factions in Planetfall. Living Plants who wage war against vegetarians, or Mad Max style mutant marauders who created their culture based on gaming culture (yes, "toxic" gamers ).
