Final Fantasy Tactics is the one I most like and maybe the game I most might have started over only to train new jobs and combinations, steal rare items, pouch monsters, get all summons, all characters, well, it's just too fluffy. Some mechanics of that game might help Heroes games as well, if one ever would dive into them.
Final Fantasy IX has a tender place in my heart. Final Fantasy X too, although in a different sense. Final Fantasy XII, just like the oddity of Heroes IV, is one I find really fun to play, which is now one that I recently bought for Steam with some, and very welcome, improvements.
I have Final Fantasy VII on Steam, but played only 2 hours (I'll probably only play the remake version of it throroughly when it's released). Even VIII I played more and, although I like them both, I'm still not really hooked on to them, mainly because their actual technology feels dead, without voices and outdated graphics.
Final Fantasy XV is the one I'm currently playing and it has its charm, nice gameplay, graphics, mechanics; some stuff I'm getting used to too, but it's still a bit of a way to get to the top. It has potential.

My "ideal" setting for an apocalyptic scenario would be:
1. Post-nuclear-war
2. Zombies (undead-style)
3. Zombies (infected-style)
4. Planet-scale natural dister(s) destroying the civilization
5. Rise of the AI
