You know what really grinds my gears?
You know what really grinds my gears?
Maps that have a hidden time limit. You're playing a map for a couple of days, are busy chaining your troops or exploring and there's an instant game over...
Maps giving you the option to choose gold or a resource as a starting bonus only to take it from you right after.
Morale.....
So tell me, what grinds your gears?

When one spends months to design and trim a map then players who don't even bother to read description and check conditions start to whine just after hours into.

What do you mean? I'm talking about maps that don't have the time limits on the victory conditions or get mentioned in the in-map text..

I would be curious to see such maps which end without being notified in conditions. Can you share the name, please?

Unleashing the Bloodthirsty was one of them, where the areas are all separated from each other, closed off, so I took the map with no rush. In all fairness there was one message, I think, that mentioned I had to hurry up but no actual deadline.
There was another one I played a while ago - and that one had absolutely no warning- but can't remember which one it was, so I'll get back to you on that.
I could have missed something, of course.

Then maybe you meant a couple of real life days, not in-game, because the time limit in Unleashing is 13 months, which is the double of time an average player needs to finish that map. The reason behind the time limits, as I also set them in half of my maps, is the instability of Heroes game once you go beyond 12th month, the risks of game freezing progressively increase.
But certainly such time limits are specified in conditions, the only exception, afaik, is Unleashing.

When people reply with that wise-ass, know-it-all attitude when their sarcasm is totally unwarranted. Such people tend to think very highly about themselves, as if they're the ****ing center of the universe lording their importance over the rest. Inevitably, such people get served majestically once in a while and get a taste of humility.

And Salamandre, yes I meant I was playing the map for a couple of real time days. Fair enough, I was taking my time, but now I understand the reason for the time limits, thank you. It has happened that my gold number became so high that it turned negative, for instance.
By the way, where can I find your maps?

Yep, at first mapmakers thought AI players needed unlimited resources to be able to recruit and move around, so for years they added events giving thousands of resources every week, but then we found that there is a limit after which an overflow will occur and game will freeze or become very unstable. Fortunately there are no maps afaik needing an average player to play more than 12 months to finish, so it should be ok.

Come on, you can't tell me that the reason I get the bell is because I'm a poor player. Many maps have optional 'sidequests', for example in Unleashed, which has a couple of areas guarded by legions of azure dragons. These maps seem to reward taking your time, building your army and exploring. Putting a time limit on that just makes it impossible to beat the map without getting all the goodies.
But that's not the point. The hidden time limit is what grinds my gears. Tell me when you're going to pull the plug and then I can prepare for it.

As I said, I know only one map doing that, Unleashing. And I just checked, the time limit is set to 504 days, which is, considering player reports over 15 years, 3 times more than what the average player can do, the record being set at 3 months. Also, this is one of the hardest maps around.

Do the average players beeline for the end? Because that's the only way I can see it done in 6 months. Why don't you try it and let me know?
This point is mute by now, so let me end saying that it is indeed a good map, which is why I'm replaying it. Props to the map designer.
