I joined around H5 beta, because once I heard they were making another one I got super excited. Obviously needed some people to share opinions with. I remember Doomforge Alci and Elvin from that ancient era for some reason above all else, although there were lots of others. Then because I hanged a lot on the forums it veered into talking about real life issues with peeps like mvass, theDeath, mytical, JJ, Corribus. I really appreaciate all the conversations from back then as they indeed broadened my mind. There used to be a thing as respectfully disagreeing with someone...

Oh I remember watching so so many hours of Starcraft 2 along with Storm-Giant and JoonasTo back in the day lol. It was fun. Can't forget Xerox sharing his sex life lol, it was shocking which made it lots of fun. Oh and there used to be Aprils fools pranks threads that were hilarious. Pretty sure I got fooled one point as well xD

Oh man it is hard to remember anymore, overall tons of good memories. A weird habit to hang around still, although it is exceedingly rare nowadays. Old habits die hard

Looks like I am the Salamandrozor here, as not only I am among the first 10 registered but also I was among the few dozens who moved from Oracle (H2) forums to HC.

A bit of history about my gaming activity (can't believe those links are still up):

Oracle rankings and first people coming and building to ToH, as it wasn't automatized at first

Registered players in ToH, by registration order (was 8th!)

First half season rankings, I was the badass (russians weren't yet in, thats why)

From all those ToH formers I am the last visiting HC. Some of them I knew closely as they came during holidays in France to have H3 hot seat games. Memories.

Woah, when I think of myself back when it was still year 2005 and when I compare myself from then to the current one, I can see how much progress I made as a human being, lol.

As Heroes Community user I was extremely inactive in the recent years. As I remember, my biggest activity was in 2005-2006 and 2009-2012. Now I mostly read the forum, sometimes when I'm in mood and want to comment something, I write a post. Like now, in example.

That is ideally much better, of course. But forums such as these have replies of various caliber thrown at you like a ball of wool. So, the choices are:
1- Inactivity or total abandonment.
2- An elitist approach, filtering out the shallow stuff and then completely ignoring it. This feels jerkish to me, since a person can be a fun buddy in the VW, yet a disaster when it comes to constructing serious or insightful arguments. I don’t see myself compartmentalizing various attitudes in various sections, that is considered especially rude in my culture.
3- Just go with the flow sometimes and not take every single post so seriously. If somebody wants to play jab-pong, fine by me. I can even treat it like an exercise. Besides, “boys will be boys.”

A lot of high caliber members choose option one and now, maybe like half the content here is alt-right crap or similar trolling. But the more people choose that, the worse it will get. I still kind of like the place, so I stay and take option three.

This thread is meant to share past memories. Discussions between members are welcome even if briefly off-topic at the condition they remain civil.

Please refer to points #1 and #6 of the Code of Conduct which states:

Quote:
1) NO insults, abuse, racism or sexism.
Insult is a remark that undermines another person. A simple way to avoid insulting people is to discuss their actions and opinions rather than their personality. For example: instead of saying who they are ("you suck" or "you are an idiot") say what you think about their opinions/actions and why ("Your post about me is wrong because I never said that heroes 4 is a bad game" or "I disagree with your opinion because centaurs have more hit points than gnolls"). This simple rephrasing strategy can resolve many conflicts and fights before they even happen, both online and in life.
Racism is any remark that associates negativity with a person or group of people based on their nationality, ethnicity, religion, race, place of origin, or skin color. Sexism is any remark that associates negativity with a person or group of people based on their gender or sexual orientation.

6) NO provocation or aggravation.
Provocation is unfriendly behavior that causes anger or resentment from others. Aggravation is causing, continuing or increasing irritation or trouble. This includes being a detriment to the peacekeeping of the forums.
Each member is solely responsible for their own conduct - no amount of provocation or aggravation from someone else will justify the action of breaking the rules. Instead of responding to a member who has offended you, alert a moderator about this situation and let them deal with it, keeping you out of trouble.

Ok, back to the thread.

Before I hijacked the Glade, most enjoyment I had was working on some half-assed mods for H3.

first of the memories that I'm most fond of, was working on a total conversion mod concept( I say concept, because no way a bunch of craplord novices with little to no skill could've made all of that stuff) for Heroes 3 using the WoG platform. The LEGENDARY Baklava also worked on it. Knight_Dougal of all things, also tried to add his two cents.
Me and Bak were mostly making static creature sprites for the most part, but it was unorganised as bleep to say the least. The basic idea of the mod was to redo all of the game (heroes, creatures etc), and ofc adding a couple of new towns, because why the bleep not. I came up with two new town concepts for it, a viking themed town(WIP title Hillfort), and a Draenei rip-off town(WIP town name Nexus), the latter branching off to become a stand-alone project, which of course flopped, but with more progress, and less flaming than the original idea that got me here, which was Pandemonium, a Diablo rip-off town, which to be completely honest with you here, still leaves me a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyways. The mod's name was Burden of Faith, and to be fair, it did had some promise, unlike many other mod concepts at the time. Like many others we've had the stats written down, and general lineups of each town. There were also some cosmetic changes, like adding little 4 line incantations to each spell(visible when you click on the spell), and some changes in game, with the easiest, which is changing hero portraits. But the most important aspects of the mod, the technical part, was unorganised as I mentioned. During the work on the mod, I've made two creatures for Stronghold, one or two for Castle, and a couple for the Nexus town. Which was pretty much it. then there was the idea of adding alternative upgrades, and that pretty much sunk the whole project, as it threw the project lead into the massive hissy fit, and during that, he deleted all of the progress made so far, except for a few more bits, namely the Nexus town assets, but that bit the dust a couple of months later.

Another fun memory I have is that of the Lizard Town. Again, conceived by novices, but this from all the flopped projects had the most progress done, I believe even some .def files were made. This one came during the initial HotA craze(remember the 3 towns they promised), so after some time, those guys decided they want to do the same thing. Besides lizard town, they also had a second undead town, and a stupidly op(in concept) "neutralipolis" town.
For them, I just made up some campaign concepts, and generally tried to steer them into direction of focusing on a single town, since no way those guys could've pulled off all three. And neither they pulled off a single one either, but, I have to give them props, they made it farther than most novice modders, myself included had. Oh yeah, LW worked on that mod. around the same time iirc, he started his Romanian town project.

(H3) The first time I was trying to make a mod, I was trying to do two things, one, make ghosts undead, let them be reanimated like any other undead creature, two, have some heroes’  specialty spells something other than useless spells, not Hypnotize but Blind for instnance. Who wants a hero starting with Hypnotize in H3? So, I was constantly asking questions about how to do it, Sal was around, he helped a great deal, there was this other guy, Jim something, he helped, too, but he was more like the ruthless ERM master fed up with noob questions: “Why do you ask this twice, read the manual, it’s there! 23x - vzt 245 hudo hado!” So one day, Sal and Jim had a beef, Sal was like “this is not just about reading the manual, Jim, I was clueless, too, take it easy.” Jim, I guess, got pissed at how stale the situation he thought was ever going to be: “Fine! You teach him then, I am gone!” The mod, I’ve been able to pull off, it is extremely flawed but still somewhere here floating in HC space.

Pff

Pff...

Noobs.

I was here in the beginning. I played H3 when it came out, around 1999-2000, as I got the disc for my birthday. Later we had internet, that I used to search for how to beat that game, ultimately falling on this forum.

I remember some members who were legendary back then. The game was going well so the forum was flourishing. Almost all of them have left now, because they were mostly here for the game. Some of you might know Xarfax, one of the best players I ever saw, yet a very rude poster, he was German IIRC.

The member I first noticed was angelito, but there was also Web, who was great with analysing game maths, some other names pop out in my mind: Tigris, Binabik, Maretti, Crusader and so many others. I tell you that back in the OSM people were posting about the World Trade Center, shocked by what had happened while I remember here  children singing "Usama Ben Laden, Lord of America" in a country that had just suffered a decade of terrorism, can’t believe the time has passed so fast. Of all that generation the one who strongly remained isn’t the one whom I expected to actually do (Salamandre). Although I know for sure that some of them still lurk, last year I remember to have seen Binabik on Creature Quest PvP for example.

There are a lot of moments that I recall to this day, hmm I shall cite an epic debate between angelito and JJ I think. It was about whether, when you play Fortress, you should aim for Water magic or Air magic. The question has still not be settled to this day, but I personally believed angelito was right, Air magic is the way to go, which doesn’t mean JJ was wrong as Haste doesn’t always pop out in the Fortress mage guild nor does Air magic that much in secondary skills’ choice. It was a bit heated and I think they are both Germans as well, I swear it’s a Germen’s world. Back in the days fortress was tough to play with and I like a lot of players had difficulties winning with it.

Xarfax’s gate on the other hand was an unproductive war, he took back what he gave to the community and it ended in explosions. It was one of the reasons I never joined, first people seemed a bit too violent for my younger self, and secondly there were a lot of east Europeans, Jews and Americans so I always felt isolated and unrepresentated (I just invented the word because I can do it). Which gave that strange feel of me knowing some guys who didn’t know me in return, and this was a reason for me being comfortable with some dudes as if I knew them for years and it was the case.

I then stopped reading around 2007 and came back a few years later, and missed most of all what happened (H6 and H7).

If I have learned something from all the posters and debates I read in here, is that -and there I shall paraphrase what the barkeeper used to say: don’t debate everything with everybody. Bash the one who doesn’t feel shame, but remain enjoyable to people around, because you can speak about things when you respect others. As an example we’ve talked a lot other Elvin outside HC, and we’ve debated about a lot topics: Strikes, God, whether the West is a civilization or not, diglossia in Greek, diglossia in Arabic, how Alcohol is actually and Arab word (Al Kuhool), Mythical’s changé of gender, cats and their role in society’s development, whether I should have killed the cat who savagely attacked me last week (to those who wondered why stray cats were killed, then this is why)... etc. And we’ve never had any need of a moderator to control our conversations.

Respect is the key, and in his post he nailed it, he asks for more consideration and care for each other, that why I recommend his post for a quality point.

All in all, I remember mostly the best moments oh HC, and can’t thank enough Valeriy for having created it.

Reading this thread makes me feel like a child, despite being here since 2011 (and some years prior as a lurker), but compared to the pillars of the community who have been here since the start, I feel like I've missed a lot.

It's not like it was fully my fault for that, I was still a literal child when the forum itself got created, and for most of my childhood I only knew of the internet as a mythical place that laid beyond my grasp (I did live through the years of dial-up after all and our phone-line was shared with our business), just like I was still a child when I first started playing Heroes III out of a bootleg CD with my brother, and boy, those are among my most cherished memories. The days spent on completely botching my economy, getting my weak armies crushed by the AI (or my brother when he felt uncharitable) and choosing heroes based on the portrait and not on their specialty (a weakness I still have, I admit). We even got hold of the Heroes Chronicles, but I didn't play the campaigns, I was still a child and I knew no English. Heroes III actually forced me to learn some English, since our bootlegged version wasn't in Italian.

So, time went on, we then lost the CD, but we bought Heroes IV and Heroes V and while the IV was a bit strange to us, to the point that my brother refused to play hotseat with me, we loved Heroes V, and bought each expansion as they came out (a bad decision in hindsight, since ToTE was standalone ), at some point we even found HIII again, and we started our hot seat games again. We also got HII in HV's collector's edition, my brother just played the campaigns and got over it, while it became my second most favourite Heroes game.

And then HVI came out, and when we saw the line-ups we held off on purchasing it, we didn't know much about how the game changed, but the way Haven was made was a major turn-off for us, so we skipped it, but in that period we also stumbled upon some videos about the Heroes towns.

In all that time we skipped Armageddon's Blade and Shadow of Death, and we saw there was a 9th town, and boy were we excited, and then... We also saw somebody made more towns, we watched the trailers for Bastion and the infamous Forge video, and we discovered there was a modding platform for HIII.
And that's how we stumbled here, my brother then lost interest, while I continued to lurk in hopes that somebody released the new towns, then in 2011, during one of the various Forge debates I decided to show my support. And boy was I bad at English back then.

Around that time I also started my own frankensteins, and so I decided to show them off, nothing too serious, except for a pretty ambitious mix between the HIII Crusader and the HII Paladin. I also saw there was a possibility to get your custom avatar, and so I tried to get at the 20 posts as soon as I could.
Admittedly, that wasn't a really good reason to continue posting, but I did, and I asked to get a really bad avatar lol.

While people flocked on socials I started posting here more often, I remember even being forced into a roleplay with meroe and some other guy, where I turned myself into an undead knight to escape torture, fun times.
And boy, probably what makes artu remember me, the zealot posting on the OSM, back when discussing religion was more common here in HC I fervently defended my Catholicism, and I had great fun in that, I also liked to show off what I discovered around my circles about alternative theories that vindicated us. It wasn't simply an exercise in apologetics, but also a fun way to improve my writing skills at the time.
Then those posts started to get more sporadic and so I had nothing to reply against, so that went away, but still I remained here, posting now and then in the VW, and then HVII came.

I was absent during the development of all the other games, but I followed HVII much more intensely, regulars here may (or not may) remember the times in which I expressed my hope for a resurgence of the franchise, as well as my posts defending the "blobbiness" of the demons. Then the first Necropolis reveal made me change banner, I started my Spider Priest persona, and that was among my most fun times in the forums, running around like a crazed prophet constantly high on drugs, citing verses from the book of Erwan and I got even to write an entire chapter of it, now lost to the ages (it was in the VW... ). I even decided to help out LizardWarrior and Galaad in their mod, but then RL came, and I couldn't do much.

And then I started posting in the Glade, my first RP was a disaster, I didn't know what to do and I got stuck on my first post after getting embarrassed for making a "short" introduction (It wasn't short, I gloated about it being long and gnomes laughed at me ), then I started joining more RPs, now, those made by NoobX eventually I forgot to post in them since I was with no directions there and I had problems making my own storyline in a way that could reach the other players, but Kip's RPs... Now those were different. Admittedly, his fixation on mercenaries did give me some troubles with some characters, but every time I've enjoyed a lot participating, the Quest for the Goblet will remain my favourite forum RPG, his follow-up chapters are also great, but with time less people are participating and that does ruin the experience a bit...

And now... I'm a bit more passive, I just jump here, make a witty post and leave for a day, I play the Tavern games, and make my updates to Kip's RPG when I feel inspired (Bloody summer and exams make me slower in that...), I miss the heated debates on something other than politics, not that I don't enjoy them, I like to present my "third side" , but it usually devolves into semantics, and arguing about semantics is a big no-no for me.

Unfortunately I couldn't interact with the pillars of the community, apart from those who still post to this day, I could see only a few of the greats of the past, I did get to have some talks with markkur, and that's among my cherished memories of this place, but I did miss out on a lot that made HC's history.

On a more happy note, I hope some more noobs come here, people may think I like to participate in witch-hunts and that's absolutely true but it's just that I like to assert my dominance as a "new" regular, and that's always done in good fun, or at least, almost (can't say I don't get aggressive when I get attacked. ).

Aren't all D&D campaigns and stuff merc stories?

Anyways, the inspiration for my latest trio of epics, mainly comes from the Arthurian Legend, most notably the bit about the Quest for the Holy Grail, and Glen Cook's Black Company series, an great, but sadly highly underrated fantasy novel series, without much mainstream recognition, aside some covens of fantasy nerds.

My descent on Forum RPs started here, with a very, very cringeworthy powergaming crapfest with me and this katsap dingus Darkcrystal, who came out as trans iirc, and also had some double account drama bullcrap, but I don't remember much about it. I then tried to make my own rp, but it flopped, as it wasn't very fleshed out at all, an gathered 0 interest. Case and point, it sucked. then it came some encouragement from Mysty along with a string of his RPs, with Galaxy Rangers being a ton of fun, and lots of Berny-Mac RPs as well. I wonder how that dude is doing now, last thing I remember he threw a fit over some stuff in my Empire's End RP, which he wanted to do plotwise without asking for consent(basically invading a plot element me and War_Overlord had fleshed out) barely escaped penalties from Omega for that one too. and then he kinda ragequit HC altogether.
I also hosted some RPs on other, very niche and small sites (one of them being a Lordi fansite of all bloody things), but that's irrelevant.

A rather fresh memory, everybody remembers Husham ofc. I kinda regretted not taking any screenshots of his epic characters, but his post that made me very, very pissed off is still saved in the Quest for the Goblet OOC thread. Looking back on it, the kid had enthusiasm, yet zero regard for any rules.
