He deleted all of his posts. Many of which had QPs. Don’t remember what exactly triggered it. Knowing him, someone probably disagreed with him.

He contributed a lot to this community, but had an unstable temper. He happened to bash people and be condescending like 10 times the most condescending of the members today. He even bashed angelito once.

IIRC, a noob came once and shared a strategy or something or asked a “noob” question, and he got rude to him, got a penalty for that. Then he insulted Valeriy or a mod, got multiple penalties at once. In response he did what Joonas told you.

Slammed the door then and some members agreed with him, like Binabik and Salamandre.

Errr, I didn't agree with THE action he did, but with the idea that more restrictions or censorship a forum uses, more risks you have that people go mad and act hastily. I suppose it is hard to have a clean forum but I never meet so many restrictions (must make x posts before every thread, can't answer 4 times in a row, can't edit > 1 yo, mass deleting from some more-than-necessary punctilious moderator + a lot of not-so-shocking words changing) anywhere outside HC and I visited a few interesting game forums, as Civ Fanatics and Titan Quest/Grim Dawn.

It was not a critic but an opinion in the context of such discussion.

I first wandered on Age of Heroes in 02/03 while searching for information about the units/spells. The H3 tactics thread naturally lead me to the forums from there. Actually was probably 02 because Iraq war thread was a thing back then. Then again, when wasn't it? I lurked around the site, mainly the temple section for some tactics(you guys really should that thread if you haven't) and scenarios(Thank you Corribus!) but I did wander in the other forums as well, there was a wealth of content worth reading.

After H5 was announced I zoomed into this site instantly and it didn't disappoint. So much information! Joined the forums after release, annoyed some mods with noobish questions(Thank you Angelito!) and did some modding stuff(Hi VokialBG!) From there I slowly but surely seeped onto other boards. Stuff worth mentioning are probably the Perfect town projects(actually completed and sent to Ubi!)
The Perfect Stronghold
The Perfect Temple (Naga town)
from where I met quite a few people but even if they were pretty epic(Baklava, War-Overlord, Alcibiades to name a few famous ones you've probably heard of) no one really made a specific impression on me except one. Daystar. My hat's off to you wherever you are. I'm sure it's fabulous. And if you ever happen to visit Finland I still have the first season of Buffy on DVD.

It was Daystar's influence that finally pulled me over to other boards for good. There I met a lot of people(Elvin, Geny) but again, it wasn't the people whom you'd think who made an impression on me. There was this feisty kid from Australia whom all the tossers(Acu, TnT_Addict) were picking on. We just clicked. He also makes sweet synth music and was the other half of the HC DOOF DUO. Go have a listen!

After I had spilled over to the other boards it was only a matter of time before I would join Glade as I was already familiar with forum RPs from other forums. Thus the love story of the century was born. I must have taken part in 90% of the RPs ran on this forums since(and that includes my four year abscence!)
M.E.G.A.
The Quest for the Armaments of God
being the most prominent ones. This is how I finally got to know people like DagothGares. What a great fella. Everyone should be more like him.

It was with him and my two other fellow heroes, Azagal and Keksimaton that we had A Magical Journey. These things are worth all your money, time, energy and more. There's nothing quite like it. If you ever get the chance, don't turn one down. I'm still bummed that in the end Carcity couldn't make it.

Speaking of meeting HCers, I also met Elvin and promptly proceeded to kick his ass(both in Heroes duels and in real life fisticuffs.) The poor guy was just far too removed from reality because of his pampered army life. He's been training for revenge since then. After six years, he's still not ready. This is one thing his epic Elvin luck can't save him from!

But goddamn it did save his life A LOT back when friday night was the time to duel. I never took part in the official tournaments but I still have a really respectable game count and win ratio. I was the hidden boss whom everyone practiced against. That gave me the honour or crushing some of the most epic dreams before anyone else. Like Radar's Armageddon Knight. You heard me right, Armageddon KNIGHT. There were some pretty sick battles had with all the fellas there. Also if Elvin had the Elvin luck there is something known as Finnish luck and I am the epitome of that. 8 SP warlocks ftw! Despite such epic unluckiness I still had a postive win-rate(pretty crushingly so as well, poor Azagal) against everyone except Elvin himself. That's pretty respectable for a "casual".

As for gaming, casual and not so casual, I was practically a live-in in the other games section with my good Mamgaeater, Adrius, Elodin and Markkur. Considering I came here with a background in StarCraft: BroodWar and Command & Conquer was my first avatar. That makes sense. I'm still an avid player of RTS games, although I've gotten slow across the years(lack of training) so I mostly play easier ones like Age of Empires Definite Edition and Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. 200 apm max in BroodWar and Command & Conquer is like trying to play golf without arms, doable, but you're hardly competitive. I enjoy the Wargame series and Hearts of Iron series as well and I'm sure if you've visited the boards you've seen my input in the Total War and Skyrim threads. And you can never forget all the RPGs, as you'd expect, I'm a sucker for those. Especially the oldskool ones.

I also frequently encountered Elodin and Markkur in the other side of the monitor with other great characters like theDeath. It was the life of HC in times when it the most needed it and the place where all the strifes would culminate into the qupting pyramids. As such it's hard to really wage it equally. On the other hand, it holds some of the best ideas and discussions this community has seen while on the other they're all buried under mountains of (always not so civil) arguments that just go around in circles for pages on end.

But not for the Tavern. That was the place to be. Page after page of threads that would make you smile, laugh and cry. Often at the same time. I want to see it return to it's former glory that it enjoyed during the Golden ages. We would have tons of fun with everyone. Games, stories, parties, 20 people messenger conversations, live follow of events(HELLOOOOOOOOO LEXAN'S EUROVISION!, Olympic Hockey games. Eugen_Cosmarul and B-E-T-A are real gentlemen btw. Never pass an opportunity to get to know them. Also Ecoris has the sweetest avatar of anyone who's ever visited HC and ever will.

The Golden ages probably lie somewhere around 03-04 and 06-08. Those are what I perceive as the most productive stages of the forum with most content worth reading. Incidentally those also coincide with the release of Heroes IV and V as well as the general trend in forum activity as a whole. Late 2000's was the highpoint of forum usage all over the net, not just here. After that everything shifted more to social media networks and nowadays reddit has effectively replaced most forums. The downside to this is that even those people that do wander into forums these days tend to have adopted the customs from those sites and are incapable/unwilling to express themselves properly.

The result is what we see all too often nowadays, short, reactionary and meaningless posts. It's not like they didn't exist before but because the structure/culture of the internet encouraged more thought out/longer contributions they were in the minority. "****posting" wasn't the norm like it is now. Thus only people who are interested in it will visit/stay. If you want more interesting people to stick to the forums the solution is simple, create more interesting content.

Here's a few examples from the past:
The Ultimate Male's Guide To Overcoming Cybergeekdom
If HC members were to suddenly drop in the Heroes world....
HC Member Videos (fantasy)

People took the initiative to make this kind of stuff on their own. Where is the last thread like this? I don't visit this regularly anymore so I don't know about the last few years but the last one I recall, is the one from Meroe just before I left:
Breakfast At HC

Who seems to be gone now as well and I don't wonder one bit why. Whenever I check this site everything outside the Heroes forums is a cesspool. In the short time I spent here this spring trying to get an RP off the ground I noticed that every non-heroes thread was filled with hate, meaningless spam or both. I remember a time when both were a punishable offence. While this is obviously the fault of the members in question this is also a failing on part of the moderation team in upholding the site rules which clearly ban this kind of behaviour. Can't complain about being understaffed when there's barely any activity at the site anymore. You're not here to play idols who live off their fans, you're not here to be liked, you're here to maintain order and be the shield that covers others from harm. Part of that means you need to stand firm in the face of adversity and pain. You don't take snow from nobody, you take snow from everybody. So no one else has to.

Why did I come here to write then? Elvin asked me to.
This is all I have time for today. That only took five hours so maybe I'll return with more in the future. There's still stories to be shared. Did you know how we have angels and gunbladers in our midst?

PS. Minion if you want to keep watching StarCraft with me and Stormy, you're always free to contact me however you are able. I'll be sure to add you to my contacts. I'm warning you though I don't really have a lot of time for it right now but I'm sure that will change someday. Me and Stormy have kept the tradition going. Also HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS Reynor made it to Group of 16 in GSL!

That bad?
I recall some fun things in the Tavern that are relatively recent, notably Fred's lie detector or How well do you know your fellow HCer threads. I myself tried something with the Who will win thread that could generate some funny replies, but sadly it looks like not so much are participating anymore.
Oh yeah, I also had an epic spam duel with Blizz in the VW and it totally rocked. After it ended we made a poll to vote the winner.

Two awful games in a row and current geopolitics doesn't help the overall mood though, but I wouldn't be so fatalist. I encourage anyone fed up with whatever to contribute to the aura of HC through their positive insights.

NB. Please do not bypass the word filter.

And boy, probably what makes artu remember me, the zealot posting on the OSM, back when discussing religion was more common here in HC I fervently defended my Catholicism, and I had great fun in that, I also liked to show off what I discovered around my circles about alternative theories that vindicated us. It wasn't simply an exercise in apologetics, but also a fun way to improve my writing skills at the time.
Then those posts started to get more sporadic and so I had nothing to reply against, so that went away, but still I remained here, posting now and then in the VW, and then HVII came.
Oh you're that guy with the many socks?

Well I'll make a short post.

I came very late to this place, when learning to navigate the H5ToE map-editor.

Even though the community was rather dead, over time I made my first effort here and created the H5 beginner's map making guide to navigate the non-friendly...editor.

iirc, one of my first responses to a post of mine regarding the H5 editor was Sal's "Why bother?" That began my "education" about how this forum worked and I will let each of you determine what that means but from my perspective, in short, instead of both sides against the middle...it is all sides against the middle.<vbg>

The first helpful person that I bumped into here was Elvin - no surprise there eh? Reason? He was a Mod at that time, making lots of baklava and living high on the hog? No, he remains a fine gentleman, though I think now, he loves to pretend he is not.

I will not venture into a list of names because there have many so many personalities I have enjoyed, one way or another and I would be sure to forget to name some of them and I do not desire to do that. I plead the "curse of the Rust-Dragon" and have to leave it at that.

Make it Great...whatever it is that you do.

Well, no promises can be made.  Things have been pretty hectic here, Val's nowhere to be seen, the mods are free to abuse their position as they please.  We need a hero to save us, but more importantly, a hero who doesn't require payment because we're broke and we're scraping the bottom to survive.

Good times, I say.

posted October 02, 2018 01:20 PM

I'm just joking, no worries.  But we haven't seen Val for a while now, I don't know what's going on.  I've been waiting for my new avatar since March, and only Val can upload them now.

10 years is a bit off, though.  Actually, it'll be 7 years this November since I've joined HC.  That's a lot of time nonetheless.

I've had my ups and downs.  High school was a breeze, best time of my life by far.  After it ended, things just started going downhill for me.  I've started studying Philosophy, but my expectations weren't met.  The studies are going alright, there's only one exam that I'll take over to the next year.  But the studies themselves aren't that big of a deal;  the biggest obstacle that arose from the fact that I had to go and live in a different city.  I've made good friends in the last three years, but now that the studies have started we've all gone separate ways.  I mean we're still friends and we still hang out, but the circumstances are such that we cannot see each other very often.  The distance is probably the biggest problem I'm facing.  Oh well, can't have it all, I guess.
And "grown man"?    I've only turned 20 this year, so formally I am an adult, yes, but I still enjoy the life of a youngster.  I still party and get drunk, perhaps more than I should...  No, definitely more than I should, but I just say "Screw it" and get wasted as soon as I get a chance.

I'll venture and say that's not the case in your life
