Well, i made the changes on vcmi code allowing now use custom .defs for especifical heroes just adding a field on json attribute image.

Why that is relevant ? Each hero in a pre-existant class can have a unique sprite, even if all other on class are categorized on female/male.

I changed my mind about creating new classes. Im gonna create new heroes with simple abilities, but interesting... and new sprites for existant heroes. (Im focusing in you Solmyr, just wait)

Arthur is a knight, from Castle. Have same attributes, same everything. But in battle the sprite is unique. I preserved same horse colours, but i can change on another ocasions.

Thats my example:

In game, all male knights have the armored knight sprite. Same for females. Just Arthur have his one.



Arthur background ? Inspired on King Arthur, but commanding undeads. Have leadership as any knight, but have necromancy too. His specialty ? Allows undead be affected by mind spells and morale.

HotA still has huge player base, much bigger than many recently released games. On the other hand nobody cares about the low quality VCMI towns that Macron makes from stolen low quality graphics from the internet.

To stay on topic, I love the idea of Knight with Necromancy. However, I think the most interesting specialty for him would be to negate undead morale penalty. Also would give some interesting possibilities in mixing troops early game. Or maybe something like permament +1 morale to his troops? Same effect.

Technically it is the same. I mean - creating new class for unique one hero is equall with creating new hero with new sprites configuration. So it is possible to create unique defs for every hero for long time, it's a matter of exiting graphics.

I think you wrong. Before was not possible overwrite the current graphics for heroes without rewriting the class for hero.

My code allows you create a json just overwriting the hero animation sprite. With no changes on all other attributes and codes.

That why I wrote that technically it's the same. From player's point of view it is not important that modder rewrote new class or patch hero's config.

Hi fiorin. Your code and mods might expand the VCMI possibilites in a really clever way.
And one thing I'd really like to see in the future are drake-heroes similar to Mutare with adequate sprites. But I suspect the sound of hoofbeat on the adventure map will somewhat break the immersion. If you ever come back to expand on your code, could you include a line that allows changing the hero's travelling sound effect?

I dont know the sound is handled, but i can try give a look.

Im gonna do a first mod attempt replacing a original hero for showing. For now i was doing my town heroes: 8/16 progress.

Its great that you managed to impove heroes customization.
As our hope, can you also look into next things:
1) for hero class:
- assigning custom flag animation for map
- assigning custom flag animation for battle
- assigning custom map sound for map moving (as asked higher)
- assigning custom catapult for battle (there is a place in code where catapult art id created in war machines slot, it will be cool to create there custom catapult)

2) for town
- assigning custom boat for shipyard (there is boat objects for map, that can be added. If their id are assigned either in building 6(20) or in faction layer, it will be cool. Imagine Ruins having custom boat.)

At really, im not focused on doin all the heroes. My idea was making the feature to allow that.

For my town i already did all 16 heroes, and im gonna do a bunch other 'neutrals' to add. The original ones im gonna do as free time to train my skills.
