music that you feel is art

there are seemingly perfect songs out there. songs that wrap you and transport you elsewhere, or maybe make you feel something that scant else does. these songs aren't just cool or unusual; everything about them flow together, and speak to you. it's as if, for a short period of time, all the different sounds, tunes, and performers were on the exact same wavelength; that they were tapped into each other to produce a masterpiece that wouldn't be anything without all of it's parts.

i came up with the idea for this thread yesterday while listening to music before work(which is something i always do). the song i was listening to at the time, was the doors' "the end". for me, this song is art, plain and simple.

put on some headphones, lie back and close your eyes, and listen. for a band that came out with so much great music, this song, imo, is their crowning achievement. for me, it transcends mere music, and becomes art.

there is other music that i feel is art, but i'm going to start off with this song. feel free to post what you consider art in the realm of music.

This is likely to turn bad - mostly because you forgot to forbid Sal, JJ and artu to post in this thread - but let's try. Since it's midnight here, high quality calm music is in order (it's art enough for me).

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Nazareth - Please Don't Judas Me (turn up the sound)

Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan

The Gathering - Souvenirs

Trecerea timpului - Gheorghe Iovu
Clipe de bucurie - Gheorghe Iovu
Calea spre lumina - Gheorghe Iovu

The 3 Iovu songs are - like I said - instrumental only, but I recommend you listen to them when you're feeling depressed and sick of everything. That's when they're the most enjoyable. Otherwise they're just relaxing and nothing more

Isn't music art by definition? What do you mean, music that you feel is art? Does your preference decide what is art and what is not? So music that you don't like is not art?

Also, what is the relevance of this thread compared to its VW counterpart? People posting music that they like to listen to, isn't that the same thing?

When it comes to music that 'transports me elswhere' there are probably a lot of picks, but right of the bat it must be Koan (ex. When the Silence is Speaking). Almost all of their work. So my pick would be Ambient & Chillout I guess. I also like folk (for ex. Wardruna, Corvus Corax, Percival) or new-age (ex. Loreena McKennitt), and actually everything that is inspired by ethnic music but with a modern twist (ex. Deep Forest). Sometimes it's a simple reconstruction, but sometimes the artist creates masterpieces (in my own sense) based on music of old. Oh, and I'm recently into Retrowave. But ofc I enjoy other genres also.

So for me I guess it's actually not about the text (although sometimes the vocals are fantastic), but about the music itself, the atmosphere of a piece.

Yeah, I have totally forgotten about Loreena McKennitt. I have purchased her "The Visit" album on casette in 2000 I believe, and 2 more CDs few years later. I'm not a big fan of her anymore, but at that time I was crazy about her songs. "The Lady of Shalott" has to be my all-time favorite song of her, but I like most of the songs on that album. Actually, I think "The Visit" is one of the best albums ANY musician has ever released. All 9 songs on that album are sheer quality, and I can't say this about any other album of any other musician out there that I've listened to... and I've listened to hundreds of then

Songs as to fill that description, to me, are songs that as you listen to it, you wish it to be exactly like that. There are many songs that I don't like it fully, like this and that I feel could be different. Sometimes just a little detail.

Some songs I find perfectly tuned are such Loreena McKennitt's "Emigration Tunes", "Kecharitomene", "Spanish Guitars and Night Plazas", Dire Straits' "On Every Street", Tribalistas' "Carnavália", and a great huge selection of classic composition, mostly of Tchaikovsky's repertoire.

My favourite Heilung piece is Hamrer Hippyer. Btw your link is broken.

You probably also know them, but I also like Corvus Corax and Faun when it comes to German folk bands.
