Kip’s Darkcloak character for example would be at least level 6 in DnD terms. In comparison a regular rogue would be 1-3 or so.

Actual DnD is 6d3 for stats so it’s -2 to +4, that’s a maximum spread of 6 out of 20 for complete beginner characters. After a few more levels, what we would consider average competent person you get -2 to +5 plus feats, skills and first gear bonus. This is where your characters seem to be bio wise. Skills can give +10 at this point. You’re getting to -2 to +18(with feat) in extreme cases. That means perfect twenty in DnD terms.

Anyways, if you want us to have divergent characters for dice rolling, bonuses like 1-4 are not meaningful enough to differentiate properly. I’d advocate you just ditch the D20 and numbers for stats completely, there’s no reason for players to know that. Just give us disabled, low, average, high, genius and roll a d4 behind the scenes for actions with gm decided difficulties. We’ll never be none the wiser and everyone has fun.

I think you are just being heavy on the theme. When I said "Davenhills are great in archery.." doesn't mean they are Legolas-like at the start of the game. It's just some flavor text and gives support to their special ability.

I've been playing Castle Ravenloft and the fighter's bio says he never lost in battle but when I use him, he still loose ok?

If you don't want to have stats then, OK. I'll give you  a secret stat.

That was made possible by stealing time! I lack the drawing resources now. When I realized I could steal the time, I immediately took my budgeting notebook and pen, drew quickly and hoala!

On the other hand, I tried the site that you gave me about making logos. I fiddled a bit and it seems that I can't change the shield with banner to a shape that I wanted.

The heraldry creation tool is based on real, historic heraldry, and it tends to keep with the established rules of it. Therefore no shapes like circles and such.

I don’t think heavy/light makes too much sense anyhow, more about finesse/momentum.

Say saber is finesse, mace is momentum. Both take strength to wield but of a different kind. Saber requires a lot of endurance due to the style it’s held at a distance and cut from the wrist, mace is very front heavy and thus harder to move, requiring a bit more general strength to be effective(but not really all that much more.) Spear wielder can be extremely weak and still extremely effective because it’s the speed that matters the most, especially for thrusts but also for other attacks. In general skill is far more important.

Strength isn’t really a damage factor for anything melee(but it is for bows! The stronger you are the heavier the bow can be.) For melee weapons it’s more of a minimum requirement. Someone with 1 strength should not be able to wield a rapier effectively while a longsword two-handed is relatively easy even for them. Yes you can technically swing faster if you’re stronger but we’re talking fractions.

But looking at the descriptions strength seems more of a general physical fitness stat and dexterity is more of a craftman type hand precision skill, like knitting, carving, sleight of hand kind of stuff. I’m sure there’s a word for that in English but it escapes me for the moment.

It's probably not worth thinking too much over.

For example, bows are very easy to shoot as long as they are weak. The heavier they are, the more strength you need and the harder they become to shoot. So hitting something should be eyesight related but shooting a certain weight(damage/range) bow would be strength related. Shooting a bow over your strength limit would come with an accuracy penalty first, range penalty second, damage penalty third and finally with a straight up limit of not being able to draw the bow at all. Just for reference, normal hunting bows are like 30-60 lbs draw and warbows are 100-200 lbs draw. So a hunter, while extremely accurate, might not be even able to draw a warbow.

Crossbows size doesn't matter at all, anyone can fire a crossbow, it's very easy and strength doesn't matter because the reloading is done with mechanical advantage. Both missile weapons, both really different mechanics.

Which is why it's way easier to just say, hey, this guy knows how to use HIS/HER weapon, why bother doubting that? If they pick up a completely new weapon from an enemy or something, then check if it's anything like the old or if he has some other way experience with it. If it's completely new, just throw him a -1 to rolls if he's a fighter/-2 if he's not and be done with it.


There's also this whole thing that setting "class weapons" kinda doesn't make sense, for example, you gave mages staves. Quarterstaff is a really, really good weapon actually because of the reach. So expect my character to whoop ass against these puny dagger fellas

In short? It's too much trouble to be worth it if you're not familiar with a variety of weapons.

I would just like to remind everyone that you don't have to actually come up with a trait by yourself, if you feel confused with the mechanics and whatnot. Bio is the most important thing here, most the rest we can get from it ourselves, if you'd prefer it this way.
