Archery and Artillery

A question that has been nagging on me for a while, does archery boost the ballista's damage?

Yeap. Also, if a hero have not only archery skill but artefacts which boost shooting damage it's add a more max damage to ballista as well.

Excellent. I had not been a fan of artillery back in the day but it's pretty handy when playing on impossible. So many ways to boost attack too.

Ballista + 1 pixie and it's possible to kill legion golems or zombies , just boring kitting for hours

and 250 hp is pretty usefull if we're need to lure some enemie troops from our main stacks. In a first week it's work especially great.

It's funny, people say that for years yet I've never actually seen a map where there's a legion of golems or zombies for a player to kill...

Unless map makers want to tunnel a player into an exploit, of course

I'm new on the game and all that, but if you're going to use artillery, there are three things that you have to keep in mind.

1 - If in campaign, only invest on a faction which has access to them, might seem obvious, but it's actually a very easy way to dumb one skill slot.
2 - Prefer might heroes to use them, look for the faction which has the highest chance of getting extra Attack parameter on level, such as Stronghold's Barbarian, Conflux's Planewalker.
3 - Further more you'll want to also pick Archery and Luck skills, in order to boost it at maximum efficiency. Alternatively you shall also look for the faction with the most shooters, so you'll have an overall better synergy, which also you should look for either Air Magic for Haste + Precision or Wate Magic Bless + Prayer + Forgetfulness or Earth Magic for Slow. The idea is to maximize your range power and make it as strong as possible. That's what is called build synergy.

Good candidates are:
1 - Stronghold. Still they have a low chance of getting luck skill, so if you find it on a level up, select it immediately over anything else, otherwise try to find on a hunt or something. Artifacts which boost archery, luck and attack parameters are your priority.
2 - Conflux Planeswalker. Same notes as above.
3 - Dungeon Overlord. Same as above, however virtually impossible to get luck on level ups, so keep that in mind.
4 - Towers Alchemist. Now, I know they don't have ballista in town, they also don't have the highest attack boost on level up, further more they've low chances of getting Artillery, very low of getting Luck and normal chances of getting Archery while other factions would have above normal, but when you consider Gremilles + Arch Mages + Titans (best ranged unit in the game) + Offensive Magic + Archery, and on top of all that you also place a ballista... It's just OP.


Note: Heroes with ballista specialty is nice, but since the specialty bonus itself is garbage, prefer either a hero with focus on archery, or on a ranged unit or on a key magic skill.

^^ I would'nt actively pursue the Luck skill for a main hero, if you want luck there are plenty of other ways to get that. Instead use the skill slot for Logistics, Earth Magic, Offense, Armorer or Wisdom or maybe Air Magic or Tactics.
The other things I pretty much agree with.

Does Homm 3 has a cap on luck value? With this skill you could easily reach 5+, which means at least 50% of your attacks will deal double damage. As I see if it doesn't have a cap, the more the merrier.

Also, you have 8 skill slots to choose from. Start with a hero which doesn't have useless wasted primary/secondary skills and you shall have enough slots to complete the build. Unless luck is capped, I don't consider increasing the chances of doubling damage as bad.

Luck is capped at 3 and it's easy to get some from artifacts or locations. I love the skill but at least some of its levels will be wasted past midgame. PS it's 4.2% chance per luck point, not 10%.

Most campaigns have war machine factories so that's not much of a concern. Alternatively you buy a ballista specialist as secondary and you'll always start with a ballista.

The ballista is not powerful enough to design your build around it plus it dies in one hit later on. The two skills I'd prioritize are logistics to speed up the creeping and earth for mass slow.

In Heroes V atleast War Machines Skill increase damage, Attack, Defense, HP of War Machines.
Ballista Perk resurrect Ballista
Triple Ballista + Archery + Flaming Arrows make Ballista machine.

Luck adds a secondary damage roll that ignores ATT/DEF.

So it's pretty good for low ATT units, pretty poor for high ATT units lead by high ATT heroes.

What's really fun is negative luck in HotA. I'm not sure how it works mechanics wise, but it seems to really screw up damage of high ATT units. And there's a bigger chance for it to happen (25% chance at -3, IIRC). It's an extremely powerful buff for Arch Devils, by the way. Even if you assume it "just" halves damage, having Arch Devils and a treasure-class -1 luck artifact is like having an extra armorer skill (25% chance for -50% = an average of 12.5% damage reduction for enemies).

I tend to avoid luck skill in non-HotA HOMM.

Oh, didn't knew that, luck would be indeed wasted.

As for Ballista skill point. I was thinking about picking it as a complementary tool for the cost of 1 skill point.
I mean, choosing Artillery if I was already planning on having a might hero, focused on ranged army which would've picked Archery anyways.
So, for 1 Skill slot they'll have an extra tool to deal more damage.

Some factions benefits more than others from it.

Not to mention in Homm V, Luck has a bigger chance.
There's an skill perk, which completely ignores the enemy defense WHILE adding extra damage.
There's a hero which gives a very powerful ballista specialty bonuses, such as Deleb.
Further more there are more attribute paramer boosts on the map AND Enlightenment gives +1 parameter per each 4,3 or 2 levels, depending on the mastery.

As a result, in Homm V is way more viable.
