Best H4 magic school?

Maybe this has been discussed before but I don't remember.

Anyways, in H3 forum them revisit the same topics again and again so why not

Anyways it is a nice break from so many modding threads :V


What do you think is the best magic school in vainilla H4?

I have heard say Order magic is too weak, but also the best due to versatility. Generate illusions is a favourite. (see also the H4 map "adventures of hamburguer boy"). Town Portal is order here and can be cast in the middle of battle (without mods) making Order the best evasive and mobility magic (though you cant ever choose town).

Chaos seems "fun" for combat, but also somewhat limited. More than half is direct damage. And when almost everything is solved with Disintegrate and Armageddon the game can get stale real fast.

Nature magic has summons, but just like Chaos magic, is seems somewhat monotematic (IE it does summons and little else). However the creatures summoned are quite varied themselves, and things such as Water Elementals provide extra spells.

Death magic is quite varied, like Order, yet the necessity that something has to die in order to be raised (wither as itself or other stuff) makes its summoning potential weaker. Powerful (in fact, imba and forbidden from competitive) with Nature and Demonology for the special spells...

And last but certainly not least, Life magic. This seems bland and vainilla until you figure out just in how many ways surviving is over half the battle, and the great many things Life magic does for you in this respect. To me, Life Magic is quite probably the most powerful of them all, because of indefinite resurrection of your heroes and sytacking of many blessings.

So my rankings:
Favourite flavor - Nature
Most powerful - Life
Most fun - Order
Most expedient (end battles faster) - Chaos
Too circumstantial - Death

And you? Which is your

the best?? Hmm... I would say Order. For me, Order and Life have the most useful spells, followed by Nature and Chaos. I only use Vampiric Touch (duh) from Death, and occasionally Aura of Fear, so Death is the least useful, and boring magic school for me.

But Order and Life have so many useful spells that I,m not even playing without these 2 schools. So, to conclude, the best school for me is Order, followed by Life, Nature, Chaos and Death... in this order

All are good, but I prefer Nature, because it is the only one that comes with the holy trinity of H4 spells

a) Summons (bringing in additional stacks, which in H4 is rather useful): check! That the summons are real (as opposed to Order) and don't need dead creatures (Death) is a plus. That there are a lot of really useful creatures to summon is another.
b) Disabling spell; Check! Sure, Wasp Swarm is inferior to SoP from Life and Confusion from Chaos - but if you don't get WS, you can still try for SoP or Confusion, Nature being smack in the middle of both.
c) First Strike spell; Check! Snake Strike - including the Mass version as a level 4 (only other school that has that is Chaos).

In addition Nature town comes with Life and Chaos guilds, which gives you a rather well-rounded range.

It really depends what other skill you combine it with.

Without other skills Death is the most powerful. Fatigue/Poison/Raise Ghost(for the Aging special) is enough to clear most mobs on the map except the undead and golems.

Chaos is in my opinion the weakest because anything it can do Nature can do better. Magic Resistance is also too common and there is no way to increase the spell damage past a certain point.

My order is Nature>Death>Order>Life>Chaos which is weird because Life is very powerful.

An interesting question would be what trio of magic schools - that is, which towns mage guild combo is best:

a) Nature/Chaos/Life
b) Life/Nature/Order
c) Order/Life/Death
d) Death/Order/Chaos
e) Chaos/Death/Nature

I cannot actually remember how powerful they felt at the time. I remember mostly favoring order and nature but the most broken combo that comes to mind was hypnotize + sacrifice the opponent's strongest stack. So broken! Hypnotize could even take control of the enemy hero which is plain ridiculous.

My list

Well it always depends on the given situation (this also include the map).

Note that this is only a list that I broadly believe is correct, but they are all very very close to one another and can interchange places even in each turn in a battle.

1. Chaos - Quick offense (great for heroes vs heroes)
2. Nature - Quick defense (great for heroes vs creatures)
3. Death - Slow but bigger offense (great for creatures vs creatures)
4. Order - Interesting combination of both offense and defense
5. Life - Slow but bigger defense (great for creatures vs heroes)

Edit:
For combinations for me the best is "Nature with Death and a bit of Chaos" because for me demonology is a skill that can greatly manipulate and damage your enemies while providing a solid "meat" shield.

This reminds me of my favourite game Sacrifice, there was similar god  of death named Charnel. Pretty good.

So, for Vanilla:

Most powerful is Order, cause of Hypnotize, Blind, Berserk and Mass Slow.
Most versatile is Nature: Defense, Terrain Movement, Speed, AntiMagic, First Strike and all those summons.
Then Death is the one for the map. Grand Master Necromancy will grant you a formidable army that can beat mostly everything.

Better Magic Guilds: Nature and Order.

My answer is based on quite long online experience (Equilibris), I cannot comment on single-player game because it is boring due to very weak AI in HOMM4.

It all depends on the map and skills of the player. On some small maps Stronghold is quite good because good melee heroes can smash easily neutrals, but this also requires a very correct game from the player (using a lot of immortality potions and the proper boosting of hero). But later if your opponent has a chance to boost his magic and tactic skills one single melee hero would be no problem.

As for magic factions: all of them are great when you reach 5 lvl spells that are simply deadly. Examples: Life - Sanctuary, Resurrection / Order - Steal All Spells (My favorite), Hypnotize / Death - Hand of Death, Mass Cancellation / Chaos - Disintegration, Cat Reflex (4th lvl) /Preserve - Summon Phoenixes, Mantises, Dragon Strength.

H4 online is a very hard tactical game and only by experience in game and advises of others you can develop your skills. I am also a chess player and I can compare these two games in the way that by one bad move you can lose the whole game. In 99% percent one final battle is decisive.

It's indeed hard to say which faction is the best. Maybe life with its fast angels, if it plays with both life and order spells.

Yeah! Spells are quite different. Notice that Vanilla has no Resurrection and Mass Cancelation is just level 4.

Order + Nature is kinda neat. Pitty the hero class (Enchanter) is just a weaker version of Archmage.

My own personal favourite has to be Chaos, though.
