VCMI and how to use it

So I got VCMI and it constanly crashes. I would highly appreciate if someone could give me a good walkthrough of how to manage it because I want to learn hot to use VCMI properly and get some new experiance through the learning process.

P.S I would also like to get ERA and get and install properly, any help in the comments related to that topic would be helpful too. Thanks in advance

Don't buy creatures via fort screen and VCMI shouldn't crash (it's known bug).

I also think that you should start by reading VCMI wiki and then ask questions.

That's a lot of literature to go through. But I think there is already a thing wrong for me. In C:Users%USERNAME%DocumentsMy Games I don't have "vcmi" but "vcpkg". Is that a nuisance or something else?
