MTG Arena

This is a Hearthstone-like Magic The Gathering variant which is free to play. It has special effects, automated card working and all the jazz.

(like the actual card game, it is somewhat pay to win. Unlike it, you can also get all the cards for free with some work/play)

I am there as NimoStar#99302, as direct challenge is a possibility - but both have to challenge eachother with their name and number.

Does anyone play? Would you like to try?

I've been playing this game for sometime now. I'm using my husband's account. Its kinda a good game. Yeah, like heartstone. It's ok so far for me. I just get bored coz its kinda inclined to standard format as of now.

Having played Duels of Planeswalkers before and trying this I find it subpar UI wise. But ofc Arena has access to many more cards and deck building options, plus the animations are way cooler.

Atm I'm sticking with Hearthstone.

Is Heartstone really better? Or it its because you have played it longer than MTG Arena?

I tried a few digital card games, but I can't get pass the tried-and-true formula of Hearthstone. The games familiarity and pacing beats any game. Ofc I'm not saying it's that much better. I belive one of its main pros is that it requires less time to invest in, meaning it's not that hard to create a "working" deck and the matches usually take around 5 minutes (well if you're not facing Warrior class that is )...

Actually a few days after writing this post MtG Arena sucked me in a bit. I still think the UI could be better and the game is much more punishing then Hearthstone (missplays, multitude of abilities/effects to take into account), but I think it will entertain me for a bit.

MTG is kind of harder than Heartstone (Maybe?). There is a lot of abilities, rulling involve and possibilities - which make me enjoy the game. It's really challenging! But with MTG Arena having starndard/limited cards, it kinda bores me a bit. Games takes longer, there are fewer things to do, turns and opponent moves are more predictable. What I hate the most with this kind of format is the instances that whomever plays succesfully the better or best card/s win. It becomes a kinda bit of a luck game. But who knows? I heard the game won't rotate the current playable cards so it might get better in the future.

Currently dabbling a bit using my husbands account. He's nearly done brewing his UR deck. He said he'll make a UG Wilderness Reclamation deck and I'm looking forward to it! I like combo decks!

@Galatea

On point

What I like about this game in particular:
- Base decks that are available from the start are pretty solid, enough to enjoy the game as is. You can easily build valid decks based on the collection you get from the get-go, and tweak them with additional packs you earn later on,
- You earn stuff even by playing with bots,
- MtG aesthetic in general, a lot of cool monsters that are valid (beasts, dragons), while in Hearthstone the strongest cards are usually cheap ones with goofy art (ofc this is an overgeneralization, but it's how I feel about this).

What I dislike about this game, but this is the issue with MtG in general:
- like Galatea mentions, I get the feeling that the game is really punishing if your unlucky with the draw. The easiest difference between this and Heartshtone is that in the latter you automatically gain a bigger mana pool each turn and can eventually play any card. In MtG you can be stuck just by not having that last x color land that you need to play sth from your hand,
- game gets overwhelming with startegic choices, and some of the UI elements aren't helpful with comprehending them (ex. pay X mana mechanic which is a chore to use). This is why Heartshtone devs do not want to expand the mechanics that much and I approve this decision,
- much slower, and ropers will have a particualry "good time" with this game

Yes! It is kind of luck when it comes to MTG Arena and MTG Standard format. This is given, like 80% luck and 20% skill? Maybe I am wrong but that's how I see it. But! Have you tried the other MTG formats? I was once a standard player but I stopped doing it coz the card rotation duration is just too fast for me. Just imagine I just finished building my deck and some of the cards I have aren't tournament legal anymore. Sooo frustrating! So I delved into the Eternal format - Vintage first, then Legacy and now I'm sitting with Modern which is I think is kind of the best format as of now. I'm talking about paper here. It is ofcourse harder since the card pool is much bigger. I just like how it works, the meta and the card pool and the decks. I think its a balanced format. And you don't really have to worry about mana pool. There are fast decks here, like for example the old time favorite BURN Deck in which you can win with just 3 mana on board. And in which you can also win in turn 3 or turn 4. And if you want slower decks there are things to do to fix mana. Its not guaranteed a 100% no mana problems ofcourse but in this format it has lower percentage. I don't think things like this would exists in MTG Arena. Well who knows? Maybe it will! Maybe they'll widen the card pool or introduce more formats. This will be great for me! Although at the back of my mind, I think they made MTG Arena to charm non-MTG players to play MTG! They would have to make it easy to play with that goal set.

As I keep saying, I like the huge amount of choices and possibilities with MTG. This is why I ditched chess and migrated to this card game . This is also a matter of preference. Gamers are individuals too with different tastes. I find this more challenging for me and more fun to play!

When you say roper do you mean deck brewer? Well that's me and I love it! I like to use rouge decks

Sorry I'm not on time with MtG formats. Modern is basically a format that enables to play older sets? Kinda like Wild in Hearthstone?

I personally like MtG for it's "big" monsters. I don't know how balance works in this game atm, but I remember it usually was: aggro races against control before the latter picks up steam. I remember this "relation" being a bit more balanced then in Hearthstone... but I could be wrong though.

I enjoy playing MtG on PC because it's simply easier to track all the variables when you have a machine to back you up. And it's less costly, the game is f2p afterall I picked up two Commander decks some time ago, but the format is a bit hard to play with two players (matches can be really one-sided). I also played Magic back in High School, still have a few decks back from that time.

I enjoy the fact that each color has its identity and it was mostly kept over the years, so it's usually green (Beasts), red (Dragons ) or green-red for me.

Roper - term used in Hearthstone: when a timer for turn is about to end a burning rope appears to press the player in order to finish his turn. Some people abuse this feature and purposely wait until the very end, even if they don't have much to on their turn. All this in order to make their opponents angry or concede (some people do not have much time to play, or hate waiting aimlessly. I usually start to browse the internet when I meet such players). And MtG Arena has a 'rope' for each phase

Oh, and the War of the Spark chronicles event is total bs. The amount of RNG in this mode beats even Hearthstone: some Planeswalkers are totaly useless and some like Nissa or Ugin straight up win you games. Ofc it all comes down to the fact that either one of you can pull a totally OP random minion via Factory of Momir Vig...

EDIT: Somehow I managed to win 15 matches in WotS chapter 1. The second one is Pauper. I thought it will be hard due to a limited pool of common cards, but I got 15 wins fairly easy taking turns in playing g-w token & b-r aggro decks. I enjoyed it.

Went a bit overboard and crafted a few Lazotep cards to create a black-red-blue Amass deck, but it's pretty fun actully.

Shame you cannot "disenchant" cards though, I'm already getting quite a few rare duplicates of cards I don't want, sigh...

Ok, I somehow forgot about this thread. Well if you like big creatures then Heartstone has it better than MTG! As for the thing you mentioned about each color in MTG has their own identity, you might want to retract that statement. Check out the Planar Chaos expansion where the Wrath of God is black and a red Elvish Spirit guide exist .

What is the War of the Spark event? I haven't checked it.

I'm still using my husband's UR deck. It's kinda a bit grindy to play (which bores me most of the time) but it's still mixed with enjoyment! Learning new cards, although not that awesomely powerful, and playing the mechanics of MTG!

Wasn't Planar Chaos a blunder? Even WotC designers stated it? No, they do keep to their color identities (but they also liek to mix colors for some new effects ). It's less experimentation then in Hearthstone where some classes are better in something that should be other class characteristic trait, for example when Druid had better Armor related cards then Warrior.

It's a mode like Arena in Hearthstone (somewhat). Custom rules, and you get prizes for completing it (gold and alternative art for Planeswalker cards in this case). Plus there is a story element added to it (based on WotS book). Imo this mode is more developed and rewarding then its Hearthstone counterpart.

Good for you. I have copies of Rare cards I mostly don't play...

EDIT: Their philosophy about not being able to dust off cards needs to change. Not wanting players to "regret dusting some cards later on" is a poor excuse for a greedy game economy. If this will stay, I won't be playing this game in the long run because I'm already sick and tired of getting 3 copies of a Rare Planeswalker card in a game where there are 250 cards each expansion...

What do you guys think of the Set Mastery system? Quite a lot of rewards for 20 euros/3400 gems, which isn't that much when we're talking MtG. Plus you actually get 2000 gems back in prizes. And it works retroactively. But at the same time it's pretty restricting with the fact you can only progress it with dailies and that it ends when new set arrives...

Yeah I decided to buy it, I don't plan on spending much money on MTG as it can take everything you have and then some But this seemed like a good deal, and every level-up now gives you a reward which by itself is... rewarding hehe.

Oh and I just now opened Cavalier of Gales (oh yes Mythich Rare)

The deal is good. I'm only afraid of the "ends with the release of new set" part. I'll need to check how fast the progress goes. I play the game daily though. Good thing is you can buy it retroactively at any point. I think one of the strongest "deals" with this pass is that it gives you a lot of Mythic Rare wildcards. Instead of risking getting s*it in packs (I'm looking at you Hearthstone) you actually can craft what you want

I will wait until August-September. At that point I will probably have a good understanding of how the XP progress goes.

I think it is worth it, even if you'll not get 100%. But I would be very disappointed if I didn't manage to "max out" the progress bar. But fret not. Supposedly there will be more codes that grant you bonus levels (if you dont know, write LevelUp in the 'Redeem Code' input field in the top-right corner of the Shop), and they mentioned something about Events that will grant you bonus XP. I also think that players will cry about it, so they might extend the time to finish the progress bar...

PS: Just to be on the safe side Minion, you do know there are codes that grant you freebies? I'll link it just to be on the safe side
