Is this the beginning of the end?

My son and I have been Heroes addicts for the last 6 years or so. We eagerly awaited the coming of heroes 4 and when it did become available we could not get the cd case open fast enough.
At first we were alittle disapointed that some of the graphics like the towns were not that great and the sideways
combat screens were difficult to get organised. What we did notice was that we would get 2 or 3 weeks into our games and loose interest, save it and try starting a new game .
I don't think this is going to be a classic like 1,2 and 3
rather I look to perhaps the patch will make it fun enough just to play. I feel ripped off paying for a whole game and getting less than half...

same history and expectations

I have to agree, I was the same with my anticipation.  Games have not "grabbed" me like all previous versions of heroes.  I never did multi-player online until h3. but have been a fan since kings bounty.

I have continued playing, there are some things that concern me while playing the campaigns.  once you get a hero well built (mebe 3ed map in a campaign) It is almost useless to built troops in the castles. I have used the troops only in the final fight for the lvl mebe.  when a solo hero (not even using magic or immunity potions) can take out 25+ black dragons, It would seem there are going to be crazy balance problems.

I think the only problems that will be addressed in a patch will only apply to issues like the memory leak and other small things. gameplay i would think will not get any major changes.  of course the multi-player is what is wanted and needed the most.

I for one will keep learning the game and hope to get more entranced by it.

Kaler I feel the same way.

6 yrs and now this?

I have been playing heroes online for 6 yrs and have even met many of the players I played with and now this game is garbage.

I play it everyday and try to like it but it's a chore.

The whole design is flawed.

Now the strategy is all based on getting unstoppable battlefield combos and all the strategies we advanced over the years have been taken out.

It's very sad as heroes filled a nieche that no other game does.

I have been seaching every new game to hit and the shelves in search of something to fill the void left by heroes and all have failed.

AoW2 and Disciples2 don't even come close.

So we all meet on the zone and play heroes3...and I even re-installed heroes2.

As much as we may want to be hopeful there are fundamental flaws in the design and in time all will reallize this game is a lost cause.

Hope to see you on the zone.

you can't judge the act of sex by the act of jerking off..
sure game has major flaws but is more balanced than III(if you rule out necromancy) which means with a decent patch MPlaying gonna be suprisingly enjoyable and challenging...
We got no DD and no Portal anymore...those two looked more like cheat codes than game elements to me..

This game is best to play it very slowly.  Dont rush into this thinking it will be like heroes I, II or even III.

Heroes IV is practically a whole new ball game.  I am playing the campaign with Emilia and i am playing this cautiously so i can find out how order works in a game with different creatures, skills and spells.

The more i play it, the more i found out more about order and i still have the rest to find out eg death, nature, might etc.

I rushed into heroes III and eventually got bored with it before i realised the mulitplayer side of it.

I am sure in time with a new patch for multiplayer and other fixes like grid map the popularity Heroes IV will increase.

Patience is a very important factor in gamplay

I didn't rush it.
I've played the campaigns on expert lvl one by one - a whole month.
Now my head is full of information for the game.
And I must say. I am dissapointed, I lost interest and once I have all the information I got bored.
Such an addict as me. Still have KB on the comp, I love to fly with the Dragons
There is no addiction and challange in this game.
The concept is stupid and the graphics is ..... confusing.

I cannot beleive the same guys made the previous series.
Also 3DO - take off the market MM9 now! It is an insult to all the image of the series.

Well, 3DO did say in their commercial, "Its a whole new game"
It is new, much different from H3. And i like it. Its a greater challenge now, i mean against human opponents. With a few patches the tournament of honor will be great.
Dont judge the game yet, 3DO did release it to soon. Now, give them time to fix the bugs.

You won't see me jumping the boat to defend 3d0.  I don't think what they did to H4 is bad, but there's just too many problems with the game for me to enjoy it.  I'm not going to give them a "chance," as far as I'm concerned I'm done with heroes.  Until they prove otherwise, and I see feedback indicating so from people i can respect, there's just not much interest for me in the game.

It's a good thing AoW2 is just around the corner...

My point of view is simply if you like H4, and could see yourself playing MP like you did in H3, as H4 is right this very second, with nothing patched besides MP functionality, then I probably don't agree with your opinion.  You're perfectly entitled to it however, and I am not arguing over that here

I think its interesting that people feel that H4 has less to offer in terms of strategy.  Some people in other posts felt it was dumbed down for new players.  I feel just the opposite.  Sure, it is a different game, but does that mean that it is inferior to H3.  I realize their are players out there that dominated in H3 because they knew the best way to chain, and how to manipulate the maps.  H4 they will now have to develop new strategies, but this should still favor the strong players in the long run.  All I'm saying is give it a chance until they have a chance to patch the bugs, and multi-player. I admit that 3do made a mistake in releasing the game before it was ready.  It is nothing new to us gamers! Happens all the time.  Does'nt mean its right, but I am willing to give them an opportunity to fix the AI.  I look forward to playing H4 multi-player against the best players.  I know they reside on this site.  I hope to meet you all in the future. Be patient!

Well, I just uninstalled the game today. Not because I don't like Heroes 4, it's exactly the opposite. I like Heroes4 alot and have spent far too much time playing it.

Uninstalling the game is the only way to prevent me from playing the game during the study week and the final exam week. If I can't resist reinstalling the game, I might have to give te CDs away or destroy them.

If I had never played heroes 1-3 or I had played them but never sought to try to achieve the level of master play exemplified by Frank, Antal, etc. then I would like Heroes4 on it's own merits I believe.

But as those were my personal goals and I do not see this new game being much of a challenge strategically I am very saddened.

I am not saying "I am some great player" or anything like that. I am just saying that this very advanced aspect is what I always enjoyed and strived for.

I know everyone that post here thinks they are very good and all but unless you played in ToH and beat the likes of Rychen, Moto, Andi etc then I am a lil skeptical about how skillful you really were at the previous games.

And I believe there is a direct link between the complaints of this game and the lack of true strategies mentioned by the players who excelled at Heroes1-3.

How can you say that there is no strategy!? The game is different, so you will have to develop a different strategy to win.  Is change so bad?  We hav'nt even had a chance to try it out on-line multi player and people are saying their is less strategy. I think this game will be great multi-player.  I am interested in knowing why top players feel there is less strategy in this game?  Is it because you cannot employ the same strategies to win?  Heroes III was a great game, but has anyone came up with any new strategies lately?  Are the Top players saying that their is still a lot to be discovered with Heroes III?  I may be in the minority, but I feel that Heroes IV will bring new challenges, more strategy, and a good time to be had by all, as we develop a new winning formula.

I was not a top player in ToH, but hope I know smth about H3 strategies.
I want to focus on the following issue - combat in the game.
It is believed that despite of many problems combat was improved greatly in H4.

I don't agree with this fact.
As u remember (or some of u may be) there was a tourny in season 3 called "Tacticians corner". I think it was the best tournament ever hold in ToH (unfortunately, it was not finished).
Those who were really involved in it could realize the variety of combat strategies in H3.
It was great!
The best thing was that the luck factor was minimized.
The bettles were dynamic, thrilling and exciting.

And what we have now in H4?
Such advantages as larger combat field, nore realistic creatures and simultanious attacks didn't make the combat better.
In exchange it became slower and even boring.

I realize that combat is only one side of the whole game, but it is it's core.

I was dissapointed by this much more than with the bugs that were already disscused many times because this bugs can be fixed (I hope it will happen earlier or later), but it's not realistic to make changes in combat (except grid).

So, my choice is H3 (hope to change it in the future).

I agree with scarecrow

There are many strategies and tactics that have essentially been nullified with h4.  But that does not mean that there is no strategy.  In fact there are so much we need to discover, like scarecrow mentioned, and it will only come to surface with multiplayer online.

the strategy of a multi-player heroes game is dependant on the map played.  For single player the AI sucks, so there's no strategy there.

Heroes4 CD maps suck.  They have no real strategy.  By creating better / new maps, there is potential for Heroes4 ... that is ... if there is a patch.

I believe we are seeing either the beginning of the end, or perhaps NWO may yet get the support they need to create a patch or three.

My recommendation: don't buy the game, pirate it, then send that money ($40) to NWO.  NOT 3do!

Why?
If 3do will no longer support NWO in creating patches they promised, then I will no longer give 3do my money.
