Like so many others pointed out it depends on the map and faction.
However my general rule of thumb is that I rather take a gold hero over a resource hero unless I suspect there will be a trading post on the map.

Yeah estates or gold means dwellings or statue of legion, for example. Player needs more income. Easy question. IDK about resources, but player buys artifact or creature in the future. Yes axiom. My opinion that resource means player needs to build his castle/town. Ok which/what I choose a estates, gold or resources. A very hard question, because of estates means scout. A gold or resource can use a leader/main hero. So I take a gold or resource. Even if I use a scout them. Leader could do better.

I rarely pick gold or resource heroes to begin with. But if those were my only two options I'd have to pick a gold hero. The added cash in early game would be nice. But like many people above me have said, it all depends on faction, map, and play style.
Plus I have never played as Lord Haart before, or with Estates in general, but, I always saw Estates as a more valuable secondary hero skill than a starting one.

Yes. When you think Gems for Archangels. But from 5000 to 1667 in a marketplace or trading post. So Leena has been able to buy Gems, and gold still stayed to Leena. If marketplace sells 5000 continually. Then 2nd the best Leena. If I remember right, expert Eastes gives 1000 gold. Archangel needs 3 Gems. Depend on status.

Why wouldn't Lord Haart be the best? Leena might be a bit better early, but she might easily be outclassed by Haart likely after first week even. Leena might learn exp. estates at lvl as late as lvl 5, and at that point, the gold gained from Haart's speciality is nearly the same and only growing, whereas Leena is unable to become better in that regard.
If the game lasts like more than 3 weeks or so, there's no question who's better moneywise. If you're playing a short map on impossibke, then Leena is clearly better, thou.

But Leena makes 600 gold from day 1, Lord Haart only makes 262. You need to level Lord Haart some and get Advanced or Expert Estates to catch up with Leena and unless you decided to main Lord Haart, he likely won't get that many levels.

grindan is the best resource hero hands down
just for the resource itself then leena i guess haart speciality is too much of a meme even tho its pretty good in stuff like mirror templates but grindan is still generally what gives the most value if u think outside the box
most +350 gold heroes are pretty good tbh aine is good for spell distribution caitlin is a good mage

Haart is pretty clearly the best, although Leena is a close second. Leena can give you a total +1350 gold by level 4, which is more than Haart but Haart can surpass that pretty quickly if you clear out a few early fights with him and invest some chest into his XP instead of taking the immediate gold.

To think more of it, I would say Leena is pretty ideal hero to gain gold passively. However, if player would want anything else from a "resource hero", then Leena is not an ideal pick.
- Aine comes with scholar, one the better skills for non-main heroes.
- Damacon is kinda insane hero when you think about it, great from taking fights even early on, and can also be used as main.
- Grindan is also insane, usually one the better mains one can have.
- Jenova is not as good as Damacon, but still really for doing fights. Can also be used as main, if noone better shows up.
- Clavius and Octavia both have basic offence, making them bit better for early fighting.
- Thunar and Erdamon come with Tactics, making them able to do fights other heroes simply cannot.
My point is, Leena would likely be the best hero resource-wise, if the game was mostly about pressing the "End turn" button. However, there are heroes that have capabilites of outplaying Leena aka having more tempo than her and allowing their armies to have more stuff faster, that may be even worth more in gold that Leena is able to produce. Therefore, it isn't as clear if the ability of gaining a bit more gold than other money heroes is the most desirable option.

Well I was mostly talking about the resource aspect and here Leena makes the most gold from the start of all heroes.
And when starting a map, if playing Cove, you could just pick Leena and find a better main in tavern later. Especially at Impossible those 600 extra gold per day, could be a gamechanger. Jeremy comes with a cannon, which is +4000 gold and Elmore comes with Advanced Navigation and specialty, which means he can pick up all the free stuff in the ocean before anyone else. HotA Crew spoiled Cove a bit...

not sure, yeah cove has good heroes but theyre still considered to be worse in general than dungeon necro conflux rampart castle
i agree with hourglass here!! all those heroes are useful, leena can also come in handy with pathfinding and hero chaining which is nice, it's rare that you actually care more about the resource aspect (compared to what utility the hero brings in general) outside of very poor maps or mp mirror matches from my experience
picking leena first would probably be kinda bad if no heroes are banned prior to starting, the advantage from starting an army hero like cassio derek or anabel is too good to miss out on considering they are very potent main heroes as well, you need the early game advantage to start snowballing otherwise the resource aspect won't matter!! the army's potential to clear guards will grant you more winning % in the long run as you get resources by clearing random guards as well
no experience with water maps tho so idk about elmore
