Newbie with HOMM1 questions....

I bought the Heroes of Might and Magic series the other day and today was the first chance I have had to actually devote some serious time to the first one (HOMM1). I am still at the beginning and it's very intriguing, I think I have the game mechanics down but when I get to that fight with the gargoyles north of the starting castle, I keep having my butt handed to me (i.e. I lose that battle each time I have tried). I have explored a few strategies but have had minimal success. Can anyone offer a bit of advice to help me past this part of the game? Thanks so much!

Without actually mentioning a map, it's hard to provide good feedback .

But generally speaking, if a fight is too hard at some point, just leave it be for a while, while you're accumulating a bigger army. Get back to it somewhat later and kill them then.

Newbie with HOMM1 questions.....

First, thanks so much for replying to my initial question. I am sorry about not providing a map description or other identifying information. I am talking about the first campaign map in the first Heroes of Might and Magic game. The combat I am referring to is just north of the first castle in the game. The combat consists of 5 or 6 flying creatures that look like gargoyles. They have been tearing through my army before I can inflict any damage on them. But I will take your advice and explore the map a bit before trying again. I am a little ashamed to be having such of a time with one of the first battles I have come across in this game.

It's just your first step in a much larger world - and you're welcome to it!

Hopefully, you'll feel that same fever that most of us here have and simply have to keep playing the game, regardless of which version of the game you're interested in most!

In terms of challenge/difficulty, how would you game vets out there compare the original HOMM to later games, particularly II and III?

My recollection (it's been a while since I played the original) is that while it may be less sophisticated in many ways than later entries in the series, it's by no means easy to beat.

There is a huge difference in strength between factions. Wizards are the strongest (by far), Knights are the weakest. Playing Wizards the first map can be won on week 1 day 2 (with some luck).

However, the campaign includes a map where you are overrun by barbarians, which is very hard to win. If you pick barbarians yourself, you don't have to face it. Therefore the barbarian campaign is easiest.

HoMM 1 map editor

Hello, people who still play HoMM1 !!! (What? Such people exist )

I had never actually played the first Heroes game until earlier this week (got it from GOG.com), but I've collided with the game on several occasions (mostly plot-related searches, but I've also watched some LP of a few maps). I have to tell you, the HoMM is one of the...

"Alright, let's get to the point already!" you grumpily shout. "You wouldn't have necroed a thread about this forgotten game just because you felt like telling us how good it really is. That we already know! You must have some sort of technical issues with it! Why don't you contact GOG and be done with it!"

You got me there.

Once the game instalation had finished, I noticed that a certain very important shortcut was missing. The map editor. I didn't think much of it at first. I thought to myself: "Eh, I'll look through the game files and manually create a shortcut later".

But my curiosity soared as I went through the rather small list of single player maps. I scoured the Net, but I found only a handfull of custom ones. Even the venerable "maps4heroes" lacked a HoMM1 section! Desperate, I read the Wikipedia page. "Random map generator.... Map editor... Windows 95 edition only...". Cold sweat ran down my cheeks. Did my copy even come with that most yearned after utility tool? The one and only Map Editor, without which no entry in the series is just an empty husk? I could swear that the few times I had fired the game, a DOSBox menu appeared...

Nervously, I opened my HoMM folder and there it was! THE EDITOR! Thank goodness!

Every true Heroes fan knows that urge... that uncontrollable desire... to create maps! Like an alcoholic, he resorts back to it every evening, only to wake up late with a headache. But my dream, alas, evades me so far.

“The program can’t start because WING32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem”

Snow.

"Help, me Google! I'll be a good boy and turn AdBlocker off, just let me make some maps!"

After selling my soul to this New Age demon, I found this interesting piece of information. I followed the complex instructions with a focused mind.

"I cannot afford to make another misstep!" I thought. Nevertheless, improvisation was required and I found out that putting the WING32.dll in my game folder itself returned an error. So I confidently ran the EDITOR... The system itself paused for a while in disbelief that I had come this far, trying to think up an excuse to prevent me from doing what a real man should do, from making maps...

System, you betrayed me yet again!

Failed, I had. Into exile I should have gone.

HC, you are my last hope! (Well, maybe GOG, too, but I reckoned they were too preoccupied with Cyberpunk 2077 to even bother with a game, which has an active playerbase of 4 people)

Also, there used to be a time when I was nuts on M&M lore and perhaps the only thing I recall from my "rezerch" is a perfectly voiced reading of "Leters from Lord Ironfist" on YouTube. In the last few months I have been frantically looking for it, but to no avail... If one of you good sirs happens to know where I might find it, please, share that information with me, the ignorant and stupid Count...

To top off this unnecessarily long post, I modestly propose the mods to sticky this HoMM thread or another and to have all clueless rascals, who are unaware that we live in the 21st century and are still playing Heroes 1, post their dumb complaints in there since the game is so niche, even by HC standarts, that a seperate thread for every problem is hardly warranted and receives 6 replies at most.

TL;DR for those busy hotshots that have ADHD and didn't bother to read my heartfelt post:

1.How the heck do I run the Map Editor (GOG copy, the EDITOR is in my save files, couldn't run it at first- "No WING32.dll, try reinstalling the app"; after installing the .dll in both my system32 and syswow64, the EDITOR flips me off: "No HoMM CD-ROM, kill yourself!");
2.Requested link to an expressionate read of "Letters from Lord Ironfist" (the OG lore drop from the manual);
3.Proposal for pinned HoMM1 general thread for complaints and questions to avoid thousands of mini-threads with 2 replies;

Thank you for your attention. Now I'll frick off to the Volcanic Wastelands, never to be seen again in these parts in the next 30 years.

And yes, I forgot to scale down those screenshots. No, I won't bother to scale them down today. Yes, I play a 50x50 res game on a full HD screen. Got a problem?

EDIT: Guess I did scale down the images today! Huh...

Sincerely,
The Count

In fact - clasic tl;dr because solution is widely known. You must copy one single file to your HoMM folder. A wrapper.

Nope... Still insists on inserting the unexisting CD. Everything is fine with the game itself (no pop-up when I try to run it), but the EDITOR won't start.

EDIT: My OS is Windows 10, apparently it works fine on 7?

EDIT2: Tried running it through DOSBox, says "This file cannot be run through DOSBox".

EDIT3: Well, sorry to have bothered you and thanks for the feedback, I had no idea of the graphic wrapper's existence. That'll hopefully allow me to play Heroes Chronicles with better resolution.

Anyway, I should probably just contact GOG support (and wait for a millennium before they fix the problem). You guys aren't my personal tech support after all

Though if anybody knows how to fool the executable into thinking the CD exists, please, share your wisdom (or anything, really, that might help me run the damn EDITOR).

BTW, I'm definitely not giving up on my hunt for that video. @Verriker, do you happen to know anything?

So even our Great Loremaster Verriker couldn't find anything else, huh? Yes... I remember now! These are the videos! It seems as though my waning memory had given them too much credit... Still! You have my gratitude!

compared to the many sequels HoMM1 maps are pretty well designed. There is not really a need for a map editor, unless you have played the game for years
