Avengers Endgame Discussion

Spoilers are within.

---

Well, I definitely will want to watch it again at some point.

Having watched the movie I'll say this: it didn't really feel like a comic book movie, not that there's anything wrong with that. There were so many characters to wrap up into some sort of conclusion and they did that pretty successfully. I can't help be feel that the story was a little bit too entangled for its own good but maybe with my 2nd viewing I won't feel that way. I felt somewhat empty at the end of the movie because in many ways it truly is a "goodbye". Overall, as good of a conclusion as I could hope for. If you do think a little bit about it, it does feel kind of lame that basically: all that ever needed to happen was for Dr Strange to sit down with his magic green rock , browse for favorable outcomes, and click the correct option.  But... meh.

There was a crapload going on and it almost felt like a documentary sometimes. The stage has been set for the newer characters to fill the void of previous ones who are either gone for good or will be supporting characters.

It will take at least several years for Marvel to build itself up to another set of movies on proportion with Infinity War and Endgame, assuming they ever pull it off as successfully. Par to the formula, I'm assuming the next big bad will be bigger and badder and probably more cosmic.

I agree with you on the Dr. Strange thing, with the Timestone. I actually already considered that plottwist during the Infinity War movie.

Also I thought Captain Marvel's appearance was somewhat weird. She has no effort to bring down that battleship in the end, but to defeat that army seemed an almost insurmountable task?

Oh, and let's not forget the moment Spiderman held the glove and suddenly all those female superheroes popped up around him to help him clear the way towards the van.

I had expected about half of the superheroes to die. In the end, though, only 3 of them are really out of the picture for good and the rest is still out and about to re-appear in other movies. I really liked Captain America's conclusion, by the way; I thought it fit really well.

Somebody needs to tell the ladies that if they're on a battlefield with somebody shooting rockets they should definitely not all cluster together in a 10 meter radius for a dramatic pose.

I am perfectly satisified. The story is concluded and I don't need to watch the movie again.

Definitelly the movie was a nod to fans. Bringing back all past threads and movies, then parodying them - lovely . The final battle looked like someone took a box with all his childhood toys and strew them all over.

That was hella enjoyable, but I feel like I'm too old for this and now need to move on.

Yeah that was an oddball. How the hell Pepper Pots even got into battle now that they have a baby?

@Maurice:

Captain America's ending was touching but it's also a plot hole.

Also, now that Captain Marvel is in it, it will be hard to incorporate her into the movie during different times. Her character has pretty much the same problem as Superman in DC: unless you're dealing with an extremely powerful enemy, putting her on the screen ruins any suspense the audience might have had.

They can always use the excuse "Well, there's a lot of stuff going on around the galaxy/universe" but that's kind of vague and you still wonder why she never at any point decided to take a brief detour and fly though Thanos' ship and make it explode. In theory she should have been able to solo the entire army as long as Thanos didn't have the stones. Everybody else on the field was taking up space and using oxygen.

edit:

I watched it a second time by myself and I liked it a lot better when I wasn't sleep deprived.

I've always had some beef with time travel in shows/movies because of the amount of bullship involved in 'explaining' it, and because it makes the stakes feel a lot lower. Anybody else feel this way? Nonetheless, it was barrels of fun.

Highlights of the movie:

Ironman spending time with his daughter.
Captain America's solo battle with Thanos. I knew he wouldn't/couldn't win, but it was awesome to watch.
Thor threatening to kill Noobmaster over the headphones.
Hulk trying to make time travel work.
Watching Thanos cook soup. I could really go for some extraterrestrial veggie stew.

I look forward to phase 4 and the many new characters taking the helm.

More on the topic, it was a farewell movie. At first, I felt like it didn't keep the standard of the major MCU hits, but as I kept watching I realized it was a "so long and thanks for all the fish" movie. Once I accepted it for what it is, it felt right and well done.

I'm curious to see if they're ever gonna address the time travel thing again or just ignore that they can do it. Because, logically, when that genie is out of the lamp you can't really stuff it back in and it kinda ruins everything.

Cats taught the Egyptians how to build pyramids after they moved to Earth. This is a historical fact.

And yeah, I also enjoyed it much better the 2nd time when I accepted it as a "farewell" movie for many of the characters. I walked into the theater expecting Infinity War: Part 2.

I wasn't very thrilled during the first part of the film but it more than made up for it. So many good things about it. Some very touching scenes with long gone characters. Asgardians of the galaxy made me smile. Hammer-worthy cap was epic. Clint was badass. Loved the three on one battle with Thanos.

Would have been better with more hulk smash, instant kill mode and
doctor Strange shenanigans. He knew they were not needed but still. Also hoped to see more of Thanos' henchmen.

I am curious, did they screw up the timeline where Loki escaped? They return the stones back to Howard Stark's time but that does not erase the in between time line right?

Also cap must have made multiple stops. One to return Mjolnir and the ether and two more to return the other stones. I assume he left the tesseract last and he stayed there while his other self was frozen. But wouldn't he have affected the time line somehow?

What happened with alternate Gamora and Nebula? I don't remember the last guardians scene well, were they present on the ship?

How did the ancient one know all that? She wasn't jumping around with the time stone right?

What happened to Lady Sif, did she die off screen in a previous film?

Timeline shennigans are pretty messed up anyway, since Nebula killed her younger self when her younger self threatened Gamorra. If it were all one timeline, the older Nebula should have disappeared right at that very moment.

It's as they say, that time travel and changes to events don't change what has already happened; it differs from just about all other movies that deal with time travel (Back to the Future is mentioned explicitely). As such, it's unclear whether Loki's escape with the Space Stone means that he's actually alive at the end of Endgame - he'd somehow have had to bypass the event of his death in between, and I don't see how he could have done that with the Space Stone. But who knows.

The younger Gamorra came along with Thanos to the battle in which he was ultimately defeated. I also don't have a clear recollection of where she went at the end, but I think she rejoined the Guardians of the Galaxy. By the way, the "Asguardians of the Galaxy" is indeed a comic spin-off in that series, so I expect that Thor will take a major role in the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie, next to the original cast of that one.

Lady Sif was killed in Infinity War, but resurrected in Endgame.

Oh, didn't notice her anywhere. Afaik she's only appeared in agents of shield once, since.. Thor 1 or 2. It's like they ditched her.

According to the ancient one changes in the past only branch off to a different timeline instead of affecting the current one. Loki is gone from this timeline so perhaps his series will focus on the other one.

After some digging(and according to the Russos), it seems that the cap that appears at the end actually came from a different timeline. I guess he found someone else to send him back after he lived his life? A bit weird but it is like him to return and let them know what became of him. Only.. did they make him an extra shield or did he grab it from the alternate cap of his time? ^^

If something changes in the past, it creates an alternative reality timeline. So Nebula killing other Nebula doesn't make Nebula disappear. A person traveling to the past becomes their individual future.

It's not the first movie to use time travel that way, but I think it's the first super popular one to do so.

Either way, it's time travel, so it's a bunch of bull****ing.

It is very clearly stated at least twice that time travel does not revert past events. That's why Avengers couldn't undo what happened over last 5 years, but only retrieve another set of Infinity Stones and use it to do the opposite of what Thanos did at present moment.

What happened in timelines they traveled to is completely irrelevant, as these were alternate timelines going their own way. However, at the end of movie Cap travels again to return Stones from where they came from to fix the alternate timelines at least partially.

I'm not big on Marvel, but I enjoyed the movie. The choreography was great; battles looked awesome. Despite their high pacing I didn't have trouble following the action, and I had no trouble recognizing who's fighting who. With wanky camera action with many quick pans, it sometimes becomes confusing WTH is going on but here it was mostly pure gold.

That being said, the beginning was too long for my taste, it could be easily trimmed by 30 mins and it would be for the best. Too many corny jokes, too.

I'm not a fan of Captain Feminazism Marvel, so I'm sort of OK with the fact she was mostly not participating. Good riddance. Too overpowered to be useful in any meaningful plot.

A very solid movie, would recommend watching.

The MCU is extremely wonky when it comes to the powers of its character. Without Mjolnir, Captain America is probably less instrumental in the final battle than one of the nameless wizards.

Basically, people are important if the plot wants them to be important. That's why you have noobs like Hawkeye fighting beside the Hulk and still being useful.

My prediction: in the next "Avengers" movie years from now (which will probably be named something else) the bad guys will devise some plan to trap/neutralize Captain Marvel for most or all of the movie, and everybody else will have to team up.

People are speculating who the next big bad will be. I think instead of redoing another "Thanos" character as a central bad guy, it will be a team of 3 or 4 of them.

---

As far as "Captain Feminism", while I appreciate Marvel's efforts to be inclusive, there's a tang of irony that it was cast by a 5'7 blonde Caucasian woman. It would have been better if she was black, or better yet, Filipino. She's blonde in the comics, but they've already shown copious latitude with interpreting the source material.

The internet consensus is that Doctor Doom should be the next ubervillain.  Galactus' name gets bandied about a lot but I don't think he has enough personality to cut it.  Kang is supposedly racist so he's not likely to make it to the big screen either.

Also, supposedly Secret Wars have been confirmed as the next great arc by one of the creative talents (not an official Disney proclamation though).

Captain America did not randomly pick up the hammer though. There was an ambiguous scene in age of ultron and he's also done it in the comics.

Characters like hawkeye and black widow make better sense in films like the winter soldier where a trained agent needs a broader skillset than just fighting ability. Not that I mind them in avengers, rather, I dislike how in those movies there is always a fight against a horde of monsters in the end.

Captain feminism looked better with long hair. I have seen a comic version that had short hair but naah. She feels rather out of place in the mcu, she's so powerful that they'd have to conveniently write her off in most situations so as not make things too easy. Every other character has some vulnerability or downside, even the strongest of them. Actually what are her powers exactly? Not seen her film yet.
