Heroes4 shots inside Town
Heroe4 Townshots inside the towns
I do hope they will hire an artist to render the inside town shots. I am disappointed so far. I think their layout doesn't come close to the asthetics of the H3 towns in the shots I have seen so far. To me it looks like prototype stuff where an outline is laid down as to the location of the town structures yet the background topography is yet to be brought in. The structures look really cool to me, just the continuity of a town is barely even apparent.
A great example I think is to look at the rampart. Every time you add a structure it fits in nicely to a grand picture....same with all towns in H3. It seems in H4 so far if their are not town structures you will have nothing but a bunch of barren plateaus.
I was actually wondering if someone didn't just put down all the town structures on a backgound to show the structures only. It appears only the tourain type (ie: desert, snow, etc.) has changed and not actually even the landscape texture. I hope that is clear. What I mean is that the landscape stays the same and only the sky and ground change colors...like from snow to grass and then you have the different town structures.
Gosh I hope these are not the true in town screens.

Town Graphics
Yeh, I was disappointed too. There is no flow of background that puts the town together, just a bunch of structures on a terrain. Another thing helping in H3 is the houses that do nothing but show the "population" of the town when you add a town hall level. I hope those are just structure drafts.

Pretty sure they arent final screen pics..at this point I would think 3do is creating the parts so they can actually test the gameplay elements, then do cosmetics at end before release date. For example look at first battle shots, then newer snow battle shot. 2nd has a little more detail and such. I also wouldnt judge much now until it gets closer to the release date.
But in my personal oppinion, I liked the shots, and didnt think they were too bad.

Whining about the in town screens? They look JUST FINE. Guys are getting too picky. Well then, I got bad news for ya, those screenshots are pretty much final, any touchups are going to be on small details, but expect what you see now to be what is in November.

Too much symmetry
I like the overall design and the effor put on the towns (image quality, structures design), but I have analyzed my impressions and located what doesn't fit for me: TOO MUCH SYMMETRY. I don't know if this is done on purpose (some people find it difficult to learn where all the dwellings and structures are in different towns), but that changing disposition of each town was a very important feature for me.
In other words, in the previous HOMM games, you enter a town and feel a different sensation each time, and this sensation is not only produced by colors, or different structures. The unique disposition of all the elements inside the town is what produces a nice eye-shot: a true feeling of ambiental change when you jump across the nine town types in a row. The city hall is on the left bottom corner in the castle, but it hangs from a tree in the fortress. See what I mean?
Checking the available HOMM4 screenshots with a image visor like ACDSee, I have the impression of being in the SAME TOWN with different buildings. The Mage Guild is in the same position, the fort is in the same position, and all the dwellings, maybe ordered by level, are set in rows. If these shots are close to the final ones, towns will be a deception. I think there was a bigger effort in the graphic design of HOMM1, HOMM2 and HOMM3 towns.
And another question: What about those unique elements of each town (cage of warlords, necromancy amplifier, town gate...) This is a ray of hope for me. Maybe if they add this unique structures (still being designed) the towns will look more different. I still rely on the usually nice criterion of New World developers.
