All NWC HOMM are good,
H1 is great little game, with lot of potential
H2 is great improvement
H3 is best of the series
H4 is good, but lot of disappointment
The H5 is great in skill mechanic, but the art its not heroes spirit, the map exploration is boring
H6 & H7 i can't tell, i never play,

For me HOMM is combination of game play, mechanic, art, universe, story that give unique experience
since H5 i feel HOMM series lack of any HoMM experience
Maybe because, not developed by NWC or the new Dev/Pub failure to capture the spirit, the experience of HOMM

I played both 6 and 7 and in my opinion they are awful.

I fully agree with your post.

This opinion will probably be rather controversial but the only two things I really liked in Heroes 6 was the pop growth buildings, and the ability to convert towns and those pop growth buildings to your faction. I thought it was a neat little feature.

I enjoy a game of HOMM4 every now and then. However, the fact that they neutered Town Portal and eliminated Dimension Door renders XL maps pretty much unplayable for me.

@zombiewhacker

You could always play.. the other sizes?

@Oddball

Growth boosters have been a part of heroes long before that though. Town conversion looked cool but the way it was implemented killed an aspect of homm, that of mixing different troops. The whole game was made with that in mind of course.

You don't have to convert towns, though (in single player). However, in multiplayer the feature allows to include random towns and make sure you can use all troops on one hero.
Optional stuff can't be used against a game - it's optional, after all.

This is a tricky question, people would have to remove their nostalgia glasses first.

HoMM5 is superior in many aspects to HoMM3, to be honest.

well I'm doing a re-play from H1 all the way to H7. Since Homm3 has ungodly amounts of content, I'm still stuck there. But the end is at hand, it just takes a little bit of focus haha. I'll be making a grand topic about the HoMM3 adventure eventually - with Elvin as guest star since we played through everything together and compared our scores

Using the nostalgia card in this debate is something that one could use and get away in 2010, when tote was only few years old and when homm3 was over 10 years old game.

However, nowadays it's been 12 years since the release of the last expansion of homm5. Even kids who played it as their first Homm game are likely to be all adults at this point. If homm3 is the old gramps of RPG gaming, homm5 is a middle-aged man finding his hair slowly turning more grey each passing day.
  If a bunch of people are still playing a game that is over 20 years old on a monthly, weekly or even daily basis, I wouldn't describe it as nostalgia. I like playing tetris with my phone, but nobody that I know has never questioned my liking towards the game, and said that I should play Candy Crush instead.

Homm3 and homm5 are both great games, easily worth 5/5 status. If only homm5 used 2D map movement and 3D battles, it would be a much better game, as the 3D map doesn't really add anything to the game.

Not in the same capacity though. In the previous games you had dwellings, where you could buy troops from. In 6 they introduced the growth boosters, which just increased all town creature growth. And removed dwellings

So I mean kinda the same thing, but different.

That sounds awesome DF!

Btw. I know this isn't the first time you have done something like this, how many games have gone through/completed by now anyway?

I think H5 Tote > H3 Complete for multiplayer games.

I'm actually keeping an excel spreadsheet regarding all games I play. I have tiers (green for "just beat the game", blue for completion - usually meaning highest difficulty & all extra content cleared ie. sidequests, finally purple for mastering the game which may include things like completing all achievements on steam). It's pretty fun. I'm not going for "purple tier" for every game where it's possible, but the games I truly love are "meant to be purpled". HoMM 2, 3 and 5 will most likely all end up purple. HoMM 1, 6 and 7 will probably end up green (actually HoMM1 already did).

We'll see about HoMM 4

What makes a game the best, that's the real question. But it is clear that H3 is one of the most loved in the series. Whether or not that makes it the best is a matter of opinion, that is all.

HoMM 5-7 are out of question for me.
For this type of game, strategy with a map view, 2D designs with a fixed point of view is ideal.

The graphics style of Homm 5-7 looks busy, noisy, confusing, convoluted, unfocused and gets in my way. Most of the units look unbearably detailed and ugly.
