Reddit says it's a tossup whether updating the bios works...

If you really think you can screw up downloading a file, putting it onto an usb and renaming it, you can always pay the vendor to update it for you. They generally charge anywhere between $5-$15 for the service.

That's still quite a bit for very little if you ask me. Even if you were to snow up your bios flash somehow(maybe you downloaded the wrong file or something,) it won't brick the board. You can just redo the process with the right file. That's the beauty of a flash system not tied to the main bios.

Gonna have to try I guess. Anyway, list is final, next step is cleaning my room, then setting up the wifi, then ordering the parts, then flashing bios then assembling the pc then setting up windows&essentials, then Nirvana

The process itself is very simple as outlined in their instruction video and/or manual:
- Download new bios file from website
- Rename said file to MSI.ROM(this changes depending on manufacturer of the board, it's specified in their manual)
- Copy said file to an USB-stick
- Put USB stick into the USB-port that says FLASH(again, this changes depending on the manufacturer of the board, it's specified in the manual)
- Push the button and see that led starts to blink
- Go have some tea (of utmost importance, the rom is slow and modern UEFI files are large so it will take some time)

I do know this, and that it has to be a clean fat32 stick, just that reddit reported problems flashing this exact card. Which is very unnerving.

It doesn't have to be clean, just FAT32/FAT16(depending on manufacturer again) and the file has to be in the root(so not inside a folder.)

If you get a broken board you can just RMA it. Flashing the bios does not void warranty and if the feature doesn't work it's clearly a defective product so there's no issue there.

okay so this Reddit post has me pretty spooked! I'd like a backup motherboard recommendation if at all possible. Don't want to commit to anything while scared, but this puts the pro carbon ac in a different light.

You did say you were getting it for christmas, I assumed the new bios would be out by then.

That said, no one else has the external bios flash functionality on their older cheaper boards, so you're going to have to buy X570 or order a bios update from the vendor. They are expensive.

X570 with wifi: ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) $200ish
X570 without wifi: ASUS Prime X570-P $170ish
B450 with wifi(that requires vendor to update bios for you): GIGABYTE B450 AORUS PRO WIFI $120ish + whatever charged for bios update

Thank you! Xmas is the worst-case scenario, currently it looks like I'm going to be able to talk my parents into the smallest of advances to have it ready by the time term starts. The biggest obstacles right now are less monetary and more... physical. Need to set up the space it'd occupy along with the necessary wifi access

I'm waiting on parts to become available here this side of the globe myself. Everything AMD sold out the first day here. *sigh*

So in a way you are lucky, I have been researching this stuff for the past three-four months

So I discovered the magic of powerline adapters... thinking to get a set and switch to a msi b450 tomahawk max. I heard those boards can flash bios fine. Thoughts?

Max comes with out-of-box Ryzen 3000 support. if you can, definitively go for it. Regular Tomahawks are a bit of a lottery. Most work, but some people have problems even now after a couple BIOS updates.

My friend had a powerline adapter and it was a bit of lottery. Sometimes it worked great and sometimes it just slowed to a crawl. Now granted that was seven years ago so you'd think the new ones are more reliable. They're pretty cheap too so worth a try. If they don't work for you can always get a Wifi-adapter later.

Supposedly the technology has come pretty far since then. The folks at buildapc even said it's a better alternative to a wireless connection provided there aren't issues with the local power network.

I use a powerline and at the best moments it reaches 90 Mbit/s, which, considering my provider's speed of 100Mbit/s it's great for me.
Sometimes it can crawl down to slower speeds, but it's still decent for most uses, rarely have I had download speeds slower than 3 Mbit/s, and as you can imagine, downloading things from the right servers is a breeze.

Typically I'm all for anything which could be a substitute to the wireless connection, for many reasons, however this one could be just an extra expenditure if your home's wiring isn't exactly new. Some speed will be delivered almost certainly but what exactly is hard to tell before you actually test it. If you don't care all that much about how fast the alternative connection point will be able to download/upload - it's probably worth it. Otherwise stick to the regular wireless, almost all of them are n-standard nowadays which does not suffer from interference as much as the older standards and can be fine-tuned more precisely to deliver good speed if your immediate neighbourhood is overcrowded with other wireless users with similar devices.

Thing is, my home is singularly unsuited for any kind of wifi. Long distances, crazy thick walls... We have a really high-end router, and it barely manages half the house. I don't know in what exact state the wiring is, but it can't be that old, I'd wager it's less than 30 years old? EDIT: It's 16 years old.
We are also thinking about repeaters, but there's no place to really put them, and Dad is kinda reluctant to try anything (It's an ongoing struggle to get net access for my room, and at this point, the debate is more than 15 years old with zero improvement)

Ideally, I'd be able to download stuff of considerable size, browse the internet and play Elvin.

Erm... how long are the long distances? You can run a standard Cat5 cable up to hundred meters before you start noticing considerable performance degradation and you don't really need more than a 100 Mbps one since you probably don't get more than that from the ISP anyway. It can go along the skirting board or the wall or whatever, you only need connectors (RJ45) on both ends to connect it to the router and your desktop/laptop and any decently equipped IT hardware store should already have such cables of different lengths already "assembled" and ready for use. It will come cheaper too.

Technically we could, sure, but it would be a dangerous tripping hazard. Anyway, working on Dad, seems like he's finally beginning to crumble. Learned about access points, might do that. Interestingly, our old router is nowhere to be found...
